About this file
This is a specification section for Unit Masonry Assemblies covering the materials, standards, and execution requirements for masonry construction work.
Products and Materials Required:
The specification requires concrete masonry units (CMU) in nominal 8x8x16-inch modular sizes per ASTM C90, with lightweight units having maximum 40% total water absorption and no bottom ash aggregates permitted. Clay facing brick must comply with ASTM C216, Type FBS, Grade SW, and match existing brick on the 241st Operations Building in both color and texture. Mortar materials include Type N masonry cement per ASTM C91/C91M with colored premixed cement to match TEC Campus Buildings, Portland cement per ASTM C150/C150M Type I, and hydrated lime per ASTM C207 Type S. Reinforcement consists of mill-galvanized truss or ladder-type joint reinforcement per ASTM A1064/A1064M with 0.1483-inch rods. Flashings include pre-finished aluminum per ASTM B209 (0.032-inch thick) with modified silicone polyester coating and through-wall copper flashing (Copper Tuft by Hohmann & Barnard) with polymer coating and fiberglass scrim. Accessories include QV Quandro weeps by Hohmann & Barnard and non-acidic cleaning solutions. The specification references multiple ASTM standards and requires Buy American Act compliance certification.
Execution Requirements:
Concrete masonry units shall be laid in running bond with coursing of one unit and one mortar joint equaling 8 inches and concave mortar joints. Brick units must match existing bond and coursing. Installation requires horizontal joint reinforcement at 8 inches on center for single-wythe masonry and 16 inches on center for general and veneer applications, with reinforcement placed in first and second joints above and below openings, extending minimum 16 inches each side. Weeps must be installed at 32-inch centers horizontally above through-wall flashing and at wall bottoms. Cavity mortar control panels must be installed continuously during exterior wythe construction with airspace width no more than 3/8 inch greater than panel thickness. Masonry flashings must extend full width at water interruption points and at least 6 inches into adjacent masonry. A pre-installation meeting is required minimum one week prior to work commencement with seven days' advance notice to the Contracting Officer. Cold and hot weather requirements must comply with ACI 530/530.1/ERTA standards.
