About this opportunity

NASA Johnson Space Center, through the Institute of Competition Sciences, is seeking a host facility for the NASA Deep Space Autonomous Robotics Challenge with a Capability Package due by January 31, 2027. This is a Request for Information structured as a non-reimbursable partnership (Space Act Agreement) with no federal funding for facility costs; selected competitors will compete for up to $5 million in total prizes during a three to six-month evaluation period scheduled for late Spring and early Summer 2028.

The facility must meet four baseline criteria: an indoor, climate-controlled space in the United States with a minimum continuous surface area of 50 feet by 50 feet; a flat or substantially flat surface suitable for mobile robotics and multi-agent ground operations; access to standard electrical utilities and reliable Wi-Fi connectivity; and established facility access controls and security protocols.

Interested entities must submit a single-PDF Capability Package not exceeding three pages via SAM.gov, including a facility overview, high-resolution site photographs of the proposed footprint, a layout schematic, security protocol details, and target availability windows between February and August 2028.

The challenge advances NASA's goals in managing multi-agent robotic systems tasked with preparing lunar and Martian surface infrastructure before astronaut crews arrive. This RFI does not constitute a formal solicitation and does not obligate the government to issue a subsequent solicitation or execute an agreement.
