PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 CONCRETE GROUT FOR STONE PROTECTION

All concrete grout placed below the waterline shall be tremmied in place.

3.1.1 Depositing Concrete Under Water

ACI 301 methods and equipment used shall prevent the washing of the cement from the mixture, minimize the formation of laitance, prevent the flow of water through the concrete before it has hardened, and minimize disturbance to the previously placed concrete. Tremies shall be watertight and sufficiently large to permit a free flow of concrete. Keep the discharge end continuously submerged in fresh concrete. Keep the shaft full of concrete to a level well above the water surface. Discharge and spread the concrete by raising the tremie to maintain a uniform flow. Place concrete without interruption until the top of the fresh concrete is at the required height.

3.2 DEMONSTRATION SECTION

The first 100 feet of Structure 1 shall be constructed as a test section to demonstrate the equipment, materials, workmanship and methods. The section shall demonstrate the grading, mattress and stone placing, and placing and curing of grout, within the tolerances specified. The methods and equipment shall demonstrate the adequacy for use in accomplishing the work within the requirements specified.

3.2.1 Demonstration Section Evaluation

Do not proceed with remaining construction of Structure 1 until Government approval of the demonstration section. Within a period of 7 days after completion of the section, the Contracting Officer will determine the adequacy of the section to function as part of the permanent construction.

The Contractor will be notified as to the acceptability of the demonstration section and may be directed to modify methods of construction and/or remove the section or portions thereof.

3.2.2 Removal of Demonstration Section

If removal of the demonstration section is required, it shall be conducted in such a manner as to maintain the integrity of the underlying subgrade.

Materials deemed unacceptable for reinstallation shall be disposed of off-site.

3.3 STAGING AND STOCKPILING STONE

See requirement for placing geotextile in stockpile areas in Section 01 50 00 TEMPORARY CONSTRUCTION. The Contractor may stage / stockpile stones on the existing groins at his own risk. The stability of these structures is unknown. If the groins are utilized for this purpose, pre-construction and post-construction survey cross-sections (coordinates and elevation) of the groins shall be taken every 25 feet along the length of the groins and in accordance with the standards for surveying specified in Section 01 32 10 SURVEY REQUIREMENTS.

Section 31 37 00 Page 10

3.4 EXISTING STONE

3.4.1 General

Rehandling of existing stone will be required to facilitate new stone placement. Existing capstones that are located on and adjacent to the jetty and groin, in addition to those that protrude into and interfere with the placement of the mattresses, shall be removed, weighed, sorted, and stockpiled for reuse prior to placing the mattresses. Existing stone meeting the weight and shape requirements for capstone, as specified herein, shall be reused as capstone. Existing stone, meeting the respective weight requirements for corestone or R-8 riprap, may be used as corestone or R-8 riprap, where indicated on the contract drawings.

Existing stone, not meeting the minimum weight requirements for corestone or R-8 riprap shall be disposed of offsite at no additional cost to the Government.

3.4.2 Weighing Existing Stone

Weigh all rehandled stone to to be reused as capstone or corestone, as it is being excavated, and segregate into stockpiles to ensure a particular stone meets the minimum weight required for a classification of stone.

3.4.3 Stockpile Management

Utilize a method for identifying the classification of existing stone in a particular stockpile. The method shall be clearly visible and understandable to the field personnel.

3.5 SUBGRADE PREPARATION

The surface underlying the ACB mattresses or SF marine mattresses shall be smooth and free of ruts or protrusions which could damage the geotextile.

Any irregularities shall be removed so as to ensure continuous, intimate, contact of the geotextile with all of the underlying surface. Any loose material, soft or low density pockets of material, shall be removed;

erosion features such as rills, gullies, etc., must be graded out of the surface before mattress placement.

3.6 EXCAVATION

Excavation shall be performed to the lines and grades indicated on the contract drawings. The Contractor shall not damage or undermine the stability of any existing structures encountered during his excavation operations. The excavated materials will be a mixture of sand and stone.

Unsatisfactory material uncovered shall be disposed of off-site. The remainder of satisfactory material shall be stockpiled and used as sand backfill behind Structure 2. The excavated material shall not be placed in locations where stone fill is being placed.

3.7 R-8 RIPRAP

Place R-8 riprap behind sheet pile and in the locations as indicated on the drawings.

3.8 BEDDING / MATTRESS STONE

Place AASHTO #1 stone in the locations as indicated on the drawings.

Section 31 37 00 Page 11

3.9 SAND FILL AND SAND BACKFILL

Place sand fill and sand backfill behind the sheet pile to choke R-8 stone.

3.10 CORESTONE

Place corestone in the locations as indicated on the drawings.

3.11 MATTRESS PLACEMENT

Place stone-filled (SF) marine mattresses or articulated concrete block (ACB) mattresses, as specified in Sections 31 34 10 STONE-FILLED (SF) MARINE MATTRESSES and 35 31 00 ARTICULATED CONCRETE BLOCK (ACB) MATTRESSES, respectively.

3.12 CONFIRMATION OF MATTRESSES' LOCATIONS

See Section 01 32 10 SURVEY REQUIREMENTS for the requirement for real-time confirmation of the placement location and elevation of the installed mattresses. Ensure the information is available immediately to the Contractor and the Government. The COR may require the approval of the location and elevation of each mattress prior to the Contractor commencing placement of the next mattress.

3.13 GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR PLACEMENT OF STONE

Place selected stones against the sheet pile wall in such a manner that the maximum amount of stone is in contact with the wall. Do not drop stones from a height greater than one foot in loading, transit, or placement on the structure. Place stones on the structure by feeling with the handling equipment to achieve contact when vision is obscured, i.e., below water, and then release.

Maintain all stone until accepted by the Government and any stone or other material displaced by any cause shall be replaced at no additional cost to the Government, to the lines and grades shown on the drawings.

3.14 PLACING CAPSTONE

Place capstone in one or two stone layers, as indicated on the contract drawings, and place over the underlayer stone to the final elevations, as shown on the drawings, and within the tolerances specified herein. The stones shall be closely fitted together and interlocked in a staggered pattern to prevent continuous joints in the seawall surface.
