About this file

This document is a summary of NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) inspection, test, and maintenance requirements for three types of fire suppression systems: Clean Agent Systems (FM-200, HFC-227), Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Systems, and Kitchen Ventilation Hoods.

For Clean Agent Systems, inspections and testing must comply with UFC 3-601-02, the system manufacturer's instructions, and NFPA 2001 (latest edition). Monthly and annual maintenance tags must be attached to each system to record inspector initials, date, and confirmation of maintenance/inspections performed. A minimum of one inspector licensed as NICET Level I and one supervisor licensed as NICET Level III with experience in clean agent systems are required; helpers do not require licensure. Five-year inspections must be conducted in the first year of contract award. Key requirements include semi-annual inspections of agent quantity and pressure, cylinder condition, inert gas pressure in cylinders, and halocarbon cylinder refilling conditions. System components require annual inspection/testing including system condition and operation, hoses, alarms, and controls. Every five years, cylinders must be retested and hoses system-tested.

For CO2 Systems, inspections and testing must follow UFC 3-601-02, manufacturer's instructions, and NFPA 12 (latest edition) with the same licensing requirements and maintenance tag protocols. Semi-annual inspections address low-pressure containers, system operational condition, and high-pressure cylinder integrity. Annual testing includes system hoses, operation, time delays, audible/visible alarms, detectors, and isolation valves. Additional requirements include verification of CO2 tank amounts, high-pressure cylinder refilling conditions, hazard size and configuration verification, warning sign placement, pressure release device operation, selector valve functionality, equipment shutdowns, and manual release operations. Every five years, system control units and battery backups require testing; every 12 years, high-pressure cylinders and hose assemblies must be hydrostatically tested and reinstalled.

For Kitchen Ventilation Hoods, inspections and testing must comply with UFC 3-601-02, manufacturer's instructions, NFPA 17 (latest edition), NFPA 17A, NFPA 72, and NFPA 96. Semi-annual inspections verify nozzle location above grease-producing equipment, manual actuator condition, tamper indicators, maintenance tags/certificates, physical damage, pressure gauges, blow-off caps, and protected equipment status. Annual testing includes gas and electric power shutoffs, water-wash hood cleaning systems operation, manual and automatic release device functionality, agent distribution piping obstruction verification, and recirculating system operations. Annual maintenance requires grease removal from exhaust systems and cleaning of electrostatic precipitators and hood plenums. Every five years, fusible element temperature sensors and heat detector calibration must be verified or replaced, and restorable-type heat detectors require condition assessment.
