Analytical scope includes soil testing (nitrate, phosphorous, potassium, organic matter, trace elements, pH, salinity, cation exchange capacity, texture, total nitrogen, carbon, particle size, and mineralizable nitrogen) and plant nutrient analysis (nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, sodium, and trace elements, plus total nitrogen and carbon). Results must be delivered within three months of sample receipt. Statistical outliers identified by USGS scientists must be re-analyzed at no additional cost.

The laboratory facility must meet USGS quality assurance standards. The lab director must hold an advanced degree in soil chemistry and plant nutrition with specific experience analyzing desert soils.
