Update #3 · Latest ·
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is an integral part of the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) and its mission is to save lives, prevent injuries, and reduce traffic-related health care and other economic costs associated with motor vehicle crashes. To accomplish this, NHTSA collects and analyzes motor vehicle crash data and develops, promotes, and implements educational programs, vehicle safety standards, research, and enforcement programs.
Data suggest that sobriety checkpoints in combination with publicity can be effective in reducing crashes. However, sobriety checkpoint programs have not achieved a significant general deterrence effect when examined in terms of program awareness, self-reported behavior change, and perception of increased likelihood of being stopped by the police and arrested. There is a need to improve general deterrence so that enforcement programs can be more effective and the crash reduction effects sustained. There is a need to improve the visibility of enforcement programs.

The objective of this requirement is to assess the effectiveness of an earlier checkpoint start time and accompanying signage in raising public awareness of sobriety checkpoint activity and raising the publics perceived risk of an alcohol-impaired driver being stopped and arrested.
