About this file

This is a Questions and Answers document for Solicitation W912CH-25-R-0139, addressing technical inquiries from contractors regarding the M225A1 60mm Firing Mechanism procurement. The Q&A contains one substantive question-answer exchange regarding the manufacturing specifications for part 12901961 (the handle assembly).

A contractor questioned whether Drawing 12901961 correctly specified an open die forging process, arguing that open die forging is unsuitable for complex geometries and suggesting a drawing correction or deviation was needed. The Government's response clarified that Engineering has confirmed the drawing requires no changes and that the specification allows for manufacturing flexibility. Specifically, the handle material may be produced using either aluminum hand die/open die forgings per SAE AMS4149 or plate 7050-T7451 per ASTM E1417/E1417M. The Government noted that hand forging is intended only to establish preliminary shape, with subsequent machining operations refining the handle to its complex final geometry, and emphasized that the plate material option remains available for complete milling operations if preferred. The Government invited further communication through Request for Variance (RFV) submissions if the contractor disagreed with this determination.

Solicitation Q&A

Question #Contractor QuestionGovernment Answer
1Need to request an engineering change on part 12901961. Part is calling for open die forging, this process is typically used for simple cylindrical parts (rings, shafts, etc). I think the spec on the drawing must have been changed & nobody realized what type of forging spec was being called out. If you would request TDP correction or deviation it would be much appreciated.Engineering has concluded that Drawing 12901961 does not require any changes or correction to the M225A1 60mm Firing Mechanism TDP. The contractor is encouraged to submit an RFV or reach out with further communications if they claim in contrary to this statement.

Note 2. on drawing 12901961 Handle gives two material options, Aluminum Hand Die / Open Die forgings 7175-T74 per SAE AMS4149 or plate 7050-T7451 ASTM E1417/E1417M. The option to use Aluminum hand die forging material is not enforcing the complete manufacture of 12901961 using this process. The initial forging would be used to define the preliminary shape before getting to the machining operations to refine the handle to its more complex specified geometry. Hand forgings materials would lend itself to a grain structure that change in relation to the cylindrical axis of each segment of the handle. There is still the given option to use Plate 7050-T7451, which is available in thick sections for complete milling operations
