About this opportunity

The United States Geological Survey (USGS), a civilian agency within the Department of the Interior, has issued a Special Notice of Intent to award a purchase order to Geotek Limited for a microXRF geochemistry sensor designed to integrate with the existing Geotek MSCL-XZ (Mark II) core logging system. This is a single-source procurement action, meaning the USGS has determined that Geotek is the only known source capable of providing equipment meeting the required technical specifications. The procurement will be conducted under the Revolutionary FAR Overhaul (RFO) Federal Acquisition Regulation Part 12 for the acquisition of commercial products and services. The NAICS code for this action is 334516, Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing. This notice satisfies the requirements of RFO FAR Subpart 5.101(a) regarding sole-source procurements.

The USGS Geology, Minerals, Energy, & Geophysics Science Center seeks the microXRF sensor to enable high-resolution, non-destructive elemental analysis of sediment and rock cores at sub-millimeter scales, supporting critical research projects including the Pacific Abrupt Climate Event (PACE) Project and climate variability studies for western U.S. ecosystem adaptation. All responsible parties may submit quotations electronically to yangzhi_deng@ios.doi.gov by May 13, 2026 at 1700 PST, and no other submission method will be accepted. The procurement is under the simplified acquisition threshold, and market research conducted through a Sources Sought Notice yielded no competing sources, confirming Geotek's unique capability to integrate micro-XRF sensors with hyperspectral imaging on core logging systems. The sole source justification has been redacted in accordance with FAR 6.301, and the Government retains sole discretion to determine whether to compete the action based on responses received.
