1.4 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION AND REQUIREMENTS

1.4.1 Background Information

The Control Tower is of reinforced concrete construction with brick veneer and steel windows and doors. The existing exterior insulation and finish system was applied in 1983 and covers the brick veneer above approximately elevation 1195. The manufacturer of the system is not known, but it was specified to be similar and equal to "Dryvit Quartzputz". The following information is furnished from the specifications for the 1983 EIFS installation:

a. Crack Repairs - There were a large number of cracks in the masonry

SECTION 07 24 00 Page 4 of the Control Tower which were primed and caulked prior to installation of the EIFS. Deteriorated masonry joints and larger cracks were routed out and backup rods shall be used.

b. System Installed - A three inch thick layer of insulation board was installed on all vertical walls from elevation 1194.6 + to the top of the parapet walls and was returned over the top of the parapet walls and on the inside of the parapet. Masonry projections, such as brick dentals and projecting bricks bricks (one inch projection) were covered by routing the back of the insulation or using thinner pieces of insulation to maintain a smooth outside surface for the EIFS. Masonry projections greater than one inch thick received a full three inches of insulation and the final wall configuration was parallel the original wall surface. Stone ornaments (shields) on each side of the Control Tower and the six stone blocks on the exterior walls (Reference Drawing 038e-U1-41/3.5, Typical End Elevation) were covered with a minimum of three inches of insulation and the exterior synthetic plaster system.

c. Window Treatment - The top row of windows located on the upstream and downstream sides of the Control Tower from elevation 1209.4+ to elevation 1216+ were removed (Reference Drawings 038e-U1-41/3.5, Upstream Elevation and 038e-U1-41/5.3 Large Window Detail). The 12 gage pressed metal frame along the top of the 6 inch x 6 inch H beam (horizontal framing member) was also removed. The 6 inch x 6 inch H beam (horizontal framing member) remained in place and were used as a support for framing in the area from which the upper windows were removed. The lower windows located from elevation 1200.0+ to elevation 1209.3+ and the four small windows located on the upstream and downstream face have been replaced with thermopane windows. The thickness of the insulation around the window jambs, header and sills is assumed to be approximately one inch thick to accommodate the replacement window installation.

d. Lettering - The cast aluminum lettering was removed, cleaned, and remounted on the new EIFS.

e. Reinforcing Mesh - Heavy reinforcing mesh was installed five feet high at areas adjacent to the service bridge on the downstream side of the Control Tower and adjacent to the concrete balcony on the upstream side of the Control Tower. In addition to the above areas, all final window openings were reinforced an additional layer of reinforcing mesh at each of the corners, where possible, to prevent cracking of the exterior synthetic plaster system at the corners.
