COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION

CHARCOAL, LUMP OR BRIQUETTE, WOOD

The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description for all federal agencies.

1. SCOPE. This commercial item description (CID) covers charcoal using as a principal fuel for preparing food or for outdoor cooking.

2. CLASSIFICATION. Charcoal shall be of the following types:

Type I - Lump Type II - Briquette

3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.

3.1 General requirements. Charcoal shall consist of the product made by charring hard or soft Wood. Charcoal to be furnished shall be as specified (see 6.1) and shall conform to the physical characteristics as specified below and to the charcoal characteristics in Table 1 when tested in accordance with

ASTM D1762.

3.2 Physical characteristics.

3.2.1 Contamination. Incompletely charred wood, trash, and other material foreign to charcoal produced shall not exceed one (1) percent by weight.

3.2.2 Type I. Type I, lump form charcoal, shall be black, nonlustrous, with glossy conchoidal fracture.

3.2.2.1 Size. Lump charcoal size shall be within the following parameters: A minimum of 90 percent, by weight, shall remain on a 2-1/2 inch screen, and a maximum of two (2) percent by weight, shall pass through a 1-1/4 inch screen.

3.2.3 Type II. Type II, briquette form charcoal, shall be pulverized or granulated charcoal which is compressed and held together by binder. Unless otherwise specified, the briquette furnished shall be without filler (see 6.1).

3.2.3.1 Size. Briquette charcoal size shall be within the following parameters: A minimum of 90 percent, by weight, of these charcoal shall remain on the 1-1/4 inch screen, and a maximum of two (2) percent by weight, shall pass through a ¾ inch screen.

3. REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS. The offeror/contractor is encouraged to use recovered material to the maximum extent practicable, in accordance with paragraph 23.403 of the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR).

4. PRODUCT CONFORMANCE.

4.1 Product conformance. The products provided shall meet the salient characteristics of this commercial item description, conform to the producer’s own drawings, specifications, standards, and quality assurance practices, and be the same product offered for sale in the commercial market. The government reserves the right to require proof of such conformance.

4.2 Inspection. The charcoal shall be inspected to determine compliance with all requirements specified in this CID.

4.3 Certification. Unless otherwise specified, the manufacturer shall certify that the charcoal furnished shall meet the characteristics requirements in Table 1.

5. PACKAGING. Preservation, packing, and marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.

6. NOTES.

6.1 Part or Identification Number (PIN). The following PIN procedure is for government purposes and does not constitute a requirement for the contractor.

This example describes a part numbering system for CID A-A-59813.

Example: AA59813 –A 10 F Add “F” for with filler (Type II only); omit for without (see 3.2.3) Pounds per bag “A” for Type I; “B” for Type II Basic CID numbers

6.2 Source of documents.

6.2.2 ASTM Standard:

ASTM D1762 - Standard Test Method for Chemical Analysis of Wood Charcoal.

6.3 Ordering data. The contract or order should specify the following:

a. CID document number, revision, and CID PIN.

b. Product conformance provisions.

c. Packaging requirements.
