RE: Report on Geotechnical Investigation Main Base Entrance Upgrade 110th ATKW, Battle Creek Air National Guard Base Battle Creek, Michigan
Dear Mr. Bluhm:
We have completed the geotechnical investigation for the proposed Main Base Entrance Upgrade Project at the Battle Creek Air National Guard Base located in Battle Creek, Michigan. This report presents the results of our observations, geotechnical recommendations, and construction considerations.
The soil samples collected during our field investigation will be retained in our laboratory for 90 days from the date of this report, at which time these samples will be discarded unless otherwise directed by you.
It was a pleasure working with you on this project. If you have any questions regarding this report, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely, Somat Engineering, Inc.
Jennifer S. Schmitzer Geotechnical Project Manager
REPORT SUMMARY
A general summary of the report conclusions and recommendations is provided below:
1. This project consists of the design and construction of a main entrance gate to the Battle
Creek ANGB, including new guardhouse building and a new vehicle inspection/gatehouse building, as well as new pavement for the driveway and entrance to the base. Six (6) soil borings were requested for this project, with five drilled in proposed pavement areas (each extending to 10 feet) and one in the proposed vehicle inspection/gatehouse and guard house are (extending to 40 feet deep).
2. We understand shallow foundation systems are anticipated for these new buildings. As such, we expect shallow spread or continuous foundations to bear at standard frost depth (42 inches below final site grade). We do not anticipate any significant grade changes in this area (limited to within 1 foot±). Soil boring B-04 was drilled in the area of the vehicle inspection building/gate house, though should be applicable to the nearby guardhouse as well. At a depth of 42 inches below existing grade, we anticipate the bearing soils will consist of loose fine sand, or possibly the existing granular fill soils
3. Based on all of the borings, at the estimated subgrade level for both the building slabs-on-grade and pavement, we expect the subgrade soils for the new pavement to consist of the existing silty sand and sand with silt fill soils. These soils were found to be in a loose to medium dense condition. These soils are considered to be suitable for support of new slabs and pavement sections, provided they are properly prepared (densified where they are loose).
However, these soils contain a significant amount of fines to where they are not considered free draining and could be susceptible to frost action. This should be considered in the design and is discussed further in the report.
The summary presented above is general in nature and should not be considered apart from the entire text of the report with all the qualifications and considerations mentioned therein. Details of our findings and recommendations are discussed in the following sections and in the appendices of this report.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 GENERAL
Upon authorization from Mead & Hunt of Middleton, Wisconsin, Somat Engineering, Inc. (Somat) has conducted a geotechnical investigation for a proposed new Main Base Entrance at the Battle
Creek Air National Guard Base in Battle Creek, Michigan. This study was performed in accordance with Somat Proposal No. P180297R, dated February 13, 2019.
The following sections of this report will provide our understanding of the project, a description of our field investigation, the results of the field and laboratory tests, the logs of test borings, our interpretation of subsoil and groundwater conditions, recommendations related to the geotechnical aspects for design of new foundations, pavement, and construction considerations based on the soil and groundwater conditions disclosed by our field investigation.
1.2 PROJECT AND SITE INFORMATION
This project consists of the design and construction of a main entrance gate to the Battle Creek
ANGB, including new guardhouse building and a new vehicle inspection/gatehouse building, as well as new pavement for the driveway and entrance to the base.
The Battle Creek ANGB is located at 3367 West Dickman Road in Battle Creek, Michigan. The new entrance is proposed to be located near the southwest side of the base property, just north of the intersection of old Skyline Drive and Hill Brady Drive/Logistics Drive. This intersection has recently been reconfigured and reconstructed to where Skyline Drive no longer continues north through this intersection. Old Skyline Drive now terminates at a dead end north of Hill Brady

Drive/Logistics Drive and no longer services civilian traffic. The proposed guardhouse and vehicle inspection buildings are to be located north of Hill Brady Drive/Logistics Drive.
We understand the new guardhouse building will be single-story, slab-on-grade structures and the foundations are anticipated to be shallow continuous strip foundations. Preliminary loading is estimated at 2 to 3 kips/ft along strip footings anticipated for the guardhouse, and column loads of about 30 kips are anticipated for the vehicle inspection building/gatehouse. The vehicle inspection buildings/gatehouse may be supported on shallow spread footing foundations, unless the soil conditions dictate that an intermediate foundation system be necessary.
2.0 SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATION
2.1 FIELD EXPLORATION
The field exploration program consisted of performing a total of six (6) soil borings, with five drilled to assist with the design of new pavement (B-01, B-02, B-03, B-05, and B-06), and one drilled within the footprint of the proposed inspection building/gatehouse (B-04) and near the adjacent guardhouse. The pavement borings were extended to depths of about 10 feet below existing grade, and the building boring was extended to about 40 feet below existing grade.
The number and location of borings were selected by M&H and staked in the field by Somat personnel, based on the offset locations provided by M&H. The soil boring locations were not surveyed and the provided coordinates are based on measured offsets in the field. Ground surface elevations were estimated from Google Earth for information, but were not surveyed with accuracy. A soil boring location diagram is presented in Appendix A for reference.
2.1.1 Drilling Operations
The drilling operations were performed on April 3, 2019. A truck mounted drill rig was used to advance 4¼ inch (outside diameter) solid stem augers to the termination depth of the pavement soil borings. At the building boring location, 2¼ inch (inside diameter) hollow stem augers were
BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN PAGE 3
used. Upon completion, all boreholes were backfilled with auger cuttings to the surface. Where boring extended through existing pavement, the surface was patched using asphalt cold patch.
2.1.2 Sampling
Soil samples were recovered from the soil borings using split-spoon sampling procedures in accordance with ASTM Standard D1586 (“Standard Method for Penetration Tests and Split
Barrel Sampling of Soils”). Sampling was performed in the soil borings using 18 inch long split-spoon samplers at a 2.5 foot interval in the top 10 feet and every 5 feet thereafter. In addition, bulk samples of the soil at the proposed subgrade depth were collected during the drilling operation in sufficient quantities to perform the required laboratory testing.
The samples obtained during drilling were sealed in glass jars in the field to protect the soil and maintain the soil’s natural moisture content. Bulk samples were collected in large plastic buckets with lids. All soil samples for the geotechnical investigation were transported to Somat’s laboratory for further analysis and testing and will be retained in our laboratory for a period of 1 year from the date of the final report, after which they will be discarded, unless we are notified otherwise.
2.1.3 Standard Penetration Test (SPT)
Soil samples collected during the drilling portion of the subsoil exploration were labeled with the soil boring designation and a unique sample number. Soil boring samples were obtained by
Standard Penetration Tests in general accordance with ASTM D-1586 procedures, whereby a conventional 2-inch O.D. split-spoon sampler is driven into the soil with a 140 pound hammer repeatedly dropped through a free-fall distance of 30 inches. The sampler is generally driven three successive 6-inch increments, with the blows for each 6-inch increment being recorded.
The number of blows required to advance the sampler through 12 inches after an initial penetration of 6 inches, is termed the Standard Penetration Test resistance (N-value) and is presented graphically on the individual Logs of Test Borings. As added information, the number of blows for each 6-inch increment is also presented on the boring logs.
BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN PAGE 4
2.1.4 Groundwater Level Observation Procedures
Whenever possible, groundwater level observations were made during the drilling operations and immediately after completion of drilling, and are shown on the individual Logs of Test Borings.
During drilling, the depth at which free water was observed, where drill cuttings became saturated or where saturated samples were collected, was indicated as the groundwater level during drilling. In granular, pervious soils, the indicated water levels are considered relatively reliable when solid or hollow-stem augers are used for drilling. However, in cohesive soils, groundwater observations are not necessarily indicative of the static water table due to the low permeability rates of the soils, and due to the sealing off of natural paths of groundwater flow during drilling operations.
It should be noted that seasonal variations and recent precipitation conditions may influence the level of the groundwater table significantly. Groundwater observation wells are generally used if precise groundwater table information is needed, however the installation of groundwater monitoring wells was not included in the scope of the investigation. Therefore, the discussion and recommendations provided within the report are based on our knowledge of the soil and groundwater conditions in this area, which should provide for a reasonable approximation of the groundwater level.
2.2 LABORATORY TESTING
All samples recovered from the borings were classified in accordance with the Unified Soil
Classification System.
To aid in classification, grain size analyses (sieve and wash loss) were performed on five granular samples, with one selected from each pavement soil boring.
A Loss-on-Ignition test was also performed on samples suspected to contain excessive organic material. In the Loss-on-Ignition test, a sample is superheated as a means to burn off all of the
BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN PAGE 5
organic matter. The organic content is then calculated as a ratio of the weight of organic material to the weight of the overall sample.
A moisture-density relationship test and laboratory California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test (ASTM
D1883) were performed on the composited bulk subgrade sample obtained. A Modified Proctor test (ASTM D1557) was performed, in preparation for performing the CBR test. The laboratory
CBR test was performed in a soaked subgrade condition.
The results of the laboratory classification and testing are included in Appendix B on the respective logs of test borings. Grain size distribution graphs and CBR test results are presented in Appendix
C. All laboratory tests were performed in accordance with their applicable ASTM…
