ELASTOMERIC CONCRETE
05/18
Amendment 0002
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 OVERVIEW
This item consists of filling the partial depth trenches through existing Portland cement concrete and asphalt overlay pavement between the light fixtures installed in full strength airfield pavement. This work consists of: saw cutting, chipping, and removing the existing pavement; cleaning and preparing the area for the infill materials. This work also includes placing, vibrating, and finishing the infill material in accordance with this specification and the construction plans.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
Amendment 0002****************************************************************
2.1 PAVEMENT TRENCH BETWEEN LIGHT BASE CANS
Trench infill elastomeric concrete material shall be a flexible concrete repair material with high tensile strength and strong bonding with PVC. Elastomeric concrete material shall remain flexible throughout anticipated temperature extremes to avoid cracking, delaminating and premature material loss due to thermal climatic changes and traffic loadings. Elastomeric concrete material shall be capable of supporting aircraft loads (250 psi tires), within 1 hour of placement. Elastomeric concrete material shall be gray in color and shall not be adversely affected by jet fuel or de-icing fluids. The elastomeric concrete material shall have a documented history of successful performance at an airfield for a minimum of 3 years.

PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 TIME OF APPLICATION
The ambient temperature and concrete surface temperature shall be within the range specified by the manufacturer’s requirements for that product at the time of application or in accordance with these specifications.
3.2 SAW-CUT PAVEMENT
Prior to performing removal of asphalt overlay and Portland cement concrete between new light base cans, the existing pavement shall be cut by a power driven concrete saw along the lines as indicated in the plans or where directed.
The sawing shall be such that any portion of the pavement to remain shall not be damaged. Any portion that is damaged or removed outside of the designated lines shall be replaced at no additional cost to the Owner. Pre-cutting of the
Airfield Lighting Improvements - Phase A CTGB 15-2012-A Grissom Air Reserve Base, IN P2 No. 472105
Section 03 99 00 Page 2 trench between the lights shall not be permitted ahead of the taxiway closures.
Sawing of the existing concrete pavement to be removed will not be paid for directly, but shall be considered incidental to the item to which it applies.
Where encountered, the Contractor shall exercise extreme caution when working around existing airfield lighting equipment. In-pavement lights consist of a 12” nominal diameter steel base can (24” depth) with conduits entering and existing the base can roughly 20” below the surface elevation. To protect the existing fixture and base can, the Contractor shall core over the base using a 20” diameter core bit. The concrete encasement remaining around the light base shall be protected and remain in place.
3.3 PAVEMENT REMOVAL
Use appropriate-sized impact equipment (e.g., jackhammer, hoe ram) to remove material within the limits of the saw-cuts. All pavement between the saw-cut and the existing joint line shall be carefully broken up and removed using hand-held jackhammers, 30 lb. or less, or other approved light-duty equipment which will not cause stress to propagate across the joint saw-cut and cause distress in the pavement which is to remain in place. In no instance shall the use of a guillotine-type breaker be permitted. Remove by hand any loose materials that remain. Damaged in-pavement light bases shall be removed and replaced at no additional cost to the Owner.
3.4 TRENCH FILL MATERIAL IN PAVEMENT
The procedure for trench fill material in pavement is as follows:
A) Make a vertical cut with a concrete saw to the depth indicated in the plans. For in-pavement lights, the saw cuts shall be parallel to each other approximately 4” apart to allow installation of 2” conduit for airfield lighting. 2” conduit shall be weighted down to prevent floating before setting of the infill material
B) Remove all asphalt overlay and Portland cement concrete to the depth indicated in the plans and details. Break out the concrete with air hammers or pneumatic drills and blow out the area with oil-free compressed air.
C) Clean the area to be repaired with high-pressure water. Allow area to dry completely if required by the material specification.
D) Treat the surface with a bond-promoting agent ONLY ON THE PCC SIDES AND BOTTOM in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Bonding agent shall not be applied to the asphalt surface of the trench walls.
Apply the bond promoting agent immediately before placing the repair mixture and spread with a stiff-bristle broom or brush. The use of liquid bonding agents shall be acceptable if recommended by the manufacturer’s requirements.
E) Finish the trench to a texture matching the adjacent area.
