GYPSUM BOARD SHAFT WALL SYSTEMS

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Furnish and install gypsum board shaft wall systems as indicated on the drawings and specified.

1.2 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

A. Gypsum board shaft wall systems shall have been are pretested assemblies of gypsum boards and other components designed for erection from room-side of shaft.

B. Fire-Resistance Ratings: Where indicated, provide materials and construction which are identical to those of assemblies, including those incorporating elevator door and other framing, whose fire resistance has been determined per ASTM E119 by a testing and inspecting organization acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.

C. Sound Attenuation Performance: Provide gypsum board shaft systems designed and pretested to achieve a minimum STC Rating of 50.

1.3 SUBMITTALS

A. Product data from manufacturers for the gypsum board shaft wall system specified.

B. Product test reports indicating and interpreting test results relative to compliance of gypsum board shaft wall systems with fire resistance, and acoustical performance requirements.

C. Research reports or evaluation reports of the model code organization acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction which evidence system's compliance with requirements.

D. LEED Submittals: Submit all applicable Accountability Forms as required by LEED For New Construction for the following:

1. Product Data for Credit MR 4: For products having recycled content, documentation indicating percentages by weight of postconsumer and preconsumer recycled content. Include statement indicating cost for each product having recycled content.

2. Materials and Resources credit 5 - Regional Materials, Extracted, Processed & Manufactured Regionally

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Single Source Responsibility: Obtain products for gypsum board shaft wall systems from a single manufacturer for each type of system indicated.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 GYPSUM BOARD SHAFT WALL SYSTEMS

A. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with specified requirements, provide products by one of the following (or equal):

1. Georgia Pacific Corporation.

2. Gold Bond Building Products Div., National Gypsum Co.

3. United States Gypsum Co.

B. Provide standard materials and components listed in manufacturer's published product literature for gypsum board shaft wall systems of type and application indicated.

1. Provide gypsum boards in maximum lengths available to eliminate or minimize end-to-end butt joints and in thickness required to produce assemblies complying with structural and other performance requirements.

2. Provide mold resisting panels on the interior surface of shafts.

C. Steel Framing: ASTM C 645, of profile, size, and base metal thickness required to produce assemblies complying with structural performance requirements, with sectional properties computed to conform with AISI "Specification for Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members."

D. Gypsum Shaftwall Board: ASTM C 442, Type X liner panel or coreboard designed for shaft wall construction, with moisture-resistant paper facings.

E. Gypsum Wallboard: ASTM C 36, Type X, 1 inch thick, tapered and featured edges for prefilling.

F. Trim Accessories: Provide cornerbeads, edge trim and control joints of material and, for edge trim, shapes complying with ASTM C 1047 and gypsum board shaft wall manufacturer's recommendations.

G. Gypsum Wallboard Joint Treatment Materials: Provide materials complying with ASTM C 475, ASTM C 840, recommendations of gypsum board shaft wall manufacturer for the application indicated.

H. Miscellaneous Materials: Provide auxiliary materials for gypsum board shaft wall systems of the type and grade recommended by the manufacturer of the system and as follows:

1. Laminating Adhesive: Special adhesive or joint compound recommended for laminating gypsum boards of type indicated.

2. Gypsum Board Screws: ASTM C 1002.

3. Runner Fasteners: Low-velocity tool-driven fasteners of type, size and material required to withstand loading conditions imposed on shaft wall system without exceeding allowable design stress of runner, fastener or structural substrate.

4. Concealed Acoustical Sealant: As Specified in Section 07920.

5. Spot Grout: ASTM C 475, setting-type joint compound of type recommended for spot grouting hollow metal door frames.

6. Sound Attenuation Blankets: Unfaced mineral fiber blanket insulation produced by combining mineral fibers of type described below with thermosetting resins to comply with ASTM C 665 for Type I (blankets without membrane facing).

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION OF GYPSUM BOARD SHAFT WALL SYSTEMS

A. Install gypsum board shaft wall systems to comply with performance and other requirements indicated as well as with manufacturer's installation instructions.

B. At penetrations in shaft wall, maintain fire rating of entire shaft wall assembly by installing supplementary fire protection behind boxes containing wiring devices, and similar items.

C. Isolate shaft wall system from transfer of structural loading to system, both horizontally and vertically. Provide slip type joints to attain lateral support and avoid axial loading.

D. Seal gypsum board shaft walls at perimeter of each section which abuts other work and at joints and penetrations within each section. Install acoustical sealant to withstand dislocation by air pressure differential between shaft and external spaces; comply with manufacturer's instructions and ASTM C 919.

PART 1 – GENERAL

1.1 SECTION INCLUDES:

2.2 LIGHT GAGE METAL FRAMING, GENERAL

A. Light Gage Metal Framing, General:

Provide not less than gage indicated on the Drawings nor less than recommended gage for L/360 deflection of framing, whichever is greater.

2.3 LIGHT GAGE METAL FRAMING, 18 GAGE AND LIGHTER

B. Tracks, Sills and Headers: Unpunched channels sized for stud flanges, gage the same as studs unless otherwise noted. Under structural framing members and decking, provide deflection track at head of partition, as indicated on the Drawings.

C. Flexible Top Track: UL-listed and labeled assembly.

1. Specified Manufacturer: Metal-Lite., Anaheim, CA (800/886-6824).

2. Acceptable Manufacturers: None identified. Equivalent products of other manufacturers will be considered in accordance with the "or equal" provision specified in the General Terms and Conditions.

3. Flexible Head Track: The System as manufactured by Metal-Lite, Inc., comply with California Building Code (CBC) Section 702 and approved by OSHPD, system number to suit fire rating of wall or partition and to suit installation conditions, as indicated on the Drawings. System shall consist of minimum 16 gage galvanized sheet steel components with formed steel channels with slotted flanges and with pop-up tabs in the web.

4. Flute cover plates: Flanged galvanized sheet steel, formed to suit~ profile of decking flutes.

5. Mineral wool fire stopping insulation: As specified in Section 07840 - Firestopping and Smoke Seals.

D. Finish: Hot dipped galvanized, ASTM A 653/A 653M, G60 (Z180).

C. Screws: As recommended or required by manufacturer, self-drilling, self-tapping in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and ML/SFA specifications.

2.4 LIGHT GAGE METAL FRAMING, 16 GAGE AND HEAVIER

A. 16 Gage and Heavier Studs: ASTM C 645, minimum yield strength 33 ksi, types, sizes as indicated on Drawings, punched web unless otherwise indicated, with screw-type flanges.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 LIGHT GAGE METAL FRAMING ERECTION

A. Track Installation: Place and align tracks in configurations shown.

1. Secure top, bottom and side tracks at maximum 24-inches on center to structure using fasteners as specified in Section 05090- Anchors and Fasteners.

2. Provide flexible head track as indicated on Drawings, to prevent transfer to non-load bearing framing.

B. Studs and Joists Installation: Install studs/joists at 16-inches on center typically, unless otherwise indicated. Studs at gypsum board walls and partitions shall be placed so that their flanges point in the same direction.

1. Do not splice studs and joists.

2. Provide studs not more than 2-inches from each corner of wall or abutting construction.

3. Place 18 gage and heavier studs with bottom bearing solidly on bottom of track to transfer axial loads from stud to underlying structure.

4. Double studs adjacent to doors and openings and securely attach to top and bottom track either by welding or screws, and to door head tracks with clip angles. Locate additional studs not more than 2 inches from door and window frames, abutting partitions or partition corners. Above door and window openings place a section of track with a clip angle at each end horizontally, and attach securely to the adjacent vertical studs.

a. Install cut-to-Iength studs at the location of vertical joints and at standard spacing over the door frame header extending to the ceiling track.

b. At corner of stud walls provide three studs minimum. Locate studs to provide surfaces for attachment of all interior and exterior facings.

5. Coordinate erection of studs/joists with installation of service utilities to minimize discontinuity in framing. Align stud web openings.

6. Maintain clearance under building structural members to avoid deflection transfer to non-load bearing framing.

7. Brace studs/joists to make rigid with steel channel bridging.

a. Provide bridging in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations, installed in the "punch outs" of their studs.

b. Steel channels shall be in longest possible lengths, lapped 12-inches and wire tied at joints.

c. Install interlocking bridging member through stud web openings at studs

7-feet 6 inches in length or greater.

d. At partitions/walls to receive ceramic tile or stone finish, provide 3/4-inch channel horizontal stiffener at no more than 5 feet o.c. vertically. Weld stiffeners to each stud.

e. Provide 7/8 inch hat shaped channel at mid-point of stud area above ceilings where gypsum board is not applied.

f. Provide additional 3/4-inch channel 6 inches above door head and extending two stud spaces beyond jamb studs.

8. At acoustically insulated partitions, install specified continuous strip of vinyl foam tape between floor and floor track, between ceiling and ceiling track, and at underside of steel deck and where partition vertical edges abut walls and surfaces of different materials.

C. Built-in Components: Provide framed openings for all built-in and recessed components.

1. Coordinate erection of framing with installation of bucks, anchors, backing, blocking, plumbing, mechanical and electrical components to provide necessary clearances and supports.

2. Coordinate erection of framing with requirements for door and window frame supports and attachments.

D. Backing Installation: Install stud track or sheet metal backing as indicated and as necessary to support all products attached to wall or ceiling after completion of finish surface, including toilet and bath accessories, plumbing and electrical fixtures, electrical panels, toilet partitions, casework, hardware, handrails and trim.

1. Coordinate precise locations of backing with Work specified in other Sections.

2. Plates shall be not lighter than 16 gage x 6 inches wide, and of such lengths as to span minimum of 3 studs.

3. Weld or bolt backing plates rigidly to studs as indicated on the Drawings and shown on reviewed shop drawings.

4. Weld or bolt plates at top and bottom of each stud crossing.

5. Paint bare surfaces of plates and welds with metal primer after installation.

E. Openings and Recesses: Provide framed openings for all recessed components.

Coordinate installation of framing with requirements for door and window frame supports and attachments.

F. Bracing Installation: Install bracing at studs/joists to make rigid. Do not install cross bracing at double stud walls and partitions unless acceptable to Contracting Officer, to preserve acoustical quality of assembly.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Coordinate with related Work to provide blocking for items mounted on finished surfaces and to provide allowances for pipes and other items inside partitions and walls.

B. Tolerances: Install walls and partitions on straight lines, plumb, free of twists or other defects, and contacting a 10 foot straightedge for its entire length at any location within a 1/8 inch tolerance. Install horizontal framing level within a tolerance of 1/8 inch in 12 feet in any direction.

1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. All materials shall be delivered in their original unopened packages and stored protected from damage. Do not store material directly on grade. Provide adequate support to prevent bowing of material prior to installation.

B. Store welding electrodes in accordance with AWS D12.1.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 CONVENTIONAL DRYWALL AND PLASTER SUSPENSION SYSTEMS

A. Provide products manufactured by one of following (or equal):

B. Light Gage Metal Framing:

1. Metal framing shall be formed from corrosion resistant-steel conforming to requirements of ASTM A653, 33 ksi minimum.

2. Metal framing shall be zinc coated in conformance to requirements of ASTM A926, G60.

3. Metal framing shall be manufactured in conformance to ASTM C645.

4. Install metal framing according to ASTM C1007, Standard Specification for Installation of Load-Bearing (Transverse and Axial) Steel Studs and Related Accessories.

C. Studs: SSMA, ICBO ER-4943P, minimum yield 33 ksi, hot-dipped galvanized or electro galvanized sheet steel, G-60, C Stud type, punched web (except tracks and joists), C-shaped, sizes required to conform to details and scheduled wall thicknesses. Studs shall be rolled from new steel sheet and shall not be produced from re-rolled steel. Stud flanges shall not be less than 1-5/16 inch wide; track flanges, not less than 1-1/4 inch wide.

1. Wall Framing and Furring for Plaster and Mortar Beds: Studs and tracks shall be 18 gage minimum, unless otherwise indicated.

2. Wall Framing and Furring for Gypsum Wallboard: Studs and tracks shall be 20 gage minimum, unless otherwise indicated.

3. Load-Bearing Studs: Studs and members thicker than 18 gage (0.0438 inch) shall conform to ASTM C 995.

4. Stud gages indicated on Drawings or specified are the minimum. Where required stud height and/or loads exceed code requirements or manufacturer's recommendations, provide heavier gage studs and/or decrease stud spacing as necessary to conform to code requirements.

D. Suspended and Furred Ceiling Systems and Wall Furring: Suspended ceiling framing system shall support finished ceiling, light fixtures, air diffusers, and accessories, as required. suspension system shall provide a maximum deflection of L/240. Carrying channels shall be fabricated from minimum 0.0548 inch thick cold-rolled steel, 1-1/2 inch wide x 7/16 inch deep. Carrying channels for supports under ducts shall be 2 inches in size as specified. Carrying channels shall be fabricated from hot-dip galvanized coated sheet.

1. Plaster Ceilings: Cross furring members shall conform to ASTM C 645, and shall be fabricated from cold-rolled steel, 3/4 inch wide x 7/16 inch deep. Furring members shall be fabricated from hot-dip galvanized coated sheet.

2. Gypsum Wallboard Ceilings: Furring members shall be fabricated from cold-rolled steel, 7/8 inch x 2-9/16 inches. Furring members shall be fabricated from hot-dip galvanized coated sheet.

E. Framed Ceilings: Framed ceiling framing system shall support finished ceiling, light fixtures, air diffusers, and accessories, as required. suspension system shall provide a maximum deflection of L/240.

1. Plaster and Gypsum Wallboard Ceilings: Ceiling joists shall conform to ASTM C 645, hot-dip galvanized coated steel, C-shaped, unpunched, 20 gage minimum thickness, unless noted otherwise.

F. Framing Accessories: Provide all standard related accessories including floor and ceiling tracks, clips, web stiffeners, anchors, and similar items, of same manufacture as each type of stud specified, and as required for a complete installation.

G. Splay Wires and Compression Struts: Approved manufacturers acceptable to manufacturer of ceiling grids, gages and types as required by building codes for ceiling types and weights specified.

1. Vertical Compression Strut: Provide USG Donn Compression Post, or equal, with the manufacturer’s standard corrosion inhibiting finish and of the types and designs complying with requirements of authorities having jurisdiction and CBC Seismic Zone 4 requirements. provide base attachment clip for connection of vertical strut to main beams.

H. Wires: Soft-annealed galvanized steel wire, 8 gage for hanger wires and 16 gage for framing unless otherwise specified.

I. Fasteners: Wafer-head screws, self-drilling type for 20 gage metal and heavier. ASTM C954 self-drilling, self-tapping screws, Type S-12 pan head, 1/2 inch long.

J. Fire Rated Acoustical Foam Tape: Compressible, closed cell polyvinyl chloride foam with pressure sensitive adhesive, in rolls with protective release liner on non-adhesive face, 6 pounds per cubic foot density, 1 inch wide x not less than 1/4 inch thick, self-

K. Zinc-Rich Paint: Conform to Fed Spec DOD-P-21035A, Z.R.C. "Cold Galvanizing Compound", manufactured by ZRC Products Company. Provide for touch-up of galvanized surfaces.

L. Steel Backing Plates: Provide a minimum 4 inch wide by l6 gage steel, or sections of studs and stud track welded or fastened to web of studs, except as otherwise indicated.

Apply shop coat of metal primer.

M. Anchorage Devices Powder Actuated: Minimum 0.177 inch diameter by 1-7/16 inch long fasteners in regular concrete and 0.145 inch diameter by 1-1/8 inch long fasteners in lightweight concrete. Allowable shear and tension values as permitted in ICBO Report No. 2388, 1639 or 1147, reduced to 80 percent.

N. Anchorage Devices, Drilled Expansion Anchors: Minimum 3/8 inch diameter with 2-1/4 inch embedment. Allowable shear and tension values as permitted in ICBO Report No.

1372, 2895 or 4627, reduced to 80 percent.

2.2 WALL TO WALL DRYWALL AND PLASTER SUSPENSION SYSTEMS (WWDPSS)

A. WWDPSS shall be as manufactured by USG (United States Gysum Company, USG Interiors), or equal, in compliance with applicable ASTM Standards.

B. OTHER Acceptable Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, available manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to , the following:

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 CONVENTIONAL SUPPORT INSTALLATION

A. Walls and Partitions: Install materials as recommended by the product manufacturer.

1. Fasten floor runners for exterior walls and interior partitions to concrete slab with required power driven fasteners. Spacing of fasteners not to exceed 24 inches on center. Fasten ceiling runners to structure as indicated on the drawings.

2. Sound insulated walls and partitions: Embed floor runner tracks in two beads of acoustical sealant or two runs of compressible tape seal. Install top track nested into slotted track system, in same manner for full height of walls. Where wall ends abutting concrete, masonry, or steel set end studs in two beads of acoustical sealant or two tape seals and secure at 4-foot centers vertically.

3. Space studs not over 16 inch on center unless indicated otherwise. Studs shall be located approximately 2 inches from door frame jambs, abutting partitions and partition corners, except those providing support for door and window openings.

4. Furnish and install manufacturer's standard floor track. Fasten track to floor by means of 1/4 inch x 1-1/4 inch Star "Dryvin" hammer drive anchors or 3/16 inch x 1 inch round head, "Rawl-Drives" one-piece expansion bolts spaced not to exceed 3 feet, and installed in drilled holes in slab, or to wood joist with nails as indicated. Track may be fastened to concrete floor slabs with, power-driven fasteners.

5. Studs shall be seated squarely in track with stud web and flanges abutting track web, plumbed and securely fastened with sheet metal screws, to flanges or web of both floor and top tracks. Provide 4 screws per stud.

6. Where there is no suspended ceiling, tops of stud walls shall be provided with track and shoes and be fastened as specified for floors. Welding of studs to ceiling track will not be permitted except where bearing studs are installed.

7. Over metal doorframes, install a cut-to-length section of runner track, with flanges slit and web-bent to allow flanges to overlap adjacent vertical studs, and securely fasten to studs. At doorjambs, extend studs continuous to structure above.

8. Bridging, or horizontal bracing of 1-1/2 inch, cold-rolled channels shall be fastened in a manner to prevent stud rotation. Bridging shall be furnished as follows: walls up to 10 feet high, one row at mid-height; walls exceeding 10 feet high, bridging or bracing rows spaced not to exceed 5 feet on center.

9. Wind bracing shall be fastened where indicated on Drawings. Minimum size of strap shall be as indicated on Drawings. Track where strap terminates shall be anchored as indicated on Drawings.

B. Gypsum Wallboard Ceiling Suspension and Framing: Suspended ceiling system framing shall be installed in accordance with ASTM C 754, and as follows.

1. Hangers shall be spaced not more than 48 inches along runner channels and 36 inches in other direction or 42 inches in both directions unless otherwise indicated. Locations of hanger wires shall be coordinated with other Work.

Hangers at ends of runner channels shall be located not more than 6 inches from walls. Hanger wire shall be fastened to structural elements with required fasteners. Sags or twists, which develop in suspended system, shall be adjusted.

Damaged or faulty parts shall be replaced.

2. Main Runners: Hanger wires shall be double strand saddle-tied to runner channels and ends of hanger wire shall be twisted three times around itself. Main runners shall be located to within 6 inches of parallel wall to support ends of cross furring. Main runners shall not come in contact with abutting masonry or concrete walls. Where main runners are spliced, ends shall be overlapped 12 inches with flanges of channels interlocked, and shall be securely tied at each end of splice with wire looped twice around channels.

3. Furring channels shall be fastened to runner channels and to structural supports at each crossing with tie wire, hairpin clips, or required fastenings. Furring channels shall be located within 2 inches of parallel walls and beams, and shall be cut 1/2 inch short of abutting walls.

4. Ceiling Openings: Support members shall be provided as required at ceiling openings for access panels, recessed light fixtures, and air supply or exhaust.

Support members shall be not less than 1-1/2 inch main runner channels and vertically installed suspension wires or straps shall be located to provide at least minimum support specified for furring and wallboard attachment. Intermediate structural members not a part of structural system, shall be provided for attachment or suspension of support members.

5. Light fixtures and air diffusers shall be supported directly from suspended ceiling runners. Wires shall be provided at required locations to support weight of recessed or surface mounted light fixtures and air diffusers.

6. Control Joints: Ceiling control joints for expansion and contraction shall be located where indicated on drawings. A control joint or intermediate blocking shall be installed where ceiling framing members change direction.

a. Interior Ceilings With Perimeter Relief: Control joints shall be installed so linear dimensions between control joints shall not exceed 50 feet in either direction or more than 2500 square feet in area.

b. Interior Ceilings Without Perimeter Relief: Control joints shall be installed so linear dimensions between control joints shall not exceed 30 feet in either direction nor more than 900 square feet in area.

C. Splay Wires and Compression Struts: Install as detailed and as required to prevent upward and sideward motion under seismic conditions, as required by code.

D. Suspension Under Ducts: For hangers spaced at 4 to 5-1/2 foot centers, provide 6 gage hanger wires with minimum 2 inch runner channels spaced at maximum 48 inch centers.

For greater spans, design system for live load of l0 pounds per square foot of area plus dead load and provide a detail in Shop Drawings.

E. Furring: Provide framing for horizontal furring as shown or required. Conform to above requirements as applicable.

3.2 WALL-TO-WALL INSTALLATION

A. Examine substrates and adjoining construction and conditions under which Work is to be installed. Do not proceed with Work until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.

B. Standard reference: Install grid members in accordance with ASTM C636, CISCA installation standards, and other applicable references.

C. Manufacturer’s reference: Install in accordance with manufacturer’s current printed recommendations.

D. Drawing reference: Install in accordance with approved shop drawings and locate ceiling in accordance with main tee dimensions relative to elevations.

E. Install in accordance with reference standards and manufacturer's instructions.

F. Corridor (Wall-to-Wall) Applications:

1. Hanger Wire Installation: Secure hanger wires to upper structural elements and space hangers so that each hanger wire supports a maximum of 16 sq. ft.

2. Space main tee members as required by span and deflection design load.

3. Install trim, and similar accessories as necessary and as applicable to meet project requirements where indicated on drawings.

4. Install Control Joints at locations of properly detailed control joints, including additional cross tees as necessary, per direction of architect and/or design professional.

5. Finish boards as described to achieve ‘Level of Finish’ specified.

C. 3/8-Inch Rib Lath: ASTM C 847, galvanized, 4-lb./sq. yd. weight.

2.2 ACCESSORIES

A. Comply with ASTM C 1063 and coordinate depth of accessories with thicknesses and number of plaster coats required:

2.3 PORTLAND CEMENT PLASTER

1. Color for Finish Coats: White.

D. Sand Aggregate: ASTM C 897.

E. Acrylic-Based Finish Coatings: Factory-mixed acrylic-emulsion coating systems, formulated with colorfast mineral pigments and fine aggregates; for use over portland cement plaster base coats. Include manufacturer's recommended primers and sealing topcoats for acrylic-based finishes.

2.4 PLASTER MIXES

A. Base-Coat Mix: equal parts portland cement and plastic cement; comply with

ASTM C 926.

B. Job-Mixed Finish Coat: equal parts portland cement and masonry cement or plastic cement; comply with ASTM C 926.

C. Factory-Prepared Finish-Coat Mixes: For ready-mixed finish-coat plasters or acrylic-based finish coatings; comply with manufacturer's written instructions.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION

A. Fire-Resistance-Rated Assemblies: Install components according to requirements for design designations from listing organization and publication indicated on Drawings.

B. Install metal lath and accessories according to ASTM C 1063.

1. Partition Framing and Vertical Furring: Install flat diamond-mesh or flat rib lath.

2. Flat-Ceiling and Horizontal Framing: Install flat diamond-mesh or flat rib lath.

3. Install lath-type, external-corner reinforcement at exterior locations.

4. Install cornerbead at interior and exterior locations.

C. Apply bonding compound on unit masonry and concrete plaster bases.

D. Apply, and cure plaster materials and finishes to comply with ASTM C 926. Apply three coats. Apply sand finish.
