The YIP grant awards are made to U.S. institutions of higher education, industrial laboratories, for-profit, or non-profit research organizations where the Principal Investigator (PI) is employed full-time and holds a regular position. The PI must be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident. Researchers at Federally Funded Research and Development Centers or DoD Laboratories are not eligible.

Individual YIP awards are funded up to $150,000 per year for three years, for a total of $450,000, with no single year exceeding $150,000. An anticipated 37 traditionally funded YIPs and 2 YIPs funded in partnership with the Laboratory for Physical Sciences may be awarded, with potential for an additional 37 YIPs from other AFOSR research funding. Q2. Can I submit a proposal to more than one research portfolio area?

Answer: No. YIP proposals may be submitted for only one research portfolio area.

Q3. I am planning to coordinate my topic idea with one of the Program Officers, which is recommended in the FOA. Can the coordination happen any time before the white paper deadline?

Answer: Yes, you may reach out to one of the Program Officers any time before the white paper deadline.

Q4. May I submit multiple white papers to different branches?

Answer: Yes, you may submit multiple white papers, but you need to inform the Program Officer(s) that you are sending a white paper to another branch.

Q5. May I have a funded collaborator from a different Institution?

Answer: No. Individual awards are made to the Institution, not to the Principal Investigator.

There may not be co-PI’s except if the potential proposed PI transfers Institutions post-closing date of the announcement and the primary Institution agrees to add the PI’s receiving Institution as a sub-award. The YIP is a single investigator award, there are no collaborators.

Q6. On the YIP FOA, it reads that the white paper includes “potential team members.” But it also reads no co-PI allowed. What does this mean?

Answer: Potential team members include a Post Doctoral Associate, Graduate Student, and/or Undergraduate Student. Individual awards are made to the Institution, not to the Principal Investigator. There may not be co-PI’s except if the potential proposed PI transfers Institutions post-closing date of the announcement and the primary Institution agrees to
