About this file

This document is a specification section outlining special project procedures for the replacement of mechanical drive systems for four tainter valves at the MacArthur Lock. Key details include:

  • The project will replace strut assemblies, strut arms, shafts, gears, reducers, stuffing boxes and associated components for the four filling and emptying tainter valves. Some electrical upgrades may also be included. Large gears will be manufactured in sections due to space constraints.

  • Work is only permitted during one winter shutdown season from December 22, 2021 through the contractor's departure by April 7, 2022. Verification testing will occur from December 1-15, 2021 and commissioning after April 15, 2022.

  • The contractor must coordinate all transport via the lock bridge or footbridge when the bridge is unavailable. Equipment crossings require approved load plans. Access to the worksite and storage areas is defined.

  • Progress photo requirements specify photo types and quantities at pre-work, construction, and completion stages for documentation.

  • Coordination is required with other contractors who may be working in the area.
