Engineering Recommendations Provisions pertaining to design; based on previous design at Fort Carson are provided below. This preliminary design identifies soil conditions that the design build contractor must consider for proper foundation design.
Foundation Design The soils located on the project site are predominately composed of clay and shale; extending at least 25.0’ bgs. Swell tests performed indicate that the soil will heave. Swelling of expansive foundation soils should be considered during the preliminary design phase. The level of structural cracking that will be acceptable should be determined in accordance with ACI 224R-01. It is the Contractor’s responsibility to verify all laboratory test results. Typical foundations in this area of the installation contain both structures founded on conventional spread footings bearing on a layer of non-expansive engineered fill and those founded on drilled piers. It is the Contractor’s responsibility determine the specifics of the foundation system based on the available information and the information they will obtain during the final investigation.
Foundations shall be designed to limit the total settlement of any element not to exceed 1.0 inch and the differential settlement between any two adjacent elements shall not exceed 0.5 inches.
Utility Construction The addition of new utility lines requires either open trench or trenchless construction. For any open trench operations, 29 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 1926, Subpart P titled “Excavations” should be consulted to ensure adequate trench protection is in place. Contractors must also consider the shallow ground water table and create a dewatering plan suitable of keeping groundwater out of any open excavations for a period of time such all utilities may be installed.
Corrosion and Sulfate Risk Soil resistivity, conductivity, pH and sulfate tests were performed on four representative samples obtained from various depths across the project site.
Based on the results from resistivity testing; the soils on this site present a severe risk for corrosion potential. If steel pipes and or foundations are used, increased thickness of steel members or steel walled pipes must be considered to mitigate the risk of corrosive soil.
Sulfate attack is an issue that can be damaging to any concrete pavements. Sulfate ion content tests were performed on four representative samples from various depths across the project site and can be seen in table 2 above. According to the American Concrete Institution publication 201.2R a “Guide to Durable Concrete”, a “Very Severe” exposure classification to sulfate attack occurs when laboratory test results indicate that the Sulfate in Water (ppm) exceeds 10,000. For this project, native soils near the surface pose a very severe risk of sulfate attack.
Based on criteria outlined in ACI 201.2, a “severe” exposure condition is present, and sulfate-resistant cement will be required for concrete or grout in contact with soil and within 24 inches above final grade. Cement shall be:
