and polyurea shall be manufactured specifically for the application of these products. The equipment shall be airless, capable of maintaining a 1:1 volume ratio and have primary and hose heaters. The equipment for the application of the acrylic elastomeric shall be an airless type as recommended by the coating manufacturer.

3.0 SURFACE PREPARATION

3.1 Surface Condition: The surface shall be free from

solvent, grease, dust, sediment, dirt, and sticky mastic. All existing rock roofs shall have loose, non-embedded gravel thoroughly removed and cleaned by vacuum, power broom vacuum methods. All extraneous equipment and equipment supports shall be removed from the deck. The existing roofing system shall be power washed as necessary and inspected by the manufacturer’s representative prior to the installation of any primer or new roofing materials.

3.2 All roof mounted equipment such as air conditioning

units, exhaust fans, etc. shall have sufficient clearance beneath them to allow for the proper application of the new roofing system. In the event of insufficient clearance, new curbs shall be constructed of the correct height and size to allow for the proper application of the new roofing system.

The new curbs shall be fitted with a 24 gauge galvanized sheet metal cover with a minimum of a 2 inch 60 degree perimeter flange to counter flash the foam.

3.3 All equipment or areas not intended to receive foam or

coating shall be masked and protected from overspray.

3.4 New 24-gauge galvanized interlocking sheet metal shall

be installed at all perimeter roof edges with a 1-inch rise foam stop and a 4-inch face with a ½-inch hem.

3.5 Install new 24-gauge galvanized sheet metal flashing

where the foam cannot be tapered and terminated properly at all air conditioning units, wall flashings, curbs, etc as necessary.

4.0 APPLICATION OF URETHANE FOAM

4.1 Environmental Conditions

4.1.1 Wind Velocity shall not exceed 12 miles per hour.

4.1.2 Application of spray foam shall not proceed

if ambient temperature is less than 40 deg. F, or if the substrate temperature is less than 50 deg.

F.

4.1.3 Spray foam is not to be applied over moist

substrates or where rain or inclement weather is imminent.

4.1.4 The construction of enclosures and wind

screens will be mandatory to prevent the release of over spray from damaging aircraft, equipment, vehicles, etc.

4.2 Spray Application

4.2.1 The polyurethane foam shall be applied in

minimum ½-inch passes to achieve a thickness of 1-inch.

4.2.2 Only as much area as can be brought to final

thickness should be attempted in a day. Phasing of the foam is strictly forbidden. (Phasing is foam application on one day and coming back the next day or thereafter and applying another layer of foam. This procedure often leads to the development of blisters.) If additional foam must be added after the 24 hour period, the existing foam must be primed and a minimum ½-inch of foam in a single pass can be applied.

4.2.3 The foam shall be free from bumps, pinholes

and ridges. The surface shall exhibit a smooth or orange peel surface texture. Popcorn or tree bark surfaces shall be deemed unacceptable.

4.2.4 The foam thickness shall be checked every

500 square feet prior to coating application.

4.2.5 The polyurethane foam shall be applied in

such a manner to provide for a positive slope to drain.

4.2.6 The Contractor shall maintain a laser level

on the jobsite at all times. The newly applied polyurethane foam shall be surveyed with a laser level to ensure proper slope to drain and absence of ponding.

5.0 APPLICATION OF FLUID APPLIED PROTECTIVE COATING

5.1 General: Sprayed polyurethane foam must be protected

from ultraviolet light in order to avoid degradation of the polymer. Coating also protects the foam from ponding water and adverse weather conditions.

Coatings must be specifically formulated for use over urethane foams.

5.2 Base Coat Application: Ultra-Tuff 2800 polyurea shall

be uniformly applied to the polyurethane foam in one or more uniform passes to achieve a total dry film thickness of 45 mils.

5.3 Aliphatic Top Coating: The base coat must be top

coated with aliphatic urethane coating within a maximum of 24 hours after the base coat membrane application. The Ultra-Shield 3000 aliphatic urethane surfacing shall be applied at the rate of 1½ gallons per square to achieve a total dry film thickness of 15 mils. Foot traffic should not be allowed on the newly installed aliphatic urethane surfacing until it has been allowed to cure for a minimum of 36 hours.

6.0 WARRANTY AND CERTIFICATION

The foam and coating manufacturer shall issue a fifteen year non-depreciating manufacturer's warranty.

7.0 INSPECTION

A representative from the coating manufacturer shall inspect the roof after completion to assure that the detail work at the protrusions, drains, parapets and edges has been completed in conformance with good practice. The inspector shall also check the thickness of the coating with an optical comparator.

7.0 CLEAN UP

Upon completion of all work covered in this specification, the contractor shall remove all equipment, material and debris, leaving the area in an undamaged and acceptable condition.
