About this opportunity
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Biological Technologies Office (BTO) has published a Special Notice announcing a Proposers Workshop for the Generative Optogenetics (GO) program scheduled for Wednesday, January 7, 2026, in the Greater DC area. This workshop is designed to support an anticipated Program Solicitation and will bring together potential performers to discuss the GO initiative. The workshop will provide opportunities for registrants to submit teaming profiles and deliver lightning talks, though lightning talk slots are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Advance registration is required for attendance, and all times referenced are in Eastern Time. The Special Notice was posted on December 9, 2025, with a registration deadline of December 29, 2025.
The GO program aims to develop a molecular machine capable of translating genetic information transmitted via optical signals into DNA or RNA sequences within living cells, with performers expected to create a Nucleic Acid Compiler (NAC) that synthesizes 3-6 kilobase nucleic acid sequences using only light as an information transfer mechanism. The program will span 42 months across two phases, with Phase 1 (12 months) focused on refining molecular components and Phase 2 (30 months) concentrated on integration and in vivo demonstration. DARPA is actively encouraging participation from diverse performer types, including non-traditional contractors, small businesses, academic institutions, and first-time government contractors. Interested parties must register by December 29, 2025, with abstract submissions anticipated for January 16, 2026, and Phase 1 awards to follow oral presentations. Teaming profiles and lightning talks should highlight technical expertise, institutional assets, team composition, and relevant experience across the program's technical areas.
