SECTION 32 01 16.17 COLD MILLING OF BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 SCOPE: The work covered by this section includes furnishing all plant, labor, equipment, materials and transportation necessary for scarifying the surface of asphalt or port-land cement concrete pavement to improve the surface profile and cross section in preparation for resurfacing.
1.2 APPLICABLE PUBLICATIONS: The publications listed below form a part of this section to the extent referenced. Publications are referred to by basic designation only. Publications shall be assumed to be the most current edition in effect at the time a contract is awarded.
1.2.1 State of Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) Publications:
Standard Specifications for State Road and Bridge Construction.
All references to "The State" or "The Engineer" shall be considered as referring to "The Contracting Officer".
1.3 SUBMITTALS: Not Used
1.4 MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT: The quantity of pavement scarification shall be measured by the square yards of work completed and accepted. The average depth of pavement scarification shall be as indicated on the Bid Schedule. Pavement scarification shall be paid for using the measured quantities and the Unit Price provided by the Contractor on the Bid Schedule. This compensation shall include full payment for the work including disposal of debris and traffic control during accomplishment of the work.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 EQUIPMENT: Scarifying equipment shall be capable of removing the pavement surface to the necessary depth, and providing a close tolerance profile surface. Cold planning equipment shall be used for concrete surfaces and for asphaltic or bituminous surfaces. The scarifying width should be suitable for the Contractor's method of operation, and, except for very short or irregular sections, cold planning scarification equipment shall be controlled automatically by a traveling ski or a similar device. An approved rotary broom shall be used to clean the profiled surface. Water shall be used as necessary to avoid a traffic hazard and a dust nuisance.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 GENERAL: The Contractor shall perform pavement scarification as indicated on the Delivery Orders and specified herein. Debris from scarification shall be removed by the Contractor from the pavement immediately. When salvage or recycling directions are not indicated, the cold milling debris shall be picked up, transported, and stockpiled at locations designated by the Contracting Officer’s Representative within 10 miles of the project limits. When recycling of the asphalt material is not specified, all the asphalt removed shall remain the property of the Government. The scarified surface shall be swept with a rotary broom promptly and before opening to public traffic.
3.2 PREPARATION FOR RESURFACING: When resurfacing is a part of the contract work, it is intended that the entire area designated be scarified by a cold planning operation, leaving a surface with a smooth profile. For extremely irregular areas or where channeling, corner breaks, or settlements have occurred, occasional skips will be allowed, but at least 95 percent of each 100 feet of traffic lane, or equivalent, shall have a newly scarified surface. When a cross section of the scarified surface is shown on the plans, the operation shall be so controlled as to provide a surface that is true within a nominal tolerance of 1/4 inch, including joints where adjacent cuts meet. The profile may be inspected by testing for smoothness with a 10 foot surface checker placed parallel to the centerline, and variations greater than 1/4 inch shall be corrected.
3.3 TRAFFIC CONTROLS: Throughout the progress of the work, the Contractor shall observe the provisions of SECTION 01 55 26 TRAFFIC CONTROL AND SAFETY.
