About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for an In-Line X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Measurement System for Argonne National Laboratory. The system is designed to be mounted on a roll-to-roll coating line for continuous chemical analysis and quality control, with specific technical requirements including a 10 W X-Ray generator, Silicon Drift Detector, measurement speed of 10 ms, and element detection range from aluminum to uranium. Key specifications include software for automatic corrections and data interfaces, safety compliance features like X-ray shielding and emergency stop controls, and comprehensive installation and commissioning services.

The related federal contract opportunity is a Request for Quotation (RFQ) issued by UChicago Argonne LLC under a Department of Energy contract, with a submission deadline of January 6, 2026 at 3:00pm CST. Quotes should be sent to Molly Hunter at mollyhunter@anl.gov, referencing solicitation number 6-S176-Q-00092-00. The laboratory will be closed from December 24, 2025 through January 4, 2026, during which time no questions will be answered. Acceptance criteria include successful installation, training, and passing electrical and radiation leakage inspections, with the vendor responsible for any necessary remediation.

In-line XRF Measurement System Statement of Work

December 19, 2025 Introduction and Scope:

The high-speed, in-line X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) equipment will be mounted to a roll-to-roll coating line for in-line chemical analysis and quality control. This system allows for automatic and continuous inspection of manufactured films and membranes to monitor composition variation and/or chemical contamination.

Basic requirements for this in-line system include:

1. In-Line Monitoring XRF Module:

· X-Ray generator with 10 W power or above for strong X-ray signal

· X-Ray tube lifetime needs to be >5,000 hours to avoid frequent change and tool downtime.

· Silicon Drift Detector (SDD)

· Measurement speed: ≥10 ms

· A broad target element range between Al and U

· Irradiation area ≥100 mm

· Working Distance ≥100mm

2. Tool comes with software to enable:

· Automatic energy and intensity corrections

· Distance correction to reduce distance influence

· User interface with results viewer and system status

· Orchestrator

· Recipe configuration and adjustment

· The software

3. External data communication

· Tool comes with communication protocols and data interface to allow near real-time data collection

· The equipment supplier will provide users with access to the data interface

· The equipment comes with connection options to enable digital control of the devices by user’s artificial intelligence modules to achieve autonomous manufacturing

4. Safety compliance

· The equipment needs to have an x-ray shielding enclosure, which can be mounted to customer’s roll-to-roll coating machine.

· The enclosure door has interlock

· The equipment has emergency E-stop button and safety shut-down control circuit

· The equipment comes with X-ray emission certification

5. Installation and commissioning

· On-site installation and training

· Demonstrate machine operation within acceptable detection time and accuracy

· Document with written report Specifications:

· Must have all the parts, accessories, and functions as described in this SOW and quote specification.

· The module and all components must demonstrate their claimed functions.

Deliverables/schedule:

· Contractor will deliver Measurement System including all items as specified in this SOW Acceptance Criteria:

· Items delivered to ANL free of damage and include all items as specified in this SOW and price quote specifications.

· The vendor engineer installs and commissions the system and provides training to Argonne employees.

· Provide written commissioning report including data demonstrating satisfactory operation.

· Verify X-ray certification and other documentation is present and matches the item purchased

· If the equipment does not pass Argonne's electrical inspection, the supplier will be responsible for remediation to ensure the tool passes the inspection.

· If the equipment does not pass Argonne's radiation leakage inspection, the supplier will be responsible for remediation to ensure the tool passes the inspection.
