About this file
This is a Geotechnical Data Report prepared for airfield pavement and hydrant system improvements at Pease Air National Guard facility in Newington, New Hampshire. The report, dated May 23, 2014, presents results of subsurface exploration and laboratory analysis conducted by Terracon Consultants, Inc. for Pond and Company.
The project involved advancing ten test borings (B-1 through B-10) to depths ranging from 6 to 10 feet below ground surface using 3¼-inch hollow-stem augers. Subsurface conditions consist primarily of fill materials comprising silty sand to poorly graded sand with trace to moderate gravel content, ranging from medium dense to very dense, overlaying glaciofluvial deposits of poorly-graded sand with silt (SP-SM classification). Laboratory testing included particle size analysis and water content determination on representative samples; no groundwater was observed during drilling. Five soil samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in the jet fuel range, with all results below detection limits and below New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services Soil Remediation Standards. Pavement thicknesses varied from 3.0 to 14.0 inches, with three borings encountering 12 to 14-inch Portland cement concrete pavements. The report includes detailed boring logs, grain size distribution test data, and environmental laboratory analytical results in three appendices addressing field exploration, laboratory testing, and supporting classification documentation.

GEOTECHNICAL DATA REPORT
KC-47A AIRFIELD PAVEMENTS AND HYDRANT SYSTEMS
NEWINGTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE
Terracon Project No. J1145106
INTRODUCTION 1.0
This report presents the results of our geotechnical services performed for the proposed taxiways, aprons and hydrant systems at the New Hampshire Air National Guard facility in Newington, New Hampshire. The purpose of our services is to provide geotechnical data for the design and construction of these systems and to provide limited environmental soil classification to determine potential soil management issues during construction.
Our geotechnical engineering scope of services included advancing ten test borings, designated B-1 through B-10, to depths ranging from approximately 6 to 10 feet below the existing ground surface within the areas of proposed pavement improvements and hydrant system components. A Site Location Map and a Boring Location Plan are included in Appendix A as Exhibits A-1 and A-2, respectively. Logs of the test borings are also included in Appendix A. Laboratory Data is included in Appendix B.

SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS 3.0
3.1 Typical Subsurface Profile
Based on the results of the borings, subsurface conditions can be generalized as follows:
Description Approximate Depth to Bottom of Stratum (feet) Material Encountered Consistency/
Relative Density
Fill 2.0 to >10.0 Silty Sand to Poorly Graded Sand, trace to with gravel, with silt, brown to light brown
Medium Dense to Very Dense
Glaciofluvial >6.0 Poorly-Graded Sand with silt yellowish-brown. (SP-SM) Medium Dense to
Dense
Soil samples were field screened for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with a photoionization detector (PID). None of the soil samples screened had VOC levels above detection limits.
Visual soil classifications and conditions encountered at each boring location are indicated on the individual boring logs. Stratification boundaries on the boring logs represent the approximate locations of changes in soil types; in-situ, the transition between materials may be gradual. Details of each boring can be found on the boring logs in Appendix A. A discussion of field sampling procedures is included in Appendix A.
3.2 Groundwater
The boreholes were observed during drilling for the presence and level of groundwater.
Groundwater was not observed in the borings within the depths of drilling. Groundwater level fluctuations occur because of seasonal variations in the amount of rainfall, runoff, and other factors not evident at the time the borings were performed. Therefore, groundwater levels during construction or at other times in the life of the structure may be higher or lower than the levels indicated on the boring logs. The possibility of groundwater level fluctuations should be considered when developing the design and construction plans for the project.
3.3 Soils Laboratory Data
Soil samples were obtained from the boring locations and returned to our Manchester, New Hampshire office for further laboratory testing. A summary of subbase laboratory results and measured pavement thicknesses is provided in the following table.

Complete laboratory test results can be found in Appendix B. A discussion of laboratory testing procedures is included in Appendix B.
3.4 Environmental Laboratory Data
Five soil samples were submitted for analysis to Chemserve, Inc. of Milford, New Hampshire.
The soil samples were submitted for laboratory analysis of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) within the jet fuel range. TPH results for all submitted samples were found to be below the detection limits of the method and therefore would be below New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) Soil Remediation Standards (SRS). A copy of the laboratory analytical report is included in Appendix B.
GENERAL COMMENTS 4.0
This report does not reflect variations that may occur between explorations, across the site, or because of the modifying effects of weather. The nature and extent of such variations may not become evident until during or after construction. The scope of services for this project does not include either specifically or by implication any environmental or biological (e.g., mold, fungi, bacteria) assessment of the site or identification or prevention of pollutants, hazardous materials or conditions except for the collection of soil samples for TPH analysis. If the owner is concerned about the potential for contamination or pollution, other studies should be undertaken.
Responsive Resourceful Reliable 4
This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of our client for specific application to the project discussed and prepared in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering practices. No warranties, either express or implied, are intended or made. Site safety, excavation support, and dewatering requirements are the responsibility of others.

Field Exploration Description
Ten borings (B-1 through B-10) were drilled to depths ranging from approximately 6.0 to 10.0 feet below the ground surface at the site on March 17 and 18, 2014. Explorations were advanced at the approximate locations shown on the attached Boring Location Plan (Exhibit A- 2). Northern Test Boring of Gorham, Maine advanced the test borings using an all-terrain-vehicle-mounted drill rig utilizing 3¼-inch-inside-diameter hollow-stem augers. Borings were located in the field by line-of-sight referencing existing site features. The accuracy of boring locations should only be assumed to the level implied by the method used to define them.
Generally, samples were obtained nearly continuously using a standard 2-inch-outside-diameter split-barrel sampler. Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs) were performed in general accordance with industry standards. Density of soil samples are based on N-values, which is determined by the number of hammer blows required to drive the sampler from 6 to 18 inches.
An automatic SPT hammer was used to advance the split-barrel sampler in the borings performed on this site. A greater efficiency is typically achieved with the automatic hammer compared to the conventional safety hammer operated with a cathead and rope. Published correlations between the SPT values and soil properties are based on the lower efficiency cathead and rope method. This higher efficiency affects the standard penetration resistance blow count (N) value by increasing the penetration per hammer blow over what would obtained using the cathead and rope method. The effect of the automatic hammer's efficiency has been considered in the interpretation and analysis of the subsurface information for this report.
Soil samples were checked utilizing headspace screening with a photo ionization detector (PID) to assess potential soil management issues during construction.
Groundwater conditions were measured in each boring at the time of drilling. Visual classification of soils and observed groundwater (if applicable) levels are shown on test boring logs included in Appendix A.

Appendix B Laboratory Testing
Responsive Resourceful Reliable Exhibit B-1
Laboratory Testing Description
Particle size analysis (ASTM D422) and water content (ASTM D4959) tests were performed on representative samples of subgrade soils recovered from test boring cuttings, where possible.
Atterberg Limits tests (ASTM D4318) were not performed on retrieved soil samples because of the non-plastic character of the underlying soils. Test results are included in this Appendix.
As part of the testing program, samples were examined in our laboratory and classified in accordance with the General Notes and the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) based on the material's texture and plasticity. The USCS group symbol is shown on the boring logs, and a brief description of the USCS is included with this report in Appendix C.
Five soil samples were submitted for analysis to Chemserve, Inc. of Milford, New Hampshire.
The soil samples were submitted under proper chain-of-custody for laboratory analysis of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) within the jet fuel range.

Dear Wally Shedd
Enclosed please find the laboratory results for the above referenced samples that were received by the ChemServe sample custodian on the above referenced date. Any abnormalities to the samples upon receipt would be noted on the enclosed chain of custody document. This report is not valid without a completed chain of custody with the corresponding control number, attached.
All samples analyzed by ChemServe are subject to quality standards. These standards are as stringent or more stringent than those established under NELAC, 40 CFR Part 136, state certification programs, and corresponding methodologies. ChemServe has a written QA/QC Procedures Manual that outlines these standards, and is available for your reference, upon request. Unless otherwise stated on the Chain of Custody or within the report, all holding times, preservation techniques, container types, and analytical methods are analogous with those outl ined by NELAC. All units are based on “as received” weight unless denoted “dry”.
I certify that I have reviewed the above referenced analytical data and state forms, and I have found this report within compliance with the procedures outlined within NELAC. ChemServe’s certified parameter list can be found at http://www.chemservelab.com/Laboratory-Information-and-Documentation.aspx

Water levels indicated on the soil boring logs are the levels measured in the borehole at the times indicated.
Groundwater level variations will occur over time. In low permeability soils, accurate determination of groundwater levels is not possible with short term water level observations.
CONSISTENCY OF FINE-GRAINED SOILS
(50% or more passing the No. 200 sieve.)
Consistency determined by laboratory shear strength testing, field visual-manual procedures or standard penetration resistance
DESCRIPTIVE SOIL CLASSIFICATION
> 8,000
Unless otherwise noted, Latitude and Longitude are approximately determined using a hand-held GPS device. The accuracy of such devices is variable. Surface elevation data annotated with +/- indicates that no actual topographical survey was conducted to confirm the surface elevation. Instead, the surface elevation was approximately determined from topographic maps of the area.
Soil classification is based on the Unified Soil Classification System. Coarse Grained Soils have more than 50% of their dry weight retained on a #200 sieve; their principal descriptors are: boulders, cobbles, gravel or sand. Fine Grained Soils have less than 50% of their dry weight retained on a #200 sieve; they are principally described as clays if they are plastic, and silts if they are slightly plastic or non-plastic. Major constituents may be added as modifiers and minor constituents may be added according to the relative proportions based on grain size. In addition to gradation, coarse-grained soils are defined on the basis of their in-place relative density and fine-grained soils on the basis of their consistency.
