Prior to removal, the Contractor shall make every attempt to inspect the condition of the sheathing/decking to determine condition.

b. The Contractor shall remove and legally recycle/dispose of the existing rain gutter system, 12" direct gravity turbine vent, drip edge, 6' of exposed chimney and related elements (bricks, chimney cap, crown, lead chimney sheathing and elastomeric boots in accordance with all flue, flue liner, and damper), federal, state and local laws and regulations. Chimney shall be demolished to a minimum of 6" below the roof deck.

c. The Contractor will be responsible for the proper recycling and disposal of all generated demolition material and equipment. The disposal shall be in accordance with the applicable sections of Connecticut State Law.

d. The Contractor shall be responsible for restoring any Government facilities or structures damaged as a result of the Contractor's actions. The Contractor shall also be responsible for any damage to private property or injury to any person as a result of the firm's operations. The Contractor shall notify the Technical Point of Contact immediately of damage to Government and private property and injury to any person resulting from the Contractors' operation. Also, the Contractor shall notify the Technical Point of Contact of damage to Government facilities due to vandalism or other causes on the day such damage is first noticed. Trucks and/or trailers will be driven on existing roads only and not across or through park areas to facilities. The Contractor shall restore landscape features (shrubs, flowers, grasses, etc.), which are damaged or destroyed by the firm's operation. Damaged or destroyed grass areas shall be re-planted as directed by the Technical Point of Contact, and shrubs and flowers which are damaged or destroyed shall be replaced from nursery stock of like size and kind

e. Prior to removal, any vegetative plantings around the perimeter of the building will be protected from harm with protective materials approved in advance by the Technical Point of Contact.

f. After demolition, all nails and debris will be removed from the area and a magnetic roller will be used to collect any nails that may have fallen from the roof. This roller shall be run over an area at least 15' from the exterior of the building, and along any storage areas, dumpster areas etc.

3. Installation:

Installation of architectural shingle roofing systems shall comply with the Statement of Work, local and federal regulations, and the National Building Code. Complete one building before proceeding to the next. The sequence of replacement must be approved by the technical point of contact.

a. Underlayment, Shingle and Sheathing/Deck Replacement

i. Installation shall adhere to manufacturer's instructions.

ii. Any roof sheathing that is damaged by moisture, rot, insects etc. shall be replaced with new sheathing and approved in advance by the Technical Point of Contact. If more than 10% of the sheathing is found to be compromised, the Contractor shall immediately notify the Technical Point of Contact prior to proceeding. Installation of new sheathing shall comply with all local building codes.

Added-Once chimney has been demolished below roof line (chimney is nonstructural and sits between two roof trusses), tie in replacement sheathing to cover penetration ensuring it connects with nearest, adjoining roof trusses.

iii. Install ice and water shield underlayment along eaves, valleys, and penetrations, extending at least 48 inches beyond the interior wall line. Install synthetic or felt underlayment (per manufacturer's specifications) over the remaining deck, overlapping seams by at least 4 inches.

iv. Ensure dissimilar materials (e.g., metal flashings and shingles) are separated with appropriate barriers, such as butyl rubber tape or gaskets, to prevent galvanic corrosion.

v. Install shingles, including a starter course, starting at the eaves and progressing upward, ensuring proper shingle offset per manufacturer's pattern, to prevent water infiltration and maintain aesthetic uniformity.

vi. Use full-length and width shingles wherever possible except where needed for required offset.

vii. Fasten shingles with corrosion-resistant roofing nails (minimum 1-1/4 to 1-1/2-inch length) as per manufacturer's instructions, typically 4-6 nails per shingle.

viii. Adhere to manufacturer's specifications for starter strips, shingle offsets, and fastener spacing to ensure warranty compliance and performance.

ix. Install ridge vents per manufacturer's instructions, ensuring adequate ventilation and compatibility with shingle ridge caps.

b. Flashing and 12-Inch Gravity Fed Turbine Vent

i. Install closure strips, flashing, and sealing materials at all transitions and terminations to provide a complete weather-tight system.

ii. Flash and seal roof at ridges, eaves, rakes, valleys, and penetrations using manufacturer-approved sealants and flashing materials.

iii. Minimize exposed fasteners on flashings by using concealed fastening methods where possible, such as hemmed edges or clips.

iv. On sloped surfaces, form flashing lap joints to shed water, with a minimum 4-inch overlap (or greater if specified by the manufacturer). Apply sealant within the lap area to ensure watertight integrity.

v. For butt joints in flashings, use splice plates or cover plates with waterproof sealants and sealant tapes to create a watertight joint. Provide firm underlying support for joints wider than 8 inches or as required by the manufacturer.

vi. For vent installation: install the vent base over the opening, aligning it properly with the roof slope.

Secure the base to the roof deck using roofing nails or screws, following manufacturer's specifications.

Apply roofing sealant around the base perimeter to prevent leaks. Install shingles or other roofing material around the vent base, overlapping the flashing to ensure water resistance. Apply additional sealant where shingles meet the vent base to reinforce waterproofing.

c. Gutter Replacement

i. Gutters shall be installed with a minimum slope of 1/4 inch per every 10 feet, to allow adequate drainage and to prevent standing water.

ii. Gutters shall extend slightly beyond the starter course, to ensure water does not run behind the gutters.

iii. Sealant, rivets, screws, brackets and any other necessary hardware shall be installed according to manufacturer's recommendations, in order to prevent leaks.

iv. Downspouts should be placed to allow appropriate drainage away from the building foundation

d. Drip Edge Installation

i. Install drip edge directly on the roof deck before underlayment. Position the horizontal leg on the deck and the vertical leg over the fascia. Nail every 8-10 inches on center using specified fasteners, starting from one end and overlapping sections by 2 inches. Seal overlaps with roofing cement.

ii. At rakes Install drip edge over the underlayment. Nail similarly, ensuring the drip leg extends beyond the rake edge. Overlap eave drip edge by at least 4 inches at corners.

iii. Apply self-adhered underlayment (ice and water shield) over the drip edge at eaves for valleys and low-slope areas. Ensure shingles overhang the drip edge by 1/4 to 3/4 inch.

e. Flashing and Elastomeric Vent Boots InstallationLead

i. Clean surfaces and apply asphalt roofing cement where flashing contacts the deck or shingles. Form lead to fit contours using a mallet or hand tools without sharp bends.

ii. Step Flashing (for Walls ): Install individual pieces interwoven with each shingle course. or Chimneys Place flashing against the wall, extending at least 4 inches onto the roof deck and 4 inches up the wall.

Nail or clip at the top edge only, then cover with counterflashing or siding. Overlap adjacent pieces by 2- 4 inches, sealing with cement.

iii. Form lead apron or saddle around pipes or vents, embedding in cement and overlapping underlayment by 4 inches. Integrate with vent boots if applicable.

iv. Elastomeric boot: Cut the boot's top to fit the pipe diameter snugly

v. Slide the boot over the pipe from the top. Position the base flange flat on the underlayment or deck, under surrounding shingles.

vi. Nail the flange every 6-8 inches around the perimeter, 1 inch from the edge. Apply elastomeric sealant under the flange and around the pipe base. If using a clamp, tighten at the top for a watertight seal.

vii. Lay shingles over the flange, sealing edges with roofing cement. Ensure upstream shingles overlap the boot by at least 2 inches.
