WARNING AND CAUTION SUMMARY
WARNING
Only 1.5 Volt AA non-rechargeable alkaline and lithium batteries are authorized for use in ANVIS. Do not mix alkaline and lithium batteries within the same AA cartridge.
Toxic Material
The image-intensifier’s phosphor screen in each monocular contains toxic materials.
• A broken image intensifier assembly may be caused from damage to the binocular assembly, especially if the monocular housing is cracked by force.
• If an image intensifier assembly breaks, be extremely careful to avoid inhaling the phosphor screen material. Do not allow the material to come in contact with the mouth or open wounds on the skin.
• If the phosphor screen material contacts your skin, wash it off immediately with soap and water.
• If you inhale/swallow any phosphor screen material, drink a lot of water, induce vomiting, and seek medical attention as soon as possible.
Personnel Injury
Serious injury may result if the nitrogen tank valve breaks off due to tank upset. If the tank valve breaks, the tank can be propelled by the escaping gas and strike you or others.
Always secure the tank to an upright support before removing the tank valve guard and attaching the regulator valve to the tank.
It is crucial that the tube retainer is installed correctly. It is also critical that the notch in the image intensifier assembly engages the locating pin or key on the inside of the housing when the image intensifier is installed.
This alignment ensures the proper electrical contact between the housing and image intensifier assembly. On the silver image intensifiers, if the contacts do not align, the metallic housing will produce a short in the system’s electrical circuit. This will cause both image intensifiers to go out.

WARNING AND CAUTION SUMMARY - Continued
FIRST AID
For first aid or artificial respiration, see FM 21-11, First Aid for Soldiers.
Do not use the black plastic shell image intensifiers with the one-piece monocular housings (see Figure 3-36) because of missing EMI shielding which could result in system failure.
Keep the protective lens caps on the binocular when not in use.
Operate the ANVIS only under dark conditions.
Do not use acetone to clean the lenses or any component of the ANVIS.
If the ANVIS failed when the operator was using aircraft power and it did not recover when switched to battery power, do not attempt to troubleshoot that power pack with another binocular. Maintenance personnel must first troubleshoot the power pack with a voltmeter. Using that power pack again could damage another binocular due to a defective power pack that puts out excessive voltage.
Unit maintenance personnel are not authorized to open the ANVIS binocular.
The connector must go on correctly. If it is put on backwards, the binocular check will not work.
To prevent damage to the image intensifier tube, always remove the ANVIS goggle connector from the binocular being tested before removing the binocular from the test set.

Change 1 c
The TS-4348/UV test set is a delicate instrument. Exercise care not to overtighten or strip the threads on either the adapter or the body of the test set when installing or removing the adapter. Make sure to inspect the threads for damage.
If you do not hold the test set, it may fall off the end of the monocular.
While performing this test, do not remove the binocular from the test set unless the goggle connector is removed.
To prevent damage to the image intensifier tube, always turn the test set’s ON/OFF/POWER CHECK switch to OFF and remove the ANVIS goggle connector from the binocular before removing the binocular from the test set.
Do not use any adhesives or threadlocking compounds on the ANVIS mount or binocular.
Wipe off any excess thread-locking compound from plastic parts.
Do not attempt to adjust the eye-span distance by trying to pull the monoculars away from each other or push them together. Using force on the monoculars to make this adjustment will damage the adjusting mechanism inside the PAS. Use only the eye-span knob(s) to adjust the eye-span distance.

d Change 1
To prevent damage to the image intensifier tube, always remove the ANVIS goggle connector from the binocular being tested before removing the binocular from the test set.
There are different types of nitrogen available for AVIM personnel;
however, using the wrong type will render the ANVIS inoperable. Do not use oil-pumped nitrogen or the ANVIS will be coated with an oil film on the interior optic and component surfaces. Use only water-pumped nitrogen.
Do not overtighten the purge valve or you may damage the preformed packing.
Take precautions when backing out the purge valve so that the threads in the monocular housing will not be stripped. It may be necessary to work the purge valve in and out to remove it.
The flex circuit board is thin and flexible. Do not fold it sharply or fold it near a solder terminal.
Do not use any adhesive when setting the locking rings.
Do not use petroleum jelly to lubricate the preformed packing.
Do not get any fingerprints or lubrication on the lens surfaces of the cell.
The lens has a magnesium fluoride coating on its surface and is easily damaged. Clean the lens immediately with cotton-tipped applicators and either isopropyl alcohol for a glass lens or non-ammonia spray detergent for a plastic lens.
CAUTION
CAUTION
Change 1 e
Do not grease the threads on the inside of the eyepiece focus ring assembly or the threads on the outside of the monocular housing.
Do not get any grease on the threads on the outside of the monocular housing.
Do not use petroleum jelly to lubricate the preformed packing.
Do not lubricate the external threads on the monocular housing or the internal threads on the objective assembly.
Do not allow any lubrication to contaminate the lens surfaces of the cell.
However, If the lens becomes contaminated, use only isopropyl alcohol and cotton-tipped applicators to clean it by rubbing gently in a circular motion from the inside to the outside. The lens must be clean before proceeding.
Make sure that you do not cross-thread the focus ring and lens cell assembly when threading the components together.
Handle the image intensifier assembly carefully. Do not let the image intensifier drop on the workbench or the housing can crack.
Do not tilt the can while shooting air into the vent channel or propellant will spray out and contaminate the inside of the monocular.
CAUTION

WARNING AND CAUTION SUMMARY – Continued
Take care not to apply excessive force causing damage to the wires that connect the monoculars to the flex circuit board or bend the rod in the
PAS.
Do not touch any plastic component with the hot soldering iron.
Do not catch the flex circuit board on the edge of the eccentric shaft. If it does catch, rotating the eccentric shaft can bend the flex circuit board or pop it off the retainer pins.
Do not overtighten the setscrews or they will be stripped.
Do not overtighten the retaining nut or you may deform the eccentric shaft and cause the threaded stud and eye-span knob to bind.
Failure to perform the insert key(s) procedure correctly may lead to a system failure.

1-7 WARRANTY INFORMATION
ANVIS is warranted by the manufacturer to conform to design and manufacturing requirements, to remain free from defects in materials and workmanship, and to conform to performance specifications.
The warranty expiration date is printed on a label affixed to the end item and a separate label affixed to the image intensifier tube. The Direct Support (DS)/Intermediate maintenance level personnel make the determination of a warranty defect. If a warranty defect is detected, the product (either the end item or the image intensifier) is returned directly to the manufacturer for warranty service in accordance with applicable service (Army, Navy, and Marine Corps) procedures. Warranty defects may consist of the following:
• Image intensifier does not light up.
• Image tube fails the low light resolution and/or highlight resolution.
• Image intensifier exhibits any one, or more, of the operational defects described in “Inspection Criteria for Image Intensifier Operation” as defined in the Operator’s Maintenance Manual (such as, shading, edge glow, flashing, flickering or intermittent operation).
• Fails the electrical troubleshooting test.
• Obvious mechanical malfunction with no evidence of severe trauma that indicates customer damage.
The manufacturer will use the same list of criteria in verifying a defect covered by the warranty.

NOTE
This warranty does not cover any product that has been subject to misuse, neglect, accident, installation or maintenance in violation of the instructions in the Operator’s or Maintenance Technical Manuals. Also, a maintenance testing fee of $100.00 per image intensifier or $150.00 per end item will be charged to the appropriate activity for returns which are determined to have no evidence of a defect or have been subjected to misuse, neglect, etc. Therefore, all PMCS and troubleshooting procedures must be performed before determining that the end item or image intensifier requires warranty action.
a. Turn-in Procedures.
1 The pilot, after completing the PMCS and Troubleshooting, annotates the fault on DA Form 2404 (Army) or OPNAV Form 4790/138 (Navy), completes the appropriate blocks and turns the equipment into the unit maintainer (AVUM/ORG). The unit maintainer (AVUM/ORG) will perform all applicable PMCS and Troubleshooting before determining that the end item does not show any faults or must be sent to Intermediate maintenance (AVIM) for further maintenance actions. If it is determined that the end item needs Intermediate (AVIM) repair, the unit maintainer (AVUM/ORG) will annotate DA Form 2407 (Army), OPNAV Form 4790/60 (Navy/Marine Corps), and include this form with the end item and send it to appropriate Intermediate maintenance activity (AVIM). DA Pam 738-751 outlines distribution of copies.
2 The Intermediate maintenance activity (AVIM) performs all troubleshooting and maintenance procedures in accordance with the maintenance manual. If a defect is identified and the product is under warranty, per the warranty expiration date on the label, a warranty return is initiated.
NOTE
A newly fielded ANVIS that fails either the service upon initial receipt of material inspection or fails prior to the expiration of the warranty must be reported on a Product Quality Deficiency Report (PQDR), SF 368. The PQDR must be processed through the local CECOM AVIONICS LAR and transmitted to CDR, U.S. Army CECOM, ATTN: AMSEL-LC-LEO-D-CS- CFO, Fort Monmouth, NJ 07703-5000. This will ensure the unit submitting the PQDR will receive credit for that ANVIS. DA Pam 738-751 outlines distribution of copies.
NOTE
For units operating under SAMS, DA Form 5504 ( Maintenance Request) and 5504-1 (Maintenance Request Continuation Sheet) are the only forms used to file warranty claim actions. Do not use SF 368 to report Warranty Claims. DA Pam 738-751 outlines distribution of copies.

1-8 CORROSION PREVENTION AND CONTROL
Corrosion prevention and control (CPC) of Army materiel is a continuing concern. It is important that any corrosion problems with this equipment be reported so that the problem can be corrected and improvements made to prevent the problem in future equipment.
While corrosion is typically associated with rusting metal, it can also include deterioration of other materials such as contacts, injection-molded plastic, and foam inserts in the case. Unusual cracking, softening, swelling, or breaking of these other materials may be a corrosion problem.
If a corrosion problem is identified, report it using Standard Form 368, Product Quality Deficiency Report. Use keywords such as “corrosion,” “rust,” “deterioration,” or “cracking” to ensure that the information is identified as a CPC problem. Submit the form to the address specified in DA Pam 738- 751.
NAVY ONLY: Submit the SF 368 form to the FST.
Section II. Equipment Description and Data
1-9 EQUIPMENT CHARACTERISTICS, CAPABILITIES, AND FEATURES
The ANVIS is a helmet-mounted passive binocular that provides the capability for pilots to fly in terrain flight modes at night. The binocular is powered by batteries or batteries and an on-board aircraft power converter. The system amplifies ambient light from sources such as the moon, stars, and sky glow so the viewed scene becomes clearly visible to the operator. A light-emitting diode (LED) indicator on the visor mount comes on or blinks if the battery voltage drops below safe limits. The binocular can be adjusted for the distance between the operator’s eyes, vertical distance, tilt, eye relief, diopter setting and focus. In addition, the binocular may be flipped up and stored away from the eyes in an emergency.
1-10 LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR COMPONENTS
BINOCULAR ASSEMBLY (see Figure 1-3): Centered/Offset consists of two identical monoculars mounted under a pivot and adjustment shelf (PAS). The monoculars may be tilted, moved sideways (eye span), or back and forth (fore and aft).
Things to do to help speed up the return of your equipment:
1. Review your documents to make sure you have filled in all of the requested Information. Your documentation must clearly explain the problem(s) you are having with the equipment.
2. Double check that your return address is legible on all of your documents, as well as, the shipping package.
3. Make sure all of the documents, except your copies, are placed inside of the package before being returned.
4. Write the RA or RGA number on the outside of your package.
Failure to follow the above guidelines will result in a delay in the return of your equipment.

1-10 LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR COMPONENTS – Continued
PIVOT AND ADJUSTMENT SHELF (see Figure 1-3): Part of the AN/AVS-6(V)1 series. The Pivot and Adjustment Shelf (PAS) attaches to two monoculars and includes the fore-and-aft slide assembly. The PAS also includes the eye-span knob(s) and adjustment mechanism, the tilt lever and tilt mechanism, and a flexible printed circuit board. Electrical connections from the mount to the monoculars are provided by the PAS. See paragraph 1-11 for differences between original and later models.
OFFSET PIVOT AND ADJUSTMENT SHELF (see Figure 1-3): Part of the AN/AVS-6(V)2. The same as the PAS for the AN/AVS-6(V)1 series except the fore-and-aft slide assembly is offset to one side.
MONOCULAR ASSEMBLY (see Figure 1-3): Comprised of four major subassemblies — the objective lens assembly, monocular housing assembly, image intensifier assembly, (inside monocular housing), and eyepiece lens assembly. The monoculars attach to the pivot and adjustment shelf.
Figure 1-3. Binocular Assembly.

1-10 LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR COMPONENTS - Continued
OBJECTIVE LENS ASSEMBLY (see Figure 1-4): Collects the ambient night light and focuses it on the image intensifier assembly. It contains a lens cell, slotted adapter, focusing ring, preformed packing, wave washer, focus stop ring, and lock ring. Later versions include a Light Interference Filter (LIF) adapter and LIF on the lens cell.
MONOCULAR HOUSING (see Figure 1-4): Holds the image intensifier assembly and provides attaching threads for the objective and eyepiece lens assemblies. The monocular housing also provides electrical contact from the PAS to the image intensifier assembly.
IMAGE INTENSIFIER ASSEMBLY (see Figure 1-4): Amplifies the night light received from the objective lens assembly and sends the amplified image to the eyepiece lens assembly. The image intensifier assembly also contains contacts to provide electrical connection with the contacts in the monocular housing. This is a sealed unit. No adjustments are authorized. See paragraph 1-11 for differences between versions of the image intensifier assembly.
EYEPIECE LENS ASSEMBLY (see Figure 1-4): Focuses the image produced by the image intensifier assembly so it can be clearly viewed by the user and compensates for variations in eyesight. It contains the lens cell, preformed packing, eyepiece focus ring, and lock ring. See paragraph 1-11 for differences between versions of the eyepiece lens assembly.
Figure 1-4. Monocular Assembly Components.
1-11 DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MODELS
a. Binoculars. The ANVIS binoculars are identical except that the fore-and-aft slide assembly is offset on the PAS for the AN/AVS-6(V)2.
b. Eyepiece Lens Assemblies. Refer to Figure 1-5. There are two types of eyepieces. On earlier models of ANVIS you may find eyepieces with a smaller lens with 15 mm of eye relief and another later types on a larger diameter lens that provides 25 mm of eye relief. The 15 mm eyepiece can also be identified by a reference dot on the focus ring and diopter markings on the indicator plate.
The 25 mm eyepiece has the reference dot on the indicator plate and the diopter markings on the focus ring.
1-10
1-11 DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MODELS - Continued
Never mix 15 mm and 25 mm eyepieces. In addition, some older 15 mm eyepieces were made using plastic lenses. Later 15 mm lens were made from glass. There is no difference in the mechanical function between these two 15 mm variations, however there is a weight difference — the glass eyepieces are heavier. If a plastic eyepiece lens assembly requires replacement, replace both eyepiece lens assemblies on the ANVIS.
