Methods and Materials

Treatments were placed on specific buildings during 2009, 20 I 0 and 2011. Weekly photo surveys were conducted beginning prior to time of arrival and during the 2011 breeding season to assess the effectiveness of each treatment. Detailed accounts of nesting structures, including location and stage of completion, were assembled and photo-documented. All nests were monitored.

In 2011, treatments were limited to Vinyl Sheet and Steel Sheeting for all buildings on Fort Wainwright. A total of 22 buildings were monitored during the 2011 season. Three treatments and their effectiveness were documented:

Azek vinyl sheet, "Vinyl method". White (W' 4x8) sheets cut to size and anchored using 1.5" galvanized tap-con screw or other suitable galvanized concrete anchor and set flush. Material was attached smooth side out installed as shown in figure 1.

Steel sheeting, "Flashing method". The sheeting consisted of 16 gauge (flashing) painted to match the building color. Installation and configuration are shown in figure 2.

No Treatment. Locations on each building that were left untreated were evaluated for the natural state of breeding activity. These locations ranged from loading areas, to overhangs, to vacant corners.

Results and Conclusions

Buildings 1001 & 1004 In 2009, the first floor of both buildings was treated with a variety of deterrents. Treatments were placed around windows. Also, only the northern (backside) of the buildings were treated. In 2011, two treatments were replaced with Vinyl and Flashing, and both buildings were treated in their entirety. Problematic areas, including loading areas were also treated in 2011.

While the majority of treated sections proved very effective in deterring nesting, the loading areas of 1001 & 1004 and front
