About this opportunity

The Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Integrated Service Network 8, is conducting market research to identify qualified sources for a retained surgical item detection system across twelve VISN 8 medical centers, with responses due by September 11, 2026.

This is a sources-sought RFI only, not a formal solicitation. VISN 8 currently relies on manual sponge counts by surgical staff and seeks an integrated radiofrequency-tagged laparotomy sponge detection system to function as an adjunct to existing manual counting procedures. The requirement addresses patient safety by providing an independent, automated method to detect retained surgical items and reduce the risk of adverse events from retained sponges.

The Government specifies equipment manufactured by Medtronic or equal alternatives: Situate Console, Body Scanner Lite, Room Scanner, and Complete Care Service Plan. All components must be made in the U.S.A. The system must include automated, non-handheld RF scanning capability beneath the patient to detect RF-tagged surgical sponges during operative procedures, plus a handheld environmental scanner. Award will be on a firm fixed price basis.

Responses to this RFI will inform the Government's selection of the appropriate acquisition method. No set-aside is contemplated. NAICS 339112 (Surgical and Medical Instrument Manufacturing); PSC 6515 (Medical and Surgical Instruments, Equipment, and Supplies).
