About this file

This is a Fire Prevention Order issued by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Gunnison Field Office in Colorado, effective July 2, 2026, through December 31, 2026, or until rescinded. The order implements Stage 2 Fire Restrictions across BLM-administered public lands in Gunnison, Hinsdale, Montrose, Ouray, Saguache, and San Juan counties in response to dry conditions and high fire danger. The restrictions prohibit building, maintaining, attending, or using fires, campfires, charcoal barbecues, and grills on federal lands; smoking outside of enclosed vehicles, buildings, or developed recreation sites; operating chainsaws without approved spark arresters, fire extinguishers, and shovels; and using welders, torches with open flames, or exploding targets. These Stage 2 restrictions supplement year-round wildfire prevention requirements that prohibit leaving fires unattended, possessing or discharging fireworks, using incendiary or tracer ammunition, burning hazardous materials, and operating off-road vehicles without properly installed spark arresters.

The order provides limited exemptions for persons holding permits or letters of authorization authorizing prohibited acts, those using fires fueled solely by liquid petroleum or LPG fuels, and federal, state, or local officers performing official duties. Violations are subject to fines up to $100,000, imprisonment up to 12 months, or both, with restitution for suppression and damage costs borne by the violator. The order was executed by Field Office Manager Jon Kaminsky on July 1, 2026, and is enforceable under the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 and applicable Code of Federal Regulations provisions.
