3.2.3 Protection

Conversely, soil compaction must also be avoided as much as possible.

Areas with prepared surfaces shall be protected from surface erosion and from compaction or damage by vehicular or pedestrian traffic. Equipment access and travel shall be routed around all planting areas. Repeated passes over the same area shall be limited during all seed bed preparation work. Equipment having low unit pressure ground contact shall be used whenever possible.

3.3 INSTALLATION

Both Broadcast Seeding and Drill Seeding may be used. Either seeding procedure shall ensure even coverage. Gravity seed applicators, which drop seed directly from a hopper onto the prepared soil, shall not be used because of the difficulty in achieving even coverage, unless otherwise approved. Seeding operations shall not take place when the wind velocity will prevent uniform seed distribution and, in woodland areas, will follow any tree planting. Refer to Section 32 01 90.41 03 IMPLEMENTATION AND MANAGEMENT paragraph 3.1.2.1 Seed Installation for further drill seeding and broadcast seeding requirements.

3.3.1 Broadcast Seeding

Broadcast seeding shall be utilized when slopes are greater than 4 to 1.

Seed shall be uniformly broadcast at the requisite rate for the given plant community. Cover crop will be seeded at the rate shown in Table 54.

Half the total rate of seed application shall be broadcast in 1 direction, with the remainder of the seed rate broadcast at 90 degrees from the first direction. Seed shall be covered a maximum 1/4 inch depth by disk harrow, steel mat drag, cultipacker or other approved device.

3.3.2 Drill Seeding

Drill seeding is the preferred method and shall be utilized whenever possible. Seed shall be uniformly drilled to a maximum 1/4-inch depth.

Drill seeding shall occur across slopes parallel with the contours, and not up and down slopes.

3.4 SURFACE EROSION CONTROL

Refer to Section 01 57 20.02 03 ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION FOR INDIANA and 31 00 00 EARTHWORK for specific requirements.

3.5 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

The Contractor shall demonstrate to the Contracting Officer, prior to commencement of seeding, that seeding equipment is calibrated to sow at the specified rates.

3.5.2 Confirmation of Seed Use

For materials provided in bags, the empty bags shall be retained for recording the amount used. For materials provided in bulk, the weight certificates shall be retained as a record of the amount used. The amount
