About this file
This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) file for a Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Mat procurement by the Engineer Research and Development Center Geospatial Science Laboratory (ERDC GSL). The Q&A addresses three key technical specifications: mat identification tagging, non-skid surface requirements, and color specifications. Specifically, the document clarifies that each mat must be permanently marked with a unique identification number on the bottom, have a .125-inch pyramid-shaped non-skid texture embossed on the top wearing surface, and be colored in an "Army" green using pigmented resin.
The answers provide precise technical guidance for manufacturers, detailing the exact identification number format (MIL-AAAAA-xx/yy-zzzz), confirming that the non-skid surface must be molded into the panel rather than post-applied, and specifying that all panel surfaces must be colored green using pigmented resin. These clarifications suggest the document is part of a technical specification process for a military infrastructure or engineering material procurement.

Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Mat for ERDC GSL
Question and Answer
Question #1 – One Note 2 in Appendix A - is special information on the Tag needed on panel?
And can the Tag be Place in a different spot (for example along the smooth surface of the Under
Edge (U.E) of the panel to avoid Non-Skid Surface disruptions?
Answer 1 - Note 2 has been updated in the “Appendix A Road Mat Detailed Drawings
2025.pdf” document. The text is as below. The tag should be placed on the bottom of the mat.
EACH MAT SHALL BE PERMANENTLY MARKED WITH AN IDENTIFICATION
NUMBER AT THE LOCATION SHOWN, ON THE BOTTOM OF THE MAT.
MAT IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS SHALL BE ASSIGNED AS FOLLOWS:
MIL-AAAAA-xx/yy-zzzz
WHERE:
AAAAA = MANUFACTURER IDENTIFICATION CODE (CAGE)
xx = MONTH MANUFACTURED, yy = YEAR MANUFACTURED zzzz = MAT NUMBER, SEQUENTIALLY NUMBERED, 0001 THROUGH n
Spec 3.2.1.5 references an embossed wearing surface pattern with a defined pyramid shaped non skid texture. The Spec further on in para 4.4 -f. Calls on the use of a "Non-skid coating" referring to a specified particle size.
Question #2 – Can you please clarify the intent of the spec? Does ERDC want a panel that has a non skid surface that is molded or cut in and consisting of only that material in which has been infused in OR is a post applied non skid material applied to the top surface acceptable as an alternative?
Answer 2 - The top wearing surface of each panel shall be embossed with a .125- inch x .125-inch x .125-inch pyramid shape non-skid texture except for the underlap edges.
Question #3 – If a post applied coating is acceptable, is it required to be pigmented "Army" green as noted in para 3.2.1.4
Answer 3 - All surfaces of the FRP panels shall be colored representative of an “Army” green using pigmented resin.
