ITEM Unit Weight Determination DATE 10-28-15 _

FILE ___________________________

COMPUTED BY DT CHECKED BY REF. DRWG. NO. ________________

Based on the soil phase relationships, the following two equations will be utilized to determine the dry and saturated unit weights.

𝑤 = 𝑆 × 𝛾𝑤 𝛾𝐷 − 1

𝐺 (Equation 1) 𝛾𝑠𝑎𝑡 = (1+𝑤)×𝛾𝑤 𝑤+1𝐺

(Equation 2)

Where w = Water Content S = Saturation G = Specific Gravity 𝛾𝐷= Dry United Weight 𝛾𝑤= Unit Weight of Water 𝛾𝑠𝑎𝑡= Saturated Unit Weight

It is assumed 𝛾𝑤= 62.4 pounds per cubic foot (pcf), G = 2.65 (sands range from 2.63 to 2.67), initial saturation (S) of 80 percent, and 𝛾𝐷= 115 pcf. The resulting moisture content, w, and saturated unit weight, 𝛾𝑠𝑎𝑡, is 13.2 percent and 139 pcf respectively.

ITEM Evaluation of Design Shear Strength Parameters DATE 05/07/15 ________

COMPUTED BY AR CHECKED BY REF. DRWG. NO. ___________

Estimation of the soil strength parameters for use in slope stability analysis were based on field explorations, laboratory testing (direct shear), published shear strength correlations, and engineering judgment. Field explorations included twenty-six (26) test holes from the 2014 subsurface exploration conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Using “raw” Standard Penetration Test (SPT) blow counts (standard penetration resistance) and calculated vertical effective overburden stress, a relative density can be estimated from "Correlations Between Relative Density and Standard Penetrations Resistance" published in the NAVFAC Soil Mechanics Design Manual, DM 7.01 (Figure 3, pg. 7.1-87).

With a known soil classification and relative density, the effective angle of internal friction Φ' (degrees) can be estimated using the "Correlations of Strength Characteristics for Granular Soils" also published in DM 7.01 (Figure 7, pg 7.1-149). This approximate correlation is only appropriate for cohesionless materials without plastic fines. An example calculation is presented below.

Calculation Example:

Problem Statement - For test hole TH14-P5B-15, determine the effective angle of internal friction at a depth of 35 to 36.5 feet below ground surface (bgs). Groundwater was encountered at 19.4 feet bgs.

From the test hole log, the Standard Penetration Resistance (N, blows/foot) recorded at 35 to 36.5 feet bgs is 24 and the soil was classified as poorly graded sand with silt (SP-SM). Total unit weight of soil is assumed to be ~ 139 pcf. The vertical effective stress is calculated as follows:

Vertical Effective Stress

35 36.5

3536.5
219.462.4

3.95

With the standard penetration resistance and vertical effective stress, go to NAVFAC DM 7.1 Figure 3 and estimate the relative density.

Using the relative density estimate of ~ 66% from the previous step and the SP-SM soil classification, go to NAVFAC DM 7.1 Figure 7 and estimate Φ'. In this example, Φ' was estimated at 34 degrees.

This procedure was used to evaluate all of the SPT data collected during the field explorations. Included in this calculation package are summary tables for each test hole presenting the data used to estimate the soil strength and the design value assigned to each stratigraphic unit.

Using the correlation between SPT values and relative density in Table 22-1 of the Engineering Geology Field Manual from the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation’s and the developed geographic cross sections each SPT data point was assigned one of the design material types. The samples were sorted by material type to provide a range of strengths associated with each material. To be conservative and consistent with the Corps’ guidance, the design strength parameters used the 33 percentile strength value. Based on the direct shear results, a minimal amount of cohesion was assigned to the materials.

Limit equilibrium static slope stability analyses were conducted to determine factors of safety of the proposed bank protection using GeoStudio (Slope/W) 2012. Factors of safety for the critical failure slip surfaces were calculated using Spencer’s Method which satisfies all conditions of force and moment equilibrium. Cross sections at Station 1360+00, 1389+10, and 1398+00 were selected to represent the most critical sections along the project alignment. Factors for the selection of the critical cross sections included the height of the temporary slopes, cross section geometry, groundwater conditions, and estimated soil shear strengths. The subsurface profile and adopted design strength parameters were based on site investigations, characterization of physical soil samples, SPT and BPT blow counts, CPT data interpretation, laboratory testing, and engineering judgment.

Loading Cases EM 1110-2-1902 and EM 1110-2-1913 provide guidance and methods for analysis of slope stability. In addition, these Engineer Manuals provide minimum acceptable factors of safety for prescribed loading conditions. The loading conditions analyzed for this project are described below.

Temporary Cut Slopes - During Construction: Dewatering will be required for the project. It was assumed the dewatering efforts have lowered the groundwater table to the elevation corresponding to 5 feet below the bottom of the excavation subgrade. The cut slopes are 2H: 1V and 1.5H:1V; each slope was analyzed separately.

End of Construction: Construction of the 24-inch thick grouted stone revetment is complete, “toe-down” excavation is backfilled, construction dewatering system has been decommissioned, and groundwater levels have stabilized to historic average elevations. Historic average groundwater elevations were adopted using data collected from four instrumented monitoring wells constructed along the project alignment.

Steady Seepage - Full flood stage: The project is designed to provide erosion protection for the 190-year flood event. Full flood stage condition for the 190-yr event includes three feet of freeboard. The grouted stone protected slopes were analyzed assuming a fully developed phreatic surface at the full flood stage condition.

Sudden Drawdown: This case represents an extended full flood stage with a fully developed phreatic surface and the river level suddenly drops faster than the soils can drain. This condition can result in the development of excess pore water pressure which may result in the slope becoming unstable. However, the soil conditions along this project alignment are predominately free draining coarse alluvium. In addition, the design includes a subdrain system behind the grouted stone. Therefore, the sudden drawdown case will most likely not create an unstable slope condition for this project.

Earthquake Seismic stability was analyzed using the pseudostatic procedure. Earthquake loading was represented by a seismic load coefficient (k) equal to 50% of the peak horizontal ground acceleration (PGA) for the Operating Basis Earthquake (OBE) and the Maximum Design Earthquake (MDE). The MDE PGA= 0.75g and the OBE PGA = 0.24g.
