The work covered in this section consists of furnishing all material, equipment and labor for the seeding of grass and installation of erosion control material for long-term soil stability. This specification addresses the work required to provide grass seed on all newly worked, damaged, bare and disturbed soil within the project limits of work. It is the intent of this specification to protect all exposed soil with mature grass. Where establishing grass is not possible, or is not achieved, provide long-term sediment and erosion control materials.

Provide long-term erosion control measures and materials to ensure soil does not erode during inclement weather and migrate during grass establishment. Provide soil protection for a period of time from Contract award until grass is established. If grass is not established by 1 October, provide erosion and sediment control materials until grass has successfully established. In addition to the temporary storm water pollution control measures required in specification Section 01 57 23 TEMPORARY STORM WATER POLLUTION CONTROL, provide long-term protection using grass seeding and erosion and sediment control measures and materials.

- On 4:1 gradients: 25 feet o.c.

- On 6:1 gradients: 40 feet o.c.

- On 10:1 gradients: 60 feet o.c.

- On 20:1 gradients: 100 feet o.c.

3.2 LAYOUT

Define the boundaries and location of all areas which require grass seeding, as per specifications and drawings.

3.3 SOIL PREPARATION

Till soil to a depth of four to six inches. Rake to remove any rocks and obstructions that prohibits the application of seed, straw wattles or RECPs from coming in direct continuous contact with the soil surface. Perform finish grading to ensure the designated areas and slopes are configured as per grades and drawings. Spray the proposed seeding area with a contact herbicide at least two weeks prior to seeding. Roll lightly, but do not compact to more than 85 percent density. Immediately prior to seeding, rake lightly to break up the upper crust so that the seeds have an excellent chance to bond with the soil.

For all levee slope areas and slopes where seed may be washed off, vertically track-walk the finished grade with a tracked bulldozer; forming horizontal troughs and ridges that are perpendicular to the water flow line and are capable of trapping seed and water.

SECTION 32 92 33 Page 12

3.4 TRENCHING

Where straw wattles are to be placed, dig a 3 inch deep trench sized to insure the wattles are in continuous contact with the soil along its entire length. Where RECP and TRMs are to be placed, trench all upper, lower and side edges as per manufacturer's recommendations.

3.5 SEEDING AND MULCHING

Seed all designated, bare and disturbed soil with grass seed after soil preparation and trenching have been performed and prior to placement of RECP, straw wattles, fiber rolls, TRMs, 3-D monofilament matrixes, or other erosion or sediment control materials. Prior to seeding, rework any previously prepared seedbed areas compacted or damaged by interim rain, traffic or other cause, to restore the ground for optimum seedbed conditions.

3.5.1 Seed Application Method

Seed all areas that have a 3H:1V or less slope using the drill seeding method. Seed areas that have a greater than 3H:1V slope using the hydroseeding method. Broadcast seed in areas that cannot be effectively drill seeded or hydroseeded. Upon arrival at the site, and prior to seeding, provide the Contracting Officer with receipts of the seed purchased and delivered to the site. Provide name of company on the receipts from which the seed was purchased, seed species, composition, quantity, germination rate, and pure-live-seed in pounds.

3.5.1.1 Hydroseeding with Wood Fiber Mulch

Hydroseed seed species by thoroughly mixing to ensure a seeding rate as specified under paragraph SEED SPECIES AND SEEDING RATES. Add wood fiber mulch to the mixture after the water and other mixture components have been thoroughly provided and mixed to produce a homogeneous slurry. Provide slurry with proper consistency to adhere to the earth slopes without lumping or running. The maximum time period for the seed to be held in the slurry is 24 hours. Uniformly apply slurry under pressure over the entire designated area. Do not roll the hydroseeded area.

When hydroseeding slopes, apply the seed from both above and below the slopes to ensure 100 percent of the soil surface has been seeded. Employ the following two-step process when hydroseeding:

Step 1: Apply the first step as a complete mixture, 1/2 of the mixture from one direction and the second half from the opposite direction, as indicated below:

- Wood Fiber Mulch, at a rate of 500 lbs per acre

- Seed Mix, as specified for species and seeding rate

- Do not apply fertilizer

Step 2: Apply the second step from two directions, at least 90 degrees from the first half. Apply as a complete mixture as indicated below:

- Wood Fiber Mulch, apply at a rate of 1,500 lbs per acre in this second step process.

- Tackifier, at a rate of 100 lbs per acre.

3.5.1.2 Broadcast Seeding

Broadcast seed uniformly using mechanical broadcast seeders at the rate as

SECTION 32 92 33 Page 13 specified under paragraph SEED SPECIES AND SEEDING RATES. Broadcast half of seed in one direction, and the remainder at right angles to the first direction. Cover seed to an average depth of 1/4 inch by harrowing with steel mat or chain drag, cultipacker, or other approved device. For slopes steeper than 2H:1V or inaccessible areas, hand broadcasting may be required and harrow or hand raking where practical.

Broadcast at the following rates:

- Seed mix as specified for species and seeding rate

- Do not apply fertilizer

3.5.1.3 Drill Seeding

Drill seed uniformly to a maximum 1/2 inch depth, using equipment having drills or disks spaced a maximum 7 inches apart. Use row markers with the drill seeder. Maintain the drilling equipment with half full seed boxes during the seeding operations. Adjust and calibrate equipment to manufacturer's specifications at the job site prior to seeding, and field test equipment in the presence of the Contracting Officer.

Drill seed at the seeding rate indicated in Table A1 - Grass Seed Mixture.

Do not apply fertilizer.

3.5.2 Applying Straw Mulch

Apply straw mulch over all broadcast-applied and drill seeded areas upon completion and approval by the Contracting Officer of the seeding application. Straw mulch is not required on those slopes that have been hydroseeded with wood fiber or are installed with RECP or open woven fabrics.

Spread mulch by hand, blower type mulch spreader or other approved method.

Start mulching on the windward side of relatively flat areas or on the upper part of a steep slope and continued uniformly until the area is covered. Apply the mulch loose and not bunched. Spread mulch evenly so that it completely covers the soil, with no visual soil being seen. Mulch all seeded areas within 48 hours of seeding.

Apply straw mulch at the following application rates:

- Apply straw mulch at 2,000 lbs per acre on drill or broadcast seeded surfaces.

- Apply straw mulch at 1,000 lbs per acre on all hydroseeded areas.

3.5.3 Applying Tackifier

For hydroseeded areas, tackify straw mulch with a commercially available dyed organic tackifier. Apply at a rate of 100 pounds per acre.

3.5.3.1 Crimping or Punching Straw

As a substitute for tackifying, mechanically crimp or punch all straw mulch areas into soil.

3.5.4 Hydroseeding with Bonded Fiber Matrix

Apply the Bonded Fiber Matrix (BFM) to all areas that are greater than a 1:4 slope that have erosive soils and where seeding with wood fiber mulch, straw mulch, or RECP cannot be successfully installed. Provide the BFM by a

SECTION 32 92 33 Page 14

Contractor certified by the manufacturer to be trained in the proper procedures for mixing and application of the product.

Mix the BFM according to the manufacturer's recommendations and demonstrate "free liquid" test to the Contracting Officer upon request. Spray-apply Bonded Fiber Matrix utilizing standard hydraulically seeding equipment in successive layers as to achieve 100 percent coverage of all exposed soil.

Do not apply the BFM immediately before, during or after rainfall, such that the matrix will have opportunity to dry for up to 24 hours after installation.

Employ the following one-step hydroseeding process when using BFMs. Apply as a complete mixture as indicated below:

Hydroseed application Rate: Add 30-50 pound of BFM fiber per 100 gallons of water when hydroseeding; confirm loading rates with equipment manufacturer.

a. 4 and 3 to 1 Slope: 3000 pounds per acre.

b. 2 to 1 slope: 3500 pounds per acre

c. Greater than 1 to 1 Slope: 4000 pounds per acre

3.6 INSTALLING STRAW WATTLES AND COIR ROLLS

After all soil treatment has been installed, including: seeding, straw mulch, erosion control blankets, fabric, TRMs or BFMs; place and secure straw wattles in pre-dug trenches. Extend the straw wattles continuously across the treatment area and provide continuous contact with the soil surface along its entire length. Place the straw wattle so that it is on contour along its entire length and anchored using wooden stakes spaced along its length at 48 inch intervals, maximum, and within 12 inches of both ends. Tightly overlap the ends of wattles by 24 inches. Abutting the wattles ends to each other is not acceptable.

Place straw wattles along the top of each slope where water congregates and flows as a point source over the slope below. Redirect and diffuse all above slope water flows so that it does not flow over the slope as a point-source or concentrated flow. Do place wattles or coir rolls on repair levee slopes. Place and space straw wattles according to paragraph

APPLICATIONS.

Where coir rolls are required, follow all trenching, overlapping and staking as per straw wattle requirement.

3.7 INSTALLING ROLLED EROSION CONTROL PRODUCTS

On slopes, place RECP by unrolling down slope. Anchor the terminal ends of the material in a 6 inch x 6 inch deep trench; backfill and compact.

Overlap side edges by 3 inches. Anchor edges down the entire length of material with staples using a 12 inch interval. Ensure "uphill" end of the overlap is placed over the "downhill" end. At the top and bottom of each overlap, use a double row spaced 6 inches apart, with staples spaced at 6 inch intervals along each row to secure overlaps.

In canals and ditches place RECP by unrolling at top of canal in the direction of flow along bottom centerline of canal. Do place RECP in irrigation ditches. Ensure "uphill" end of the overlap is placed over the "downhill" end. At the top and bottom of each overlap, use a double row of staples spaced 6 inches apart, with staples spaced at 6 inch intervals, to secure overlaps. Overlap side edges by 3 inches. Anchor the terminal end

SECTION 32 92 33 Page 15 of the material in a 6 inch square deep trench; backfill and compact.

Place subsequent material end over end with a 6 inch overlap. Anchor edges down the entire length of material with staples using a 12 inch interval.

Anchor material edges as indicated above. In addition to the end and edge staples, anchor the entire material surface to the soil using staples applied in an off-set pattern as recommended by the manufacturer. Where the requirements herein conflict with specification Section 01 57 23 TEMPORARY STORM WATER POLLUTION CONTROL, provide the more stringent requirement.

3.8 INSTALLING CHECK DAMS

In ditches and canals, provide 12 inch diameter coir fiber roll check dams completely across ditch or canal and perpendicular to water flows. Extend fiber roll ends up the side slopes a minimum of 24 inches above the canal/ditch expected flow line. Anchor rolls using 24 inch long wooden stakes within 12 inches of both ends and spaced continuously at 24 inches on center, maximum, along its entire length and at all grade breaks. Set fiber rolls into a pre-dug 3 inch deep trench, and ensure contact with the soil along its entire length. Place and space check dams according to paragraph APPLICATIONS.

3.9 REPAIRING OF DAMAGED OR UNSUCCESSFUL GRASS STANDS

For the duration of the Contract perform active grass maintenance that will give the grass seed the best opportunity to persist and mature. In those areas that are without active construction activities, or that have reels, ruts, gullies, or have not met the performance standards; re-grade, repair, and reseed within 5 working days of discovery. Maintain and protect it for the duration of the Contract. See paragraph PERFORMANCE STANDARDS.

Protect the newly seeded areas as per the requirements indicated herein and as per specification Section 01 57 23 TEMPORARY STORM WATER POLLUTION CONTROL, whichever is more stringent. Also provide BMPs where it is observed where water concentrates and flows over slopes causing erosion.

The project will not be accepted without the performance standards being met.

3.10 ESTABLISHMENT

3.10.1 Grass Establishment Period

Provide proper care of the seeded areas until all of the following are met:

the desired stand of grass is established and it has achieved the performance standards indicated herein, until it has met and received a notice of termination from the State Water Quality Board, and a written acceptance is issued by the Contracting Officer. Make regular repairs through the duration of the Contract so that the grass seed has an opportunity to mature and establish before the end of the Contract. The desired stand of vegetation is defined herein in paragraph PERFORMANCE

STANDARDS.

3.10.2 Protection

Protect areas susceptible to vehicular or heavy foot traffic by erecting suitable barricades immediately after seeding is completed and/or by placing warning signs of a type approved by the Contracting Officer.

SECTION 32 92 33 Page 16

3.11 CLEANUP

Remove and dispose of excess and waste erosion control material off-site in accordance with State and local agency codes and regulations.
