SECTION 00 33 50 WEATHER, WATER STAGE AND TIDE DATA
SECTION 00 33 50 Page 1
1. The following water stage, wind, wave, and weather data are provided for inclusion in the subject project’s P&S. The following water level datums are provided for information only and are not for use in conjunction with any contract-related hydrographic surveying.
a) Water Stages. Water levels in the project area are mainly affected by wind and mixed tidal fluctuations in the Gulf of America (diurnal and semi-diurnal). The project area is subject to storm surge from tropical systems from June through November. Surge from extratropical storms may minimally affect the area any time of the year.
Elevations of tidal datums in the vicinity of the project area were gathered using the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Ocean Service (NOS) tide stations shown in Figure 1 and Tables 1 – 2. These data are referred to Mean Lower-Low Water (MLLW) from the tidal epoch period of 1983 – 2001. Additional tidal data on stations in the vicinity of the subject project area can be found at the following website: https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/stations.html?type=Datums#Florida.
The elevations in Table 1 were taken from NOAA’s Tide Station 8726607 (Old Port Tampa, FL) and are based on a controlling tide station near St. Petersburg, Florida (NOAA Tide Station 8726520). These datums are based on periodic analyses from January 1999 – December 2000, January 2003 – December 2003, December 2005 – November 2008, April 2010 – March 2011, and January 2012 – December 2016 from a Tampa Bay tide gauge roughly 5.0 miles north of Cut G. These values are applicable to dredging operations in the vicinity of Cut G within Tampa Harbor. Table 2 presents datums taken from NOAA’s Tide Station 8726674 (East Bay, FL) and are based on a controlling tide station near St. Petersburg, Florida (NOAA Tide Station 8726520). These elevations are based on a three-month analysis from October 2019
– December 2019 from a tide gauge roughly 1.6 miles east of the Upper Channels. These values are applicable to dredging operations in the vicinity of the Upper Channels within Tampa Harbor.

i. U.S. Coast Pilot Volume 5, Gulf of America, Puerto Rico, and Virgin Islands, U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Ocean Service is a publication that supplements the navigational information shown on NOAA’s NOS nautical charts and provides miscellaneous meteorological data. This publication is available through NOAA or at the following website: https://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/publications/coast-pilot/index.html.
ii. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Coastal & Hydraulics Laboratory, Wave Information Study (WIS) Database is a wave hindcast database for various stations located along the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf of America coastlines. WIS Station 73272 is in 5.0 meters-MSL (16.4 ft-MSL) of water at 27.50° N, 82.80° W. This station is located approximately 26 miles southwest of the Cut G and Gadsden Point Cut within Tampa Harbor. Available data includes a hindcast time series of wave height, wave spread, wave period, wave and wind direction, and wind speed at 1-hour intervals for the 44-year period of January 1980 – January 2024. The following website provides links to WIS summary tables and plots, as well as other sources of wave data: https://wisportal.erdc.dren.mil/.
iii. National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) Website provides a wide range of real-time and archived meteorological and oceanographic data collected at offshore and nearshore stations worldwide. Data provided on this website include wind speed, wind gusts, atmospheric pressure, air temperature, sea temperature, wave height, and wave period. Gauge readings are updated hourly, and archived data is available for most stations. The website address for data relevant to Florida projects is as follows:
https://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/.
c) Weather Conditions. The project area is subject to tropical systems June through November and to windy and rainy weather any time of the year. The climate of the area is essentially tropical, as temperatures below freezing are seldom. During the wet season (May through October), rainfall events are usually short and sporadic and closely associated with convective activity. Winter months generally constitute the dry season, where rainfall is typically associated with mid-latitude, or extratropical, systems and distributed in a more spatially uniform pattern. Daily rainfall events in the dry season are occasionally heavy when mid-latitude systems impact southwest Florida. Notably, hazardous thunderstorms can occur in this area at any time of the year.
It is the contractor's responsibility to obtain information concerning weather conditions in the project area.
The Climate Data Online website (https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cdo-web/) published by NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (formerly the National Climatic Data Center) in Asheville, North Carolina contains climatological and meteorological data relevant to this region. Available data includes quality-controlled daily, monthly, seasonal, and yearly measurements of temperature, precipitation, wind, and degree days as well as radar data and 15- to 30-year climate normals.
NOAA’s Climate Data Online website includes Monthly Normals (average values) for temperature, precipitation, and other climatological information over three periods: 1981-2010, 1991-2020, and 2006- 2020. NOAA’s Tampa International Airport, FL gauge (ID USW00012842) is closest to the project area and lies roughly 12.0 miles north of Cut G and 6.5 miles northwest of the Upper Channels at 27° 57.7' N, 82° 32.4' W. The most applicable period for data at this site is likely 1991-2020 and is found at the following website: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/maps/normals/.
