About this opportunity
Paragraph 1:
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center intends to modify an existing purchase order with ONDA CORPORATION to provide a fiber optic hydrophone system to perform calibrations of existing ultrasound-imaging-guided focused ultrasound systems. The system must meet several technical requirements, including the ability to provide both acoustic pressure and temperature measurements simultaneously, withstand acoustic pressures up to 500 MPa, and have a visible light source, bandwidth limiting filters, and a touchscreen user interface. The acquisition is being conducted under the authority of the FAR Subpart 13.106-1(b)(i), allowing the Contracting Officer to solicit from one source, as ONDA CORPORATION is the only known source for this specialized equipment.
Paragraph 2:
This opportunity is set aside for small businesses. ONDA CORPORATION is the current incumbent contractor. No details on the potential award value or budget range are provided. The delivery timeline for the fiber optic hydrophone system is 8 weeks after receipt of order. The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code for this acquisition is 334510 - Electromedical and Electrotherapeutic Apparatus Manufacturing, with a size standard of 1,250 employees.

Background
The Frank Lab (FL) operates in the Clinical Center (CC) operating under the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences National Institutes of Health Bethesda, Md. The Frank Laboratory’s present major translation research interest is investigating the biological interactions of ultrasound energy with cells and tissues. A major ultrasound technique that is emerging for clinical is focused ultrasound (FUS). Spatial focusing of ultrasonic energy permits deposition of sufficient ultrasound intensity for numerous biomedical uses (oncology, neurology, regenerative medicine, etc.). The lab utilizes ablative and non-ablative ultrasound for a myriad of investigations into the biological effects of ultrasonic therapies with normal and pathological cells and tissues. The lab has previously discovered novel biological pathways and mechanisms by which ultrasound exerts effects on tissues. The lab’s discoveries have both illuminated novel uses and provided meaningful refinements to existing implementations of therapeutic ultrasound. The lab continues to be at the forefront of cellular and molecular discovery to translate ultrasound therapies for effective clinical use.
This acquisition is being conducted under the authority of the FAR Subpart 13.106-1(b)(i) allowing the Contracting Officer (CO) to solicit from one source. ONDA CORPORATION is the only known source. This fiber optic hydrophone system with optical probes is unique because it allows calibration of high intensity focused ultrasound systems without being susceptible to damage. It is also a turn-key hydrophone system and no addition components will be needed to use the system.
The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code for this acquisition is 334510 with a size standard of 1250 employees.
