AMEND 0001

3.2.3 Dewatering

Control surface and ground water flowing toward or into excavations to prevent sloughing of excavation slopes and walls, boils, uplift and heave in the excavation and to eliminate interference with orderly progress of construction. Do not permit French drains, sumps, ditches or trenches within 3 feet of the foundation of any structure, except with specific written approval, and after specific contractual provisions for restoration of the foundation area have been made. Take control measures by the time the excavation reaches the water level in order to maintain the integrity of the in situ material. Jetting is prohibited for installation of the dewatering system.

Dewatering of the area enclosed between sheet piles for the retaining wall west of the new pump station and the embankment in accordance with paragraph "SITE FILL BELOW ELEVATION 837."

3.2.4 Trench Excavation

Excavate the trench as recommended by the pipe manufacturer. Excavate trenches to a stable condition in accordance with EM 385-1-1 requirements, the subsurface conditions in the excavation, and other applicable conditions. Properly slope, shore, or otherwise stabilize all trenches prior to entry by any personnel. Give special attention to slopes which may be adversely affected by weather or moisture content. Do not exceed the trench width below the pipe top of 48 inches plus pipe outside diameter.

Where recommended trench widths are exceeded, provide redesign, stronger pipe, or special installation procedures. The redesign, stronger pipe, or special installation procedures without any additional cost to the Government.

3.2.4.1 Bottom Preparation

Grade the bottoms of trenches accurately to provide uniform bearing and support for the bottom quadrant of each section of the pipe. Excavate bell holes to the necessary size at each joint or coupling to eliminate point bearing. Remove stones of 3 inches or greater in any dimension, or as recommended by the pipe manufacturer, whichever is smaller, to avoid point bearing.

3.2.4.2 Removal of Unyielding Material

Where unyielding material is encountered in the bottom of the trench, remove such material 9 inches below the required grade and replace with suitable materials in accordance with paragraph "BACKFILLING AND

COMPACTION."

3.2.4.3 Removal of Unstable Material

Where unstable material is encountered in the bottom of the trench, remove such material to the depth directed and replace to the proper grade with select granular material in accordance with paragraph "BACKFILLING AND COMPACTION." When removal of unstable material is required due to the Contractor's fault or neglect in performing the work, the Contractor is responsible for excavating the resulting material and replacing without additional cost to the Government.

Depths to top of the conduit to be not less than 24 inches below finished grade. Provide not less than 3 inches clearance from the conduit to each side of the trench. Grade bottom of trench smooth; where rock, soft spots, or sharp-edged materials are encountered, excavate the bottom for an additional 3 inches, fill and tamp level with original bottom with sand or earth free from particles, that would be retained on a 1/4 inch sieve. The first 6 inch layer of backfill cover to be sand compacted as previously specified. The rest of the excavation to be backfilled and compacted in 3 to 6 inch layers. Provide color, type and depth of warning tape as specified in Section 31 00 00 EARTHWORK.

3.3.4.1 Encasement Under Roads and Structures

Under roads and paved areas, install conduits in concrete encasement of rectangular cross-section providing a minimum of 3 inch concrete cover around ducts. Concrete encasement to extend at least 5 feet beyond the edges of paved areas and roads. Depths to top of the concrete envelope to be not less than 24 inches below finished grade.

3.3.5 Duct Encased in Concrete

Construct underground duct lines of individual conduits encased in concrete. Depths to top of the concrete envelope to be not less than 24 inches below finished grade. Do not mix different kinds of conduit in any one duct bank. Concrete encasement surrounding the bank to be rectangular in cross-section and to provide at least 3 inches of concrete cover for ducts. Separate conduits by a minimum concrete thickness of 3 inches.
