SECTION II. DESCRIPTION, DATA PLATES, AND TABULATED DATA
DESCRIPTION.
General. The pump assembly (Figure 1-1) is used to power a hydraulic system for the operation of hydraulically actuated devices. It delivers a non-pulsating flow of fluid in varying volume as required for operation of equipment in the system. Control of pump operation to meet the demands of the hydraulic system is provided by an integral, automatic pressure control. Since internal parts depend on the hydraulic fluid for lubrication, it is important that the pump housing be completely filled with hydraulic fluid before starting.
Operation. Refer to Figure 1-2.
As the drive shaft rotates, it causes the pistons to reciprocate within the cylinder block bores. The piston shoes are held against a bearing surface by compression force during the discharge stroke and by the shoe hold down plate and retainer during the intake stroke. The bearing surface is held at an angle to the drive shaft axis of rotation by the yoke.
As shown on Figure 1-3, during the intake stroke, each piston shoe follows the shoe bearing plate away from the valve plate. The piston is withdrawn from the cylinder block and fluid is drawn into the cylinder block bore. Further rotation of the drive shaft causes the piston to follow the shoe bearing plate toward the valve plate, producing the discharge stroke. Fluid is then expelled from the cylinder block bore through the outlet port of the valve plate.
As shown on Figure 1-4, piston stroke is controlled by the yoke angle, which is in turn regulated by the compensator valve.

Operation of the compensator valve is shown on Figure 1-5. With no load on the pump the yoke will be at maximum angle. As load increases, outlet pressure Ps increases. When Ps is sufficient to overcome the force of the compensator spring, the compensator valve spool moves downward, metering increasing control pressure Pc to the yoke actuating piston. This causes the yoke angle to decrease.
If the pump load is decreased, outlet pressure Ps decreases. This allows the compensator spool to be displaced upward by the spring, opening the yoke actuating piston to case pressure, thus reducing control pressure Pc. The yoke actuating spring will then cause the yoke angle to increase.

DATA PLATES.
NOTE
To indicate a salvaged or recapitalized/overhauled item, the suffix letter “D” may have been added to the Variable Displacement Axial Piston Pump Assembly part number on the item's data plate in human-readable and/or machine-readable information. Upon completion of the M&O event being accomplished IAW this document, the Variable Displacement Axial Piston Pump Assembly part number on the outgoing IUID data plate shall not include the “D” suffix in either human-readable information or machine-readable information.
Original Identification Data Plate (see Figure 1-6). The original identification data plate is located on the Variable Displacement Axial Piston
Pump Assembly. The original identification data may contain some or all of the following in Human Readable Information (HRI): the manufacturer's identity code, component name, serial number, stock number, part number and contract number. The original identification data plate does not contain 2-D Machine Readable Information (MRI).
Opportunistic Parts Marking (OPM) IUID Label(s) (see Figure 1-7). In addition to the original identification data plate, some Variable Displacement Axial Piston Pump Assemblies may have one or two OPM IUID Labels located in the vicinity of the original nameplate. One label contains an ECC 200 compliant 2-D data matrix encoded with a Unique Item Identifier (UII) that is constructed/formatted IAW DoD Guide
[Guidelines for Registering Government Serialization, Type Designation and Ownership of Major End Items, Assemblies and Subassemblies and Capital Equipment] to Uniquely Identifying Items and MIL-STD-130 [Department of Defense Standard Practice Identification Marking of U.S. Military Property]. If present, the second label contains an ECC 200 compliant 2-D data matrix encoded with the Boeing part number visible on the component at the time the OPM IUID Label was applied.
Item Unique Identification (IUID) Data Plate(s) (see Figure 1-6). The IUID data plate has two ECC 200 compliant 2-D data matrices. One 2-D data matrix is encoded with a UII that is constructed/formatted IAW DoD Guide [Guidelines for Registering Government Serialization, Type
Designation and Ownership of Major End Items, Assemblies and Subassemblies and Capital Equipment] to Uniquely Identifying Items and MIL-STD-130 [Department of Defense Standard Practice Identification Marking of U.S. Military Property]. The other 2-D data matrix is encodedPage 8 of 104; printed on: 30 May 2017 14:41:50

with the component's current Boeing part number. In addition to the 2-D data matrices, the IUID data plate contains HRI which corresponds to the MRI, as well as some or all of the HRI that was originally present on the component (see paragraph 1-6.a.)
Figure 1-6, Sheet 2 of 4, shows the possible IUID data plate(s) options for this component. Option A represents an IUID data plate format for components originally UID-marked during production. Option B and C represents an IUID data plate(s) format for components originally UID-marked post-production in the field or during a maintenance event (commonly referred to as legacy components).
Serial numbers shall not be altered/changed in any way. To accommodate any requirement to display an inspection/procedure/configuration code, a Maintenance Inspection Indicator (MII) field shall be added to the IUID data plate as depicted in Figure 1-6, Sheet 2 of 4, as applicable.
If during PSA, it is determined that the serial number of the Variable Displacement Axial Piston Pump Assembly is not appended with an inspection/procedure/configuration code, but a code is required during the M&O process, the code shall only be displayed on the IUID data plate as HRI in the MII field (e.g. MII: A). If multiple inspection/procedure/configuration codes are required, the codes shall be added to the MII field (not the serial number) as HRI, with each code separated by a dash (e.g. MII: A-XX-XX-X).
Historical records shall be updated to document the change. When using DA Form 2410 [Component Removal and Repair/Overhaul Log] electronic-system, the applicable code(s) shall be entered in the "MII" field; using the paper system the code(s) shall be entered in the "REMARKS" field (e.g., "MII: A" or "MII: A-X-XX-XX-X" for multiple codes).
The IUID data plate is fabricated of aluminum sheet that meets the physical characteristics per MIL-DTL-15024 [Detail
Specification, Plates, Tags and Bands for Identification of Equipment]. The MRI and HRI shall be marked on the IUID data plate using a Laser Etch (see Table 2-2 [Inspection and Test Equipment]), Metal Photographic Process or equivalent. Both the format of the IUID data plate and its location on the Variable Displacement Axial Piston Pump Assembly are depicted in Figure 1-6. Refer to paragraph 1-6.d for fabrication of IUID data plate.
Fabrication of IUID Data Plates (Figure 1-6).
NOTE
Prior to fabrication of the IUID data plate, the DoD IUID Registry shall be queried per paragraph 3-7 [DETERMINE EXISTENCE OF
UNIQUE ITEM IDENTIFIER (UII).].
NOTE
The UII shall be formatted/constructed IAW DoD Guide [Guidelines for Registering Government Serialization, Type Designation and
Ownership of Major End Items, Assemblies and Subassemblies and Capital Equipment] to Uniquely Identifying Items and MIL-STD-
130 [Department of Defense Standard Practice Identification Marking of U.S. Military Property]. The UII shall be registered in the DoD IUID Registry.
If the Variable Displacement Axial Piston Pump Assembly is not registered in the DoD IUID Registry as determined by paragraph
3-7 [DETERMINE EXISTENCE OF UNIQUE ITEM IDENTIFIER (UII).] (regardless of how the component is marked), and/or the UII data and component data does not match that in the DoD IUID Registry record, an IUID data plate shall be fabricated in the format of Option B, Figure 1-6, Sheet 3 of 4. OPM IUID Labels, if applicable, shall be removed from the component, however they may be kept with the component’s documentation for reference only.
A Construct 1 UII shall be encoded into an ECC 200 compliant 2-D data matrix. The CAGE and Unique Component
Number (UCN) shall be acquired from AMCOM’s The Army Maintenance Management System – Aviation (TAMMS- A/MCDS), Unique Identification (UID) database at https://tamms-a.redstone.army.mil (Appendix A, Websites: [DPAP UID:

Recorded as SET 2:
Component Boeing Part Number and Boeing CAGE Code (if present on the component in HRI).
Recorded as SET 3 (If applicable):
Component Manufacturer Part Number and Manufacturer CAGE Code (if present on the component in HRI).
If the Variable Displacement Axial Piston Pump Assembly has an original identification data plate, is registered in the DoD IUID
Registry (whether or not OPM IUID Label(s) are present), and the registry record matches data on the component (see paragraph 3-7 [DETERMINE EXISTENCE OF UNIQUE ITEM IDENTIFIER (UII).]), an IUID data plate (see paragraph 1-6.c) shall be fabricated in the format of Option B or C, Figure 1-6, Sheets 3 and 4 of 4, using the data as found in the DoD IUID Registry record. OPM IUID
Labels, if applicable, shall be removed from the component, however they may be kept with the component’s documentation for reference only.
The recorded UII (see paragraph 3-7 [DETERMINE EXISTENCE OF UNIQUE ITEM IDENTIFIER (UII).]) shall be encoded into an ECC 200 compliant 2-D data matrix. M&O of the component shall not change the UII. The component's manufacturer serial number (minus any maintenance inspection codes) as found at PSA shall reside as HRI on the
IUID data plate.
The second 2-D data matrix shall be encoded per paragraph 1-6.(b).
If the Variable Displacement Axial Piston Pump Assembly has a compliant IUID data plate, and the registry record data matches data on the component (see paragraph 3-7 [DETERMINE EXISTENCE OF UNIQUE ITEM IDENTIFIER (UII).]), but the IUID data plate must be replaced due to damage and/or change to component data (e.g., part number roll, additional inspection code required, etc.), a replacement IUID data plate (see paragraph 1-6.c) shall be fabricated in the format of Figure 1-6, Option A, B or C, whichever is applicable. The newly fabricated IUID data plate shall replicate the originally installed IUID data plate with the exception of any data that may have changed as a result of the M&O event.
The recorded UII (see paragraph 3-7 [DETERMINE EXISTENCE OF UNIQUE ITEM IDENTIFIER (UII).]) shall be encoded into an ECC 200 compliant 2-D data matrix. M&O of the component shall not change the UII. The component’s manufacturer serial number (minus any maintenance inspection codes) as found by PSA shall reside as HRI on the
IUID data plate.
The second 2-D data matrix shall be encoded per paragraph 1-6.(b).
NOTE
The verification for minimum print quality grade applies to component compliant IUID data plates that have been removed and will be reapplied. For components having an compliant IUID data plate that is installed (is not being removed during the M&O event), the IUID data plate can remain on the component provided the 2-D data matrix passes a readability check per paragraph 1-6.(5).
If the Variable Displacement Axial Piston Pump Assembly has a compliant IUID data plate, is registered in the DoD IUID Registry and the registry record matches data on the component (see paragraph 3-7 [DETERMINE EXISTENCE OF UNIQUE ITEM
IDENTIFIER (UII).]), the IUID data plate is undamaged, and no data changes are required, the IUID data plate can be reapplied to the component on which it was applied at PSA, provided the MRI meets the verification requirement for minimum print quality grade per MIL-STD-130 [Department of Defense Standard Practice Identification Marking of U.S. Military Property]. As an exception, the grading requirements for verification of laser etched black anodized aluminum plates can be per Table 1-1 [Verification
Requirements]. If the 2-D data matrices do not meet the minimum grade requirements, a replacement IUID data plate shall be fabricated 1-6.d.
After fabricating an IUID data plate, use a data matrix grader/verifier (Table 2-2 [Inspection and Test Equipment]) to verify that the 2-
D data matrices have a minimum print quality grade per MIL-STD-130 [Department of Defense Standard Practice Identification Marking of U.S. Military Property]. Validate that data encoded in the 2-D data matrix matches HRI. Repeat the applicable marking process until the minimum print quality grade has been achieved. As an exception, the grading requirements for verification of laser etched black anodized aluminum plates can be per Table 1-1 [Verification Requirements].

SECTION II. SAFETY
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.
Personnel doing overhaul shall observe all precautions for their personal safety as specified on the warning page and within the instructions contained in this DMWR.
WARNING
CAUTIONS AND WARNINGS
Observe all cautions and warnings on containers when using volatile or toxic substances. When applicable, wear necessary protective gear while handling these substances, heated or chilled parts, and when using machinery. If substance is flammable or explosive, ENSURE that it and its vapors are kept away from heat, sparks, and flame. ENSURE that firefighting equipment is readily available and in working order prior to use of such substances.
WARNING
CLEANING SOLVENT, MIL-PRF-680, TYPE II
Cleaning solvent is toxic and flammable. To minimize danger to health, use cleaning solvent in a well ventilated area, avoid excessive skin contact of solvent. Do not inhale or breathe solvent fumes. To prevent fires, keep solvent and solvent fumes away from flame and other ignition sources.
CAUTION
Do not immerse electrical parts in solvent; insulation may soak up solvent and retain it for a long time.
SECTION III. PRE-SHOP ANALYSIS
NOTE
Visually inspect each hydraulic pump for a white torque stripe applied to the head andmating surface of all screws Part Number MS16998-44.
There are 13 locations, 8 at the housing-mounting flange interface and 5 at the housing-valve plate interface. The torque stripes identify that a one-time rework procedure requiring the mandatory replacement of these screws was accomplished.
PURPOSE.
The purpose of pre-shop analysis is to determine the reason(s) the component was removed from service and returned to the depot for overhaul and to verify compliance criteria is implemented on all required forms and records for historical data.
A Component Data Form (AMSAM-MMC Form 723, 1 July 06) (Figure 3-1) will be completed for each assembly overhauled. The Component
Data Form is also available electronically on the Internet at https://tammsa.redstone.army.mil. In completing the data form, provide a qualifying statement encompassing the location and discrepancy, defect, or failure observed. Copies of the Component Data Form and DA Form 2410
