About this file
The document is a Bat Habitat Assessment report prepared by Cardno for the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) regarding a proposed U.S. Penitentiary and Federal Prison Camp in Letcher County, Kentucky. The report details habitat assessments for endangered bat species, including the Indiana Bat, Gray Bat, and Northern Long-eared Bat, at two potential sites (Roxana and Payne Gap). The assessment includes desktop and field investigations identifying habitat types such as mature hardwood second-growth, regenerated forest, shrubs, and herbaceous areas, with specific photographic and geological documentation of potential bat habitats.
The report was formally submitted on November 29, 2016, to Jessica Miller at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Kentucky Field Office, with the purpose of documenting bat habitat conditions for environmental compliance related to the proposed correctional facility construction. The document serves as a critical environmental assessment component, providing detailed habitat analysis to support the BOP's site selection and potential environmental impact evaluation for the planned correctional facility project.
