SECTION 01 11 00

SUMMARY OF WORK

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 WORK COVERED BY CONTRACT DOCUMENTS

1.1.1 Project Description

The 151 foot "window" at Site R7, from stations 397+11 to 398+62, is proposed to be closed with approximately 276 lineal feet of cutoff wall using the jet grout method along the waterside slope of the levee. The closure wall would consist of a series of overlapping grout columns that would have a depth ranging from approximately 53 feet to 67 feet. The resulting nominal thickness of the jet grouted wall will be 3 feet. The proposed cutoff wall will extend 15 feet beyond the existing cutoff wall.

It will then turn 90 degrees and run down the waterside slope of the levee. Then turn 90 degrees again and under the bridge. After it clears the bridge, the cutoff wall will turn and run up the waterside slope of the levee. It will then turn and run along the crown of the levee until it extends 15 feet beyond the existing cutoff wall.

The existing clearance under the H Street Bridge, at the proposed cutoff wall location, at site R7 is approximately 7.7 feet to 8.7 feet. The existing clearance under the H Street Bridge, at the proposed cutoff wall location along the bike path, at site L7 is approximately 8.6 feet to 9.3 feet. Excavation is required under the bridge at the R7 and L7 sites to install the 5 foot thick clay blanket mentioned above and to provide clearance for the jet grouting operation. The proposed cutoff wall shall be constructed with a minimum 2 feet embedment into the waterside blanket.

The contractor shall provide 12 feet of clearance under the bridge for construction operations. In order to provide the proper clearance at R7, approximately 10 feet of soil will need to be excavated around the adjacent pile by the contractor. The contractor shall get approval from the USACE representative if additional clearance is required.

The design of the proposed waterside cutoff wall at Site L7 will be similar, whereby the 329 foot "window", from stations 337+01 to 340+30, will be closed with approximately 397 linear feet of cutoff wall using the jet grout method along the waterside slope of the levee. The depth of the overlapping grout columns will range from approximately 64 feet to 78 feet, with the same nominal thickness of 3 feet. During construction of the existing cutoff wall, the contractor may encounter cobbles and pieces of concrete and construction debris on the north side. The proposed cutoff wall will extend 15 feet beyond the existing cutoff wall on the north side of the bridge, running along the crown of the levee approximately 138 feet. Then the cutoff wall will turn and run down the waterside slope of the levee to the pedestrian path, continuing along the path under the bridge. After it clears the bridge, the cutoff wall will turn and run up the waterside slope of the levee. It will then turn and run along the crown of the levee until it extends 15 feet beyond the existing cutoff wall.

The existing left bank (west) levee of the American River at Site L7 is approximately 12 feet in height (as measured from the landside toe) with a

01 11 00 - 2 crown width of approximately 18 to 20 feet in the levee section. There is an asphalt pedestrian path on the levee crown on both sides of the H Street Bridge. There are unpaved dirt ramps on both sides of the bridge connecting the levee crown to an asphalt pedestrian path on the waterside of the levee, and an asphalt ramp down to a path on the landside that runs parallel to H Street. The waterside and landside slopes are both approximately 2.5:1 (H:V).

There is a 12" steel water pipe and an abandoned 14" steel pipe suspended from the bottom of the H Street Bridge at Site L7. There are also overhead electric lines and power poles. At Site L7, there is an underground 66" steel storm drain pipe that connects to a vault on the waterside slope of the levee, just south of the H Street Bridge. This active storm drain pipe will be encased in controlled low strength material (CLSM) where the pipe crosses the proposed levee improvements.

1.1.2 Location

The work shall be located at the American River right bank (east) levee, between stations 396+83 and 398+67, for Site R7, and at the American River left bank (west) levee, between stations 336+86 and 340+45 for Site L7.

The exact location will be as indicated in the drawings.

1.1.3 Jet Grout Test Section

A jet grout test section will be installed in the alignment of the cutoff wall as indicated in the drawings.

1.2 EXISTING WORK

In addition to "FAR 52.236-9, Protection of Existing Vegetation, Structures, Equipment, Utilities, and Improvements":

a. Remove or alter existing work in such a manner as to prevent injury or damage to any portions of the existing work which remain.

b. Repair or replace portions of existing work which have been altered or damaged during construction operations to match existing or adjoining work, as approved by the Contracting Officer. At the completion of operations, existing work shall be in a condition equal to or better than that which existed before new work started all at Contractor's sole expense.

1.3 LOCATION OF UNDERGROUND FACILITIES

Contractor will be responsible for contacting and coordinating the utility providers 10 days prior to the start of construction. Standard potholing hand dig method would be used to locate the deep utilities in order to avoid damage to the pipes during construction.

1.3.1 Notification Prior to Excavation

Notify the Contracting Officer at least 48 hours prior to starting excavation work. Contact Underground Service Alert at 800-642-2444 48-hours prior to excavating Contractor is responsible for marking and preserving all utilities not marked by Underground Service Alert.

Contractor shall also renew as needed and keep active the USA ticket throughout the life of construction contract.

01 11 00 - 3

1.4 LOCATION OF OVERHEAD ELECTRICAL FACILITIES

Contractor shall be responsible for contracting and coordinating with utility providers 10 days prior to start of construction. All existing overhead power lines have been surveyed and are greater than 30 feet above the top of the levee. Contractor shall take extra caution while working under these power lines.
