About this opportunity
The Department of the Air Force Materiel Command Air Force Sustainment Center is seeking cadmium plating services for USAF Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) system motor generators located at Launch Facilities (LF) and Launch Control Centers (LCC). The services procured will involve brush cadmium plating on mating metal surfaces of motor generators as part of depot-level repair and overhaul operations, with the critical dual functions of providing corrosion protection and meeting nuclear hardness bonding and grounding requirements specific to the Minuteman weapon system. Contractors must strictly adhere to the specified brush cadmium plating process using designated equipment and chemicals without utilizing alternative cadmium plating processes or substitute plating materials, as determined by the MMIII System Program Office. The government will evaluate responses based on contractor capability to perform the specified plating processes, compliance with technical requirements detailed in the Statement of Work and drawing part numbers, and small business status within the plating services industry (NAICS 332813). The Sources Sought responses are due by February 12, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. MST, and the formal solicitation is expected to be issued following this market research phase.
This procurement is designated as a Total Small Business Set-Aside, actively seeking participation from small business concerns including 8(a) businesses, Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned, HUBZone, and Women-Owned small business concerns. The Air Force currently requires overhaul of at least 11 LF motor generators and 4 LCC motor generators per year, establishing a baseline for anticipated contract volume and ongoing service requirements. No current incumbent contractor or award value is specified in the pre-solicitation documentation; however, the annual requirement reflects a sustained demand for cadmium plating services supporting critical ICBM system maintenance and nuclear weapons reliability. Contractors must be registered in the System for Award Management (SAM) and prepared to submit Quality Assessment Reports, Certificates of Quality Audit Compliance, and Work Completion Certifications as required data deliverables. Responses should include company name, CAGE code, point of contact information, small business status determination, and evidence of capability to perform the specialized brush cadmium plating process on the specified component part numbers including control cabinets, bed plates, AC & DC motor frames, and motor frame assemblies.
Notice text
The USAF Minuteman III Launch Facility (LF) and Launch Control Center (LCC) motor generators require a specific
process for cadmium plating on mating metal surfaces for corrosion protection and low bonding resistance. This process
includes specific equipment, chemicals, and methods for brush cadmium plating. Currently the USAF has requirements to
overhaul at least 11 LF motor generators and 4 LCC motor generators per year. Cadmium plating is not only for corrosion
control but because of its high electrical conductivity properties it is used to meet nuclear hardness bonding and grounding
requirements in the Minuteman (MM) Weapon System motor generator. Cadmium plating repair is part of the depot repair/
overhaul process for ICBM motor generators.
Alternative cadmium plating processes or alternative plating materials cannot be used to repair motor generators at this
time per MMIII SPO OSS&E Authority Mr. Allen Hancey.
