BRIDGE CRANE MECHANICAL AND STRUCTURAL REHABILITATION
PART 1 GENERAL
In these Specifications, the word 'provide' shall be understood to mean 'furnish and install' (applicable to materials, equipment, products, systems, etc. to be furnished and installed as part of the crane rehabilitation). Requirements applying to "new" equipment, including but not limited to product data submittals, design calculations, and drawings, shall be understood to also apply to modified and replaced-in-kind equipment.
1.1 DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This SECTION covers the mechanical and structural work for the rehabilitation of the two 250-ton powerhouse bridge cranes, modifications to access walkways, and two 250-ton lifting beams, and one 450 ton lifting beam at Oahe powerhouse. This section also covers the optional weld inspection and load testing of the lifting device for the shaft and runner.
The Contractor shall engineer and design all new, replacement, and modified systems and components of the cranes and submit computations and drawings as stated in paragraph SUBMITTALS below. 1.4 DESIGN CRITERIA
1.4.1 General
The design loads and speeds shall be based on the rated capacities and speeds specified in SECTION 41 01 20.71 26 BRIDGE CRANE DATA, TESTING AND TRAINING. For the purpose of design of structural and mechanical parts, loads resulting from the maximum torque of the motors shall be taken as 200 percent of the rated full load torque of the motors. Design loads shall be computed with each trolley in such position as will give maximum loading or stress in any part of the crane and with due allowance for eccentricity of application. If there are conflicts between design criteria listed here and listed in referenced documents, the most conservative approaches shall govern.
1.4.2 Dead Loads
The dead loads shall include the weight of the bridge, trolley, bridge drive mechanism, platforms, trucks, wheels, operator/equipment cab, electrical equipment, and miscellaneous attached parts. The dead load of the trolley shall include the weight of all machinery and attached equipment except the weight of the movable blocks (lower sheave blocks) and ropes included with the live load.
1.4.3 Live Loads
a. Hoist Loads. The live load on each hoist shall include the rated capacity plus the weight of movable blocks (lower sheave blocks) and rope. The rated hoist capacity includes the weight of the lifting beams.
b. Travel Loads. The live load on the main hoist for trolley travel operations shall include the weight of the blocks, ropes, and rated main hoist load. The live load on the bridge crane for travel operations shall be the live load on both main hoists for bridge operation.
1.4.4 Impact
Impact shall be taken as 10 percent of the live load.
1.4.5 Horizontal Forces
a. Bridge - The horizontal forces resulting from the acceleration or deceleration of the crane shall be taken as 10 percent of the sum of the dead load, the weight of the trolley, and the travel loads with the trolley in such position as will give maximum loading or stress due to moment or shear in any part of the bridge crane.
b. Trolley - The forces resulting from the acceleration or deceleration of a trolley shall be taken as 10 percent of the sum of the travel load and trolley weight applied at the top of the trolley rails with the trolley in such position as will give maximum loading or stress due to
SECTION 41 01 20.72 26 Page 10 moment or shear in any part of the bridge crane.
1.4.6 Collision Forces
Collision forces between bumpers and stops shall be taken as the forces produced by such collision with the crane or trolley traveling at full speed with the power off. The rate of deceleration shall be based on the calculated spring travel distance of the existing bumpers with the trolley located at the heaviest end of the bridge. Only the dead load shall be considered as contributing to the collision forces.
1.4.7 Unit Stresses
1.4.7.1 Beams, Girders, Columns, and Other Members Carrying Primary Loads
Allowable stress in structural parts (except bolts and welds) for the beams, girders, columns, and other members carrying primary loads are defined as the lesser of 45 percent of the yield or 75 percent of AISC 316 allowable stresses for ASTM A 36/A 36M or ASTM A 572/A 572M grade 50 steel.
Allowable stresses in all structural parts designed to meet fatigue provisions shall be designed to 100% of AISC 316 and AWS D1.1/D1.1M allowable stresses. Allowable stresses in structural parts not carrying primary loads shall be designed to 100% of AISC 316 allowable stresses.
1.4.7.2 Bolts
Allowable stresses in bolts shall be no more than 75 percent of AISC 316 allowable stresses. Allowable stresses in structural bolts not connecting members carrying primary loads shall be designed to 100% of AISC 316 allowable stresses.
1.4.7.3 Welds
Design of welded joints shall be in accordance with the applicable provisions of AWS D1.1/D1.1M, except that allowable stresses in welds shall be no more than 75 percent of AISC 316 allowable stresses. Allowable stresses in welds designed to meet fatigue provisions shall be designed to 100% of AISC 316 and AWS D1.1/D1.1M allowable stresses. Welds on parts subject to cyclic loads that are in stress categories D, E, or F as per AWS D1.1/D1.1M shall be labeled on the drawings. Allowable stresses in welds not connecting members carrying primary loads shall be designed to 100% of AISC 316 allowable stresses.
1.4.7.4 Detailing Requirements
The detailing of structural components and connections shall conform to the requirements of AISC 316.
1.4.7.5 Mechanical Parts of the Crane
Mechanical parts of the crane shall be designed for rated load, with a factor of safety of 5 based on the ultimate strength of the materials, provided that each part or component, including speed reducers but excluding wire rope, shall be proportioned to withstand the stresses produced by the maximum torque of the motors with resultant stresses not exceeding 75 percent of the yield point of the materials involved. See paragraph SHAFTING for design requirements for shafting and axles.
SECTION 41 01 20.72 26 Page 11
1.4.7.6 Stress Concentration Factors
Stress concentration factors shall be used where applicable, including but not being limited to changes in shaft sections and keyways.
1.4.7.7 Wire Rope Stresses
