1.0 INTRODUCTION

DLZ is planning the construction of a Watermain at the above referenced site in East

Chicago, Lake County, Indiana. The purpose of this exploration was to determine the general subsurface soil and groundwater conditions in the general area of the proposed

Watermain alignment.

The scope of work included subsurface exploration by drilling a total of seven (7) soil borings at the locations shown on boring location plan, laboratory testing of the soils, engineering analysis of the pertinent geotechnical data, and preparation of the boring logs, gradation curves and this report.

The purpose of this study was to perform sieve analysis (gradation) of the soil samples in order to determine if the on-site granular materials are suitable to reuse for sewer line backfill and also if the on-site materials meets the requirements of INDOT B-Borrow structural backfill. Samples obtained during this exploration will be retained in our facility for a period of 60 days, after which time they will be discarded unless other arrangements are made.

2.0 FIELD AND LABORATORY INVESTIGATION

2.1 Field Investigation

Subsurface conditions for the proposed project were investigated on August 20, 2018.

Truck-mounted drilling equipment using hollow-stem-augers was utilized to complete the borings. Split-spoon samples were obtained by using Standard Penetration Test (SPT) procedures in accordance with the American Association of State Highway and

From 151st Street to Columbus Drive

Transportation Officials (AASHTO), Standard Test Method T-206. Split-spoon samples and standard penetration test resistances (SPT N-values) were obtained continuously to a depth of 7 feet, as indicated on the boring logs. Subsequent to the drilling activities, each test hole was backfilled in accordance with the specifications set forth by the Indiana

Department of Transportation (INDOT) document “Exhibit C” and the INDOT “Aquifer

Protection Guidelines.”

The number, locations and depths of the borings were selected by K&S and DLZ. The soil boring locations were marked in the field by a representative of K&S. Approximate boring locations are presented on boring location plan, Exhibit-1, in Appendix A.

The boring logs, which show visual descriptions of all soil strata encountered, using the

AASHTO classification system, are included in Appendix A. Sampling information and other pertinent field data and observations are also included on the boring logs. In addition, a Field Classification sheet defining the terms and symbols used on the logs and explaining the standard penetration test (SPT) procedure is provided immediately preceding the boring logs in Appendix A.

2.2 Laboratory Investigation

The soil samples obtained from each soil boring were logged, labeled, sealed and transported to our laboratory for further classification and testing. The soil samples were visually classified by a geotechnical engineer in accordance with the AASHTO Soil

Classification System (AASHTO M-145) and the visual classifications verified or modified based upon the results of laboratory tests. Final boring logs were subsequently prepared and are included in Appendix A. Soil index property tests including: grain size distribution and analyses (AASHTO T-11/T-27), natural moisture content tests (AASHTO T-265) and organic content tests (AASHTO T-267) were performed on representative soil samples.

The results of all laboratory tests are included on the respective boring logs and/or summary sheets in Appendix B.

From 151st Street to Columbus Drive

3.0 GENERAL SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS

3.1 Subsurface Conditions

The general subsurface conditions at the site were investigated by drilling a total of seven

(7) borings extending to a depth of 7 feet at each location. The subsurface conditions disclosed by the field investigation are summarized in the following paragraphs. Detailed descriptions of the subsurface conditions encountered in each test boring are presented on the boring logs in Appendix A. It should be noted that the stratification lines shown on the soil boring logs represent approximate transitions between material types. In-situ stratum changes could occur gradually or at slightly different depths and variations in the soil stratigraphy.

In general, approximately 3 to 4 inches of asphalt pavement was noted at the surface of these borings. Underlying the asphalt pavement, approximately 6 to 10 inches of slag

(aggregate base) fill was noted with the exception of boring RB-3, where approximately 3 inches of red brick fill was noted below the asphalt pavement and above the slag fill.

Underlying the above mentioned aggregate base (slag and brick) fill, mostly brown and occasionally brown to dark brown sand (A-3) was noted in upper 2 to 3 feet, which was followed by natural brown sand (A-3) through the borings termination depth of 7 feet below the existing grade. The brown to dark brown sand noted in upper 2 to 3 feet depth in

Borings RB-3 through RB-7 could possibly be a fill material.

The density of the granular soils varied from loose to medium dense, as exhibited by N-values ranging from 9 to 29 blows per foot (bpf). The laboratory moisture contents in the sand ranged from 5.1 to 19.7 percent. The organic content of sand samples ranged from

0.4 percent to 2.1 percent. All the test results are provided in Appendix B.

3.2 Groundwater Conditions

Groundwater observations were made during drilling operations (by noting the depth of water on the drilling tools) and in the open boreholes following withdrawal of the drilling augers and are reported on the boring logs. Groundwater was not encountered during the present subsurface exploration. Please note that while groundwater observations in granular soil are generally accurate at the time of the observation, groundwater levels

From 151st Street to Columbus Drive are subject to seasonal and long-term fluctuations in response to climatic conditions

(precipitation, evaporation, surface water runoff), man-made influences, and other environmental or physical factors.

4.0 DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS

Based on the results of gradation tests, it may be concluded that the brown sand (A-3) noted below the slag fill (aggregate base) is considered suitable to use as a B-Borrow structural backfill material. In Borings RB-3 through RB-7, brown to dark brown sand was encountered below the slag fill. Brown to dark brown sand was observed to be extending to a depth of about 2 to 3 feet below the existing grade. This sand should be carefully observed to see the presence of any organics or other unsuitable non-soil materials. The slag fill could be stockpiled and re-used as an aggregate base (if approved by the project engineer).

Classification shown on the test boring logs are made by visual inspection of samples and confirmed/modified based on index property tests.

Standard Penetration Test (AASHTO T 206) – Driving a 2.0” O.D., 1 3/8” I.D. sampler a distance of 1.0 foot into undisturbed soil with a 140 pound hammer free falling a distance of 30 inches. It is customary for K&S to drive the sampler 6 inches to seat the sampler into undisturbed soil, then perform the test.

The number of hammer blows for seating the sampler and making the test are recorded for each 6 inches of penetration on the drill log (Example – 6-8-9). The standard penetration test result can be obtained by adding the last two figures (i.e. 8+9 = 17 blows/foot).

Strata Changes – In the column “Soil Classification” on the test boring logs, the horizontal lines represent strata changes. A solid line (_______) represents actually observed change. A dashed line (_ _ _ _ _) represents an estimated change.

Ground Water – Observations were made at the times indicated. Porosity of soil strata, weather conditions, site topography, etc., may cause changes in the water levels indicated on the logs.

General Qualifications

• This report has been prepared in order to aid in the evaluation of this property and to assist the architect and/or engineer in the design of this project. The scope is limited to the specific project and location described herein. In the event that any changes in the design or location of the building as outlined in this report are planned, we should be informed so that changes can be reviewed and the conclusions of this report modified as necessary. We recommend that we be authorized to review the project plans and specifications within our scope of work to confirm that the recommendations contained in this report have been interpreted in accordance with our intent. Without this review, we will not be responsible for misinterpretation of our data, our analysis, and/or our recommendations, nor how these are incorporated into the final design.

• The analysis and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon the data obtained from the soil borings performed at the locations indicated on the location diagram and from any other information discussed in this report. This report does not reflect any variations which may occur between these borings. In the performance of subsurface explorations, specific information is obtained at specific locations at specific times. However, it is a well-known fact that variations in soil and rock conditions exist on most sites between boring locations and also, such situations as groundwater levels vary from time to time. The nature and extent of variations may not become evident, it will be necessary for a re-evaluation of the recommendations of this report after performing on-site observations during construction period and noting the characteristics of any variations.
