About this file
This is a work list document for the PKAA Nine Mile Phase 2 Project in Colorado, detailing mine opening closure specifications and requirements across multiple shaft sites. The project encompasses the closure of ten mine shafts (NM-01, NM-02, NM-05, NM-06, NM-12, NM-14, NM-15, NM-16, NM-17, NM-18, and NM-19) utilizing two primary closure methods: steel grated shaft closures and polyurethane foam (PUF) closures. The work specifications include installing grates ranging from 6' by 8' to 10' by 10' with concrete footers, deploying PUF in quantities ranging from 3 to 8 cubic yards, and removing collapsing wooden covers where applicable. Several shafts require steel beams to reduce span, with specific instances requiring two 4Wx13 steel beams. Two historically eligible sites (NM-12 and NM-16) require cultural resource monitoring during construction. The project involves bat exclusion requirements across all sites to protect roosting habitat.
All shafts are located in the Gunnison area of Colorado on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land or private property, with detailed UTM coordinates and access routes provided for each feature. Shaft dimensions vary significantly, with depths ranging from 15 to 80 feet, lengths from 4 to 24 feet, and widths from 3 to 24 feet. Most shafts feature timber or rock lining with no drainage systems, and all require bat-exclusion grating installations. The work specifications reference Section 8 (Steel Grated Shaft Closure) and Section 9 (Polyurethane Foam Closure) standards within the Scope of Work Standards document, establishing the technical requirements for all closure methods and materials.
