ITEM: Powdered charcoal to AA 59138 Class D 25 September 1998 (Lump Charcoal

GFM)

SCOPE: This purchase description covers the requirements for ground powered charcoal made from American hardwood lump charcoal that will be Government Furnished Material (GFM). The Charcoal should specifically have a low ash content as defined below and be free of any contamination. Only Charcoal that is GFM is to be used for the grinding feedstock. No other fillers or contamination is allowed.

SPECIFICATIONS of GFM lump charcoal, material prior to grinding:

a. This GFM charcoal is derived from 100% American hardwood.

b. The charcoal will be supplied in 20 pound bags, up to 40 bags per pallet The contractor must provide an estimate on how much GFM charcoal will be required to meet the requested end total.

c. The contractor should optimize the grinding process to obtain the best yield practicable. Contractor is responsible for disposing of any waste from their grinding process.

SPECIFICATIONS AA 59138 Class D of powder to be manufactured

This Charcoal is to be ground and screened to insure the following granulation requirements.

Charcoal sieve size Requirements % Passing 60 mesh (250 microns) 98

140 mesh (106 microns) 901

325 mesh (45 microns) Range 50 min and 80 max Chemical analysis

Ash content 5% max Moisture 5% max

1) Note, the 90% passing 140 mesh is an exception to the specifications which originally specified 80% passing 140 mesh.

The chemical properties shall be governed by that of lump charcoal feed stock used.

Grinding should not result in any significant change of purity by contamination.

INSPECTION/ACCEPTANCE: Final acceptance of charcoal will be at Pine Bluff Arsenal. The contractor will need to demonstrate the specifications can be met.
