Wood nailers shall comply with Section 06 10 00 ROUGH CARPENTRY.
3.3 INSTALLATION
Installation shall comply with the manufacturer's approved instructions, except as otherwise specified.
3.3.1 Flashing
Edges of membrane, projections through the roof and changes in roof planes shall be flashed.
Flashing material shall be extended and sealed a minimum of 75 mm (3 inches) on each side of the fasteners which attach the membrane to nailers. The installed flashing shall be fastened at the top of the flashing a maximum of 300 mm (12 inches) on center under metal counter-flashing or cap.
3.3.2 Expansion Joints
Expansion joints shall be covered using prefabricated covers or elastomeric flashing in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.
3.3.3 Membrane Installation
Membrane shall be applied in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and the following requirements. Layout membrane and side lap adjoining sheets in accordance with membrane manufacturer’s installation instruction. Allow for sufficient membrane to form proper membrane terminations. Remove dusting agents and dirt from membrane and substrate areas where bonding adhesive are to be applied. Apply specified adhesive evenly and continuously to substrate at rates recommended by the roof membrane manufacturer’s application instructions. Do not apply bonding adhesive to surfaces of membrane in seam or lap areas. Allow adhesive to flash off or dry to consistency prescribed by manufacturer before adhering sheets to the substrate, Roll each sheet into adhesive slowly and evenly to avoid wrinkles; broom or roll the membrane to remove air pockets and fish mouths and to ensure full, continuous bonding of sheet to substrate. Form field lap splices or seams as specified.
Allow the adhesive to dry until it is tacky but will not string or stick to a dry finger touch.
3.3.4 Lap Splices
Weathered Membranes Cleaner may be used to remove construction dirt and prepare the TPO membrane splice area prior to welding. Hot Air weld the Sure-Weld membrane using and Automatic Hot Air Welding Machine or Hot Air Hand Welder in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications. At all splice intersections, roll the seam with a silicone roller to ensure a continuous hot air welded seam. When using 60 mils thick membranes, all splice intersections shall be overlaid with Sure-Weld non-reinforced flashing.
3.3.5 Cutoffs
Cutoffs shall be installed if work day is ended or interrupted by bad weather before roof section is complete. The insulation line shall be straightened using loose-laid cut insulation and the membrane shall be sealed to the roof deck. Flutes in metal decking shall be sealed off along the cutoff edge.
Membrane shall be pulled free or cut to expose the insulation when resuming work, and cut insulation sheets used for fill-in shall be removed as necessary to maintain the staggered pattern.
3.3.6 Installation of Walkways
Install walkways at roof access points and where otherwise indicated for traffic areas and for access to mechanical equipment, in accordance with the roof membrane manufacturer’s instructions. Provide minimum 150mm (6 inch) separation between adjacent walkways to accommodate drainage.
3.4 BALLAST
When ballast is required, ballast shall be applied as the membrane is installed to prevent wind uplift, except that seams and terminations shall be left uncovered until completion and inspection. Membrane shall be protected from mechanical damage from wheeled equipment during ballast application. Minimum ballast weight shall not be less than required by required by RP-4, or indicated. Ballast shall be spread as indicated or as recommended by the manufacturer for the anticipated wind conditions. Unless otherwise specified, size 2 ballast shall be spread at the rate of 620 to 720 Pa (13 to 15 psf.) and size 4 ballast shall be applied at the rate of 480 to 575 Pa (10 to 12 psf.)
3.5 PROTECTION OF FINISHED ROOFING
The roofing membrane shall be protected from damage by other trades. After completion of work by other trades, the protection shall be removed and the roof shall be inspected. Any damage shall be repaired in accordance with the recommendations of the roofing manufacturer.
3.6 INSTRUCTIONS TO GOVERNMENT PERSONNEL
Furnish written and verbal instructions on proper maintenance procedures to designated Government personnel. Prepare and submit written instructions in accordance with Section 01 33 00 SUBMITTAL PROCEDURES. Furnish instructions by a competent representative of the roof membrane manufacturer and include a minimum of 4 hours on maintenance and emergency repair of the membrane. Include a demonstration of membrane repair, and give sources of required special tools. Furnish information on safety requirements during maintenance and emergency repair operations. Include copies of Material Safety Data Sheets for maintenance/repair materials.
3.7 INFORMATION CARD
For each roof, furnish one paper copy & one digital copy (.pdf – text searchable) of an information card for facility records and a photoengraved 1 mm (0.032) inch thick aluminum card for exterior display. Paper and aluminum copies of card must be 215 mm by 275 mm (8- 1/2 by 11 inches) minimum. Information card must identify facility name and number; location;
contract number; approximate roof area; detailed roof system description, including deck type, membrane, number of plies, method of application, manufacturer, insulation and cover board system and thickness; presence of tapered insulation for primary drainage, presenceof vapor retarder; date of completion; installing contractor identification and contact information;
