1.4 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

1.4.1 General

This Section contains general requirements for piping, tubing, fittings, valves, and related components and systems. If requirements differ from specification Sections governing a specific item, the item specific requirement govern.

1.4.2 Performance Requirements

The pressure ratings and materials specified represent minimum acceptable standards for piping systems. The piping systems must be suitable for the services specified and intended. Each piping system must be coordinated to function as a unit. Flanges, valves, fittings and appurtenances must have a pressure rating no less than that required for the system in which they are installed. Pressure rating of new equipment must meet or exceed the rating of the equipment being replaced.

1.5 MODULATION VALVE SYSTEM DESIGN

a. The Contractor is responsible for the selection of the modulation valve size for the generator air cooling water system and thrust bearing cooling water system. Contactor will work with the valve manufacture to select proper valve size. Submit Throttling Valve Design package to include valve pressure drop and flow coefficient CV calculations. Select valve size that allows greatest flow control accuracy. Select valve size that ensures no valve cavitation.

b. Design parameters: While operating the generator air coolers are to maintain stator temperature. The thrust bearing system is to maintain oil temperature within the thrust tub. For system temperature and flow set points see Drawing E-604. The thrust bearing and generator cooling modulation valves will be located at approximately El. 176 on the discharge of each cooling system. Cooling water is fed from the intake pool spiral case and provides the head pressure for flow. The intake pool elevation has a range between a maximum and minimum of EL. 268 to El. 257. Maximum flow for the thrust bearing cooling water is 250 gpm at the 3 inch diameter pipe inlet. Maximum flow for the generator air coolers is 1500 gpm at the 8 inch diameter pipe header inlet. Minimum required flow is 0 gpm. Cooling water temperature ranges seasonally from 36 to 72 degrees F.

1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

a. Materials delivered and placed in storage must be stored with protection from the weather, excessive humidity variation, excessive temperature variation, dirt, dust and other contaminants. Proper protection and care of material before, during and after installation is the Contractor's responsibility. Any material found to be damaged must be replaced at the Contractor's expense. During installation, piping must be capped to keep out dirt and other foreign matter.

b. A material safety data sheet in conformance with 29 CFR 1910 Section 1200(g) must accompany each chemical delivered for use in pipe installation. At a minimum, this includes all solvents, solvent cements, glues and other materials that may contain hazardous compounds. Handling must be in accordance with ASTM F402. Storage
