4.7 EXTERIOR

4.7 Replace Window Seals on Bldgs. 001, 004, 005, 334

4.7.1 Do not install sealants when ambient temperature is less than 40 degrees F during and 48 hours after installation. Provide a sealant compatible with the material(s) to which it is applied. Do not use a sealant that has exceeded shelf life or has jelled and cannot be discharged in a continuous flow from the gun. Apply the sealant in accordance with the manufacturer's printed instructions with a gun having a nozzle that fits the joint width. Force sealant into joints to fill the joints solidly without air pockets. Tool sealant after application to ensure adhesion. Make sealant uniformly smooth and free of wrinkles. Upon completion of sealant application, roughen partially filled or unfilled joints, apply sealant, and tool smooth as specified. Apply sealer over the sealant when and as specified by the sealant manufacturer.

4.7.2 For Aluminum Surfaces, remove temporary protective coatings from surfaces that will be in contact with sealant. When masking tape is used as a protective coating, remove tape and any residual adhesive just prior to sealant application. For removing protective coatings and final cleaning, use non-staining solvents recommended by the manufacturer of the item(s) containing aluminum or bronze surfaces.

4.7.3 For concrete and masonry surfaces, where surfaces have been treated with curing compounds, oil, or other such materials, remove materials by sandblasting or wire brushing. Remove laitance, efflorescence and loose mortar from the joint cavity.

4.7.4 Install integral joint sealers around exterior windows. Joints and recesses formed where frames and sub-sills of windows, and vents that clear at interior adjoin masonry, concrete, wood framing, and exterior siding.

Use sealant at exterior wall penetrations.

4.7.5 Do not add liquids, solvents, or powders to the sealant. Mix multicomponent elastomeric sealants in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

4.7.6 Place masking tape on the finish surface on one or both sides of a joint cavity to protect adjacent finish surfaces from primer or sealant smears. Remove masking tape within 10 minutes after joint has been filled and tooled.

http://www.americanstandard-us.com/urinals/Washbrook-1-0-GPF-Urinal-with-Manual-Flush-Valve-4903/ http://www.americanstandard-us.com/urinals/Washbrook-1-0-GPF-Urinal-with-Manual-Flush-Valve-4903/

4.7.7 Immediately prior to application of the sealant, clean out loose particles from joints. Where recommended by sealant manufacturer, apply primer to joints in wood, and other porous surfaces in accordance with sealant manufacturer's instructions. Do not apply primer to exposed finish surfaces.

4.7.8 Joint Width-To-Depth Ratios: Acceptable Ratios: Minimum Maximum For metal, glass, or other nonporous surfaces: 1/4 inch (minimum) 1/4 inch 1/4 inch over 1/4 inch 1/2 of Equal to width. For wood, concrete, masonry, or stone: 1/4 inch (minimum) 1/4 inch 1/4 inch Over 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch 1/4 inch Equal to width Over 1/2 inch to 2 inch 1/2 inch 5/8 inch Over 2 inch. (As recommended by sealant manufacturer)

4.7.9 Install backstops dry and free of tears or holes. Tightly pack the back or bottom of joint cavities with backstop material to provide a joint of the depth specified. Install backstops where joint cavities exceed the acceptable maximum depths specified in paragraph entitled, "Joint Width-to-Depth Ratios".

4.7.10 Upon completion of sealant application, remove remaining smears and stains and leave the work in a clean and neat condition. For masonry and other porous surfaces immediately scrape off fresh sealant that has been smeared on masonry and rub clean with a solvent as recommended by the sealant manufacturer. Allow excess sealant to cure for 24 hour then remove by wire brushing or sanding. For metal and other non-porous surfaces, remove excess sealant with a solvent-moistened cloth.

4.8 Bldg. #004 POV Lot, OMS and AMSA Asphalt Repair: The Contractor shall install Type II Roadway

Slurry Seal, Repair damaged asphalt and Re-stripe the MEP roadway. See Site Plan DWGS for location.

4.8.1 The Contractor will identify all areas to be repaired by spray painting the outside corners of the work area.

All areas will be inspected by the Government prior to saw cutting for accuracy in quantities. It will be the

Contractor's responsibility to assure that all straight lines are horizontal and vertical to traffic patterns.

4.8.1.1 The Contractor will cut the area, remove any unsuitable material or debris to obtain a proper base, and ensure a depth not to exceed 12 inches. Clean ABC will then be applied to a depth of 2 inches below existing grade.

4.8.1.2 A tack coat of asphalt emulsion shall be applied to base and sides of area to be patched. Hot mix shall be used to fill, and the area shall be compacted to the level of the adjacent surfaces. The Contractor shall be responsible for the removal of all debris resulting from the patching and shall dispose the debris in sites designated by the COR or his designee.

4.8.1.3 The contractor shall excavate unsuitable subgrade material for stabilization and considered waist by the government; materials will be removed off the military property and at the contractor’s expense.

4.8.1.4 Seal all cracks ¼” or larger, mill irregular and high areas, clean, prime and slurry seal.

4.8.1.5 Before sealing, the cracks shall be cleaned of any loose or spelled pieces of asphalt concrete adjacent to the crack. Cleaning shall be accomplished by the use of a jet compressed air with air pressure not less than 90 psi.

4.8.1.6 Hot-poured sealant materials shall not be heated in excess of the safe heating temperature recommended by the manufacturer as shown on the sealant containers. Sealant that has been overheated or subjected to heating for over 3 hours or that has remained in the applicator at the end of the day's operation shall be withdrawn and wasted.

4.8.1.7 Joints shall be sealed immediately following final cleaning of the joint walls and following the placement of separating and blocking media. The walls of the joint shall be surface dry, and the atmospheric temperature and pavement temperature within the joint opening shall both be above 50 degrees F and rising at the time of application of the sealant. Open joints ready for sealing that cannot be sealed under the conditions specified or when rains interrupt sealing operations shall be blown out and allowed to dry prior to installing sealant.

4.8.1.8 The joints shall be filled from the bottom up to within 1/8-inch of the pavement surface, plus or minus

1/8-inch, using equipment approved for the type of sealant to be installed. Excess or spilled sealant shall be removed from the pavement by approved methods and shall be discarded. Traffic shall not be permitted over newly sealed pavement until authorized by the COR or his designee. In no case shall Type II sealant be installed using gravity methods and pouring pots. When a primer is supplied by the manufacturer of a sealant, it shall be applied evenly to the joint faces in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. Material used for these checks may be returned to the proper component reservoir. Joints shall be checked frequently to ensure the newly installed sealant is cured to a tack-free condition within 3 hours.

4.8.1.9 When seal has cured, re-stripe and place new bumper blocks at each parking space. All previous lane markings or parking lot striping will be replaced after the paving has been repaired. No striping will take place in less than 48 hours or more than 30 days, of optimum weather conditions to ensure that the sealant has cured.

4.8.2. Existing parking lot stripes will be overlaid with a slurry seal and no further preparation will be required.

4.8.2.1 All paint being used will be highway grade paint and applied with a mechanical applicator. Width of parking lot lines will be four inches in width and match the existing striping currently in the MEP lot. All lot lines will be white in color.
