About this opportunity

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative proposals for the Material Synthesis Technologies for Universal and Diverse Integration Opportunities (M-STUDIO) program. DARPA seeks proposals to develop nano-scale heterogeneous material synthesis on lattice mismatch substrates, to realize defect-free multi-layer heterogeneous junctions with atomically sharp surface/interface and atomically abrupt compositional transition. Proposed research should investigate innovative approaches that enable revolutionary advances in science, devices, or systems, rather than evolutionary improvements. Proposals are due by May 6, 2024 and must address both Phase 1 and Phase 2 objectives. Phase 1 involves demonstrating defect-free single sub-10nm compound semiconductor layers within 18 months, while Phase 2 focuses on realizing multiple sub-10nm heterogeneous layers with atomic precision over another 18 months.

The solicitation is not set-aside for any specific business size or type. The number and value of awards is not specified, and DARPA will make awards through contracts, cooperative agreements or other transaction agreements. The program is open to any eligible entity, including international organizations able to comply with export control regulations. Successful proposals will demonstrate innovative approaches that enable revolutionary advances in the targeted technical areas.

Notice text

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative proposals in the following technical areas: development of a nano-scale heterogeneous material synthesis on lattice mismatch substrates to realize defect-free multi-layer heterogenous junctions with atomically sharp surface/interface and atomically abrupt compositional transition. Proposed research should investigate innovative approaches that enable revolutionary advances in science, devices, or systems. Specifically excluded is research that primarily results in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice.
