SECTION 222316 – SANITARY WASTE

AND VENT PIPING

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 WORK INCLUDES

A. Base Bid:

1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Regulatory Requirements: The specified requirements, in effect at date of bidding documents, are hereby incorporated by reference to the same effect as if they were included herein in full.

The requirements, or cited portions thereof, govern all piping work:

1. Illinois State Plumbing Code, 2004.

2. Underwriters Laboratory (UL):

a. UL 109: Tube fittings for flammable and combustible fluids, refrigeration service and marina use.

B. Compliance with standards and requirements of the regulatory bodies called out in the system and equipment sections herein shall be met. Materials supplied shall be the product of established manufacturers regularly engaged in the fabrication of such equipment.

A. Specified Standards in effect at date of bidding documents are hereby incorporated by reference to the same extent as if they were included herein in full. The standards, or cited portions thereof, govern all work where conflicts with this document occur.

1.5 SUBMITTAL

A. Submit in Accord with Section 013300.

B. Product Data:

1. Manufacturer’s product data on piping and accessories and installation instructions.

1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Provide factory-applied plastic end-caps on each length of piping; maintain end-caps through shipping, storage and handling as required to prevent pipe-end damage and eliminate dirt moisture from inside pipe and tube.

B. Where possible, store pipe and tube inside and protected from weather.

C. When necessary to store outside, elevate well above grade and enclose with durable, waterproof wrapping.

D. Protect flanges and fittings from moisture and dirt by inside storage and enclosure, or by packaging with durable, waterproof wrapping.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 SANITARY DRAIN, WASTE, AND VENT PIPING, BURIED WITHIN FIVE (5) FEET OF

BUILDING - CHOOSE ANY ONE (1) OF THE FOLLOWING:

A. Cast Iron Pipe: ASTM A74 and CISPI HS, service weight:

1. Fittings: Cast iron.

2. Joints: Hub-and-spigot, CISPI HSN and ASTM C564 compression type with neoprene gaskets.

B. Cast Iron Pipe: CISPI 301 or ASTM A888, hubless, service weight:

2. Joints: ASTM C564 and CISPI 310 neoprene gaskets and stainless steel clamp-and-shield assemblies.

C. PVC Pipe: ASTM D2665, Schedule 40 DWV:

1. Fittings: ASTM D3311, PVC.

2. Joints: Hub-and-spigot, ASTM D2855, solvent weld with ASTM D2564 solvent cement.

2.2 SANITARY DRAIN, WASTE, AND VENT PIPING, ABOVE GRADE - CHOOSE ANY

ONE (1) OF THE FOLLOWING

A. Cast Iron Pipe: ASTM A74 and CISPI HS, service weight:

2. Joints: Hub-and-Spigot, CISPI HSN and ASTM C564 compression type with neoprene gaskets.

B. Cast Iron Pipe: CISPI 301 or ASTM A888, hubless, service weight:

2. Joints: ASTM C564 and CISPI 310 neoprene gaskets and stainless steel clamp-and-shield assemblies.

C. PVC Pipe: ASTM D2665, Schedule 40 DWV:

1. Fittings: ASTM D3311, PVC.

2. Joints: Hub-and-spigot, ASTM D2855, solvent weld with ASTM D2564 solvent cement.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 PREPARATION

A. Ream pipe and tube ends. Remove burrs.

B. Clean off scale and dirt, inside and outside, before assembly.

C. Remove welding slag or other foreign material from piping.

D. During construction, until system is fully operational, keep all openings in piping and equipment closed except when actual work is being performed on that item or system:

1. Closures: Plugs, caps, blind flanges or other similar items specifically designed and intended for this purpose.

3.2 INSTALLATION

A. Do not install PVC piping exposed within 10 ft (3.1 m) of building finished floor.

B. Run pipe lines straight and true, parallel to building lines with minimum use of offsets and couplings.

C. Provide only such offsets as may be required to provide necessary headroom or clearance and to provide necessary flexibility in pipe lines.

D. Changes:

1. Changes in direction of pipe lines made only with fittings or pipe bends.

2. Changes in size made only with fittings.

3. Do not use miter fittings, face or flush bushings, or street elbows.

4. All fittings of long radius type, unless otherwise indicated.

E. Use full and double lengths of pipe wherever possible:

1. Cut pipe to exact measurement and install without springing or forcing except in case of expansion loops where cold springing is indicated.

2. Take particular care to avoid creating, even temporarily, undue loads, forces or strains on valves, equipment or building elements with piping connections or piping supports.

F. Provide non-conducting dielectric connections wherever jointing dissimilar metals.

G. Route piping in orderly manner and maintain gradient. Route parallel and perpendicular to walls.

H. Install piping to maintain headroom and neither interfere with use of space nor take more space than necessary.

I. Group piping whenever practical at common elevations.

J. Install piping to allow for expansion and contraction without stressing pipe or equipment connected.

K. Install same type piping material specified for inside building to 5 ft (1.5 m) outside of building.

L. Establish elevations of buried piping outside the building to ensure not less than 3 ft (0.9 m) of cover.

M. Where pipe support members are welded to structural building framing, scrape, brush clean, and apply one (1) coat of zinc rich primer to welding.

N. Provide support for utility meters in accordance with requirements of utility companies.

O. Prepare exposed, unfinished storm drainage piping, fittings, supports, and accessories ready for finish painting. Refer to Section 099123.

P. Pipe Drainage Provision:

1. Slope all water piping 1/8 in. (3.2 mm) per foot and arrange to drain at low points.

Q. Install bell and spigot pipe such that spigot ends point in direction of flow, unless otherwise indicated.

R. Interior Sanitary Soil Waste, Vent, Storm:

1. Connect underground sewers to site utilities at point 5 ft (1.5 m) outside building walls.

2. Pitch sewers and branches as follows:

a. Pipe, 3 in. (76.2 mm) and smaller: minimum 1/4 in. (6.4 mm) per foot.

b. Pipe, larger than 3 in. (76.2 mm): minimum 1/8 in. (3.2 mm) per foot or no less than 1 percent.

3. Continuously bed underground or on-ground piping on minimum 3 in. (76.2 mm) compacted sand or gravel with depressions for hubs.

4. Compact backfilling for 6 in. (152.4 mm), sides and tops; and 3 in. (76.2 mm) under pipe to 95 percent proctor.

3.3 JOINTS

A. Threaded:

1. Screw threads: ANSI B2.1.

2. Ream pipe ends and remove all burrs and chips formed in cutting and threading.

3. Protect plated pipe and brass valve bodies from wrench marks when making up joints.

4. Apply thread lubricant to male threads only:

a. Lubricant: suitable for steam and condensation.

b. Vent lines: Lead-free joint compound.

c. All other services: Teflon tape.

B. Flanged:

1. Steel pipe flanges: ANSI B16.5.

2. Cast-iron pipe flanges: ANSI B16.1.

3. Steel flanges, raised-face, except when bolted to flat- face cast-iron flange.

4. Bolting:

a. Bolting for services up to 500oF (260oC): ASTM A 307, Grade B with square head bolts and heavy hexagonal nuts conforming to ANSI B18.2.1 and B18.2.2.

b. Set flange bolts tightness with indicating torque wrench to ensure equal tension in all bolts.

c. Tighten bolts such that those 180 degrees apart or directly opposite are torqued in sequence.

C. Push-On Joints:

1. Install in accordance with ANSI A21.11.

2. Single gasket type:

a. Bell: cast or machined gasket socket recesses, tapered annular opening and flared socket designed and installed to permit deflections to maximum 5 degrees.

b. Plain spigot ends suitably beveled to permit easy entry into bell, centering in gasket and compressing gasket.

c. Install joint liquid-tight under all pressure ranges from vacuum up to 350 psig (2413.2 kPa).

d. Use sufficient non-toxic, no-taste, no-odor lubricant to provide thin coat at each spigot end.

3. One (1) piece double-seal compression type:

a. Permit joint to flex maximum 5 degrees without loss of seal.

b. Install in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.

D. Hubless Cast-Iron Joints: Comply with CISPI Standard HSN-75.

E. Plastic Pipe/Tube Joints: Comply with manufacturer's instructions and recommendation, and with applicable industry standards for installation of pipe and fittings. Butt or socket welding/fusion shall be used to join pipe and fittings. Personnel qualifications and testing procedures for welding gas tubing shall be in accordance with the Department of Transportation (DOT) Part 192, Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations:

1. Making solvent-cemented joints: ASTM F402.

F. Insulating Dielectric Connections:

1. Comply with manufacturer's recommendations:

a. Pipe joints connecting dissimilar metals.

b. Pipe joints connecting similar metals where required for cathodically protecting pipe lines from adjoining pipe sections.

2. Joints rated to withstand temperature, pressure, and other characteristics of services for which used including testing pressure.

3. Make screwed joints with insulating unions.

4. Make flanged joints with insulating jackets, bolt sleeves and washers.

5. Bronze valve between dissimilar metals without insulating dielectric connections not considered as dielectric connection.

3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Before final acceptance of piping, test all systems scheduled and prove to be free of leaks.

1. Perform tests under observation of Engineer.

2. Remove, replace or satisfactorily repair defective work revealed by tests.

3. Make piping repairs with new materials; caulking of screwed joints or pin holes not permitted.

4. Contractor furnishes test equipment and materials required for tests.

5. Contractor furnishes water for testing and flushing.

6. Underground systems tested before backfilling.

7. Provide test certificates to using agency after testing is complete.

B. Testing Medium:

1. Hydrostatic Testing Medium: Clean pure water.

2. Pneumatic Testing Medium: Clean compressed air.

C. Pressure Testing Gauges:

1. ANSI B40.1, Grade AA; minimum 6 in. (152.4 mm) diameter dial with scale divisions equal or less than maximum allowable pressure drop.

D. Waste and Vent System Piping:

1. Test with water and air before fixtures are set.

2. After plumbing fixtures have been set and traps filled with water, Subject entire waste and vent systems to final test with smoke or peppermint.

3. Water Test:

a. Apply to drainage and vent system in sections or entirety.

b. If entire system is tested, tightly close all openings in pipes except highest opening, and fill system with water to overflow point.

c. If system is tested in sections, tightly plug each opening except highest opening, fill each section with water, and test each section with minimum 10 ft (3.1 m) head of water; test each preceding section until entire system has been tested with minimum 10 ft (3.1 m) head of water, except uppermost 10 ft (3.1 m) of system.

d. Keep water in system, or in portion under test, for minimum fifteen (15) minutes before inspection.

e. System must be tight at all joints.

4. Air Test:

a. If tests are made with air, apply minimum 5 psi (34.5 kPa) with force pump, and maintain minimum one (1) hour with no leakage apparent.

b. Use mercury-column gauge in making test.

3.5 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING

A. Cleaning:

1. Thoroughly clean all parts of installation at completion of work.

2. Remove grease, metal cuttings and sludge from equipment, pipes, valves and fittings.

3. Repair any stoppage, discoloration or other damage to finish, furnishings or parts of building due to Contractor's failure to properly clean piping system.

B. Adjusting:

1. Adjust flush valves and other parts of work for quiet operation.

2. Adjust control devices for proper operation.

3. Demonstrate to A/E satisfactory operation following adjustment.

4. Readjust or replace all items not functioning properly.
