2-8 NIGHT VISION DEVICE TESTING
The NVD test results are likely to vary from operator to op-erator. Operators should have experience with the Test Set.
NOTE
The Test Set is used only to check resolution performance of the center portion of each image intensifier. Normal viewing during operation continues to be the procedure to evaluate each tube for cosmetic defects. Since the Test Set does not illuminate the entire field of view, outer circumfer-ence defects such as shading must be detected during nor-mal viewing. NVD’S failing the test should be turned into higher maintenance.
For correct operation of the Test Set you must select the cor-rect adapter and Switch II/III setting. Table 2-2 below pro-vides a quick reference for selecting the correct adapter and Switch II/III setting.

2-8.1 Testing Night Vision Goggles
Use the following procedures to test Night Vision Goggles (NVG). If you are testing a two tube system, leave one ob-jective cap in place when testing the NVG. A goggle system will fail the test if one or both of the tubes exhibits a failure of the test.
NOTE
Testing must be performed in a darkened area such as a tent, room, shelter, or an outside area at night where there is no external lighting. Your eyes must be dark–adapted in order to perform this test. It takes approximately 10 minutes to become properly dark-adapted for low light resolution evaluation. However, if you have just been exposed to bright sunlight, dark adaptation will take longer.
AN/AVS-6 Light Interference Filters shall be installed when testing is performed. However, installation of AN/ PVS-7 Light Interference Filters is not necessary for this test.
Expect cosmetic blemishes such as chicken wire, black spots, and fixed-pattern noise to stand out while viewing through the Test Set when it is on the high light level. This is acceptable.
Review the following test procedures before entering the darkened area.
2-16
a. Attach the Test Set, Unit Assy with the adapter to the NVG as shown in Fig. 2–7.
b. Select High Light test by setting the High/Low Switch to High.
c. Turn on the Test Set, Unit Assy by selecting the Switch II/III position (Table 2–2) for the type of NVG being tested. Check to see if the green PWR ON light is lit.
d. Look through the NVG and view the projected test pattern being supplied by the Test Set, Unit Assy (Figure 2–8).
e. Adjust the eyepiece focus and the objective lens focus to obtain the sharpest view of the pattern.
2-17
Figure 2-7 Testing Night Vision Goggles

f. Determine the group number and element number of the smallest pattern resolvable.
Refer to Table 2–3 to determine if the goggles passed the High Light test.
NOTE
To successfully resolve a pattern which finds the tube ac-ceptable for use, you must be able to distinguish that the three vertical bars are in the vertical position and the three horizontal bars are in fact horizontal. This procedure re-quires you to scan left and right (for the vertical bars) and up and down (for the horizontal bars) as you observe the pattern.
g. Select Low Light test by setting the High/Low Switch to Low. Adjust eyepiece and objective focus, if necessary.
h. Determine the group number and element number of the smallest pattern resolvable. Refer to Table 2–3 to determine if the goggles passed the Low Light test.
i. For the AN/PVS-5 and AN/AVS-6 series NVG’S, switch the High/Low Switch to High and repeat steps d through h for the other tube.
j. If the goggles do not pass the test, refer to higher level of maintenance.
