4. Will the sitework/underground contractor be required to be a Birmingham city waterworks approved/certified vendor?

a. Answer: Yes. A Birmingham Water Works permit will be required and the utility contractor shall be approved/certified by the Birmingham Water Works. All cost for review, approval, and permitting of the proposed water utility work shall be the responsibility of the Contractor.

5. Drawing FP101 – The scope of work includes removal of the existing AFFF fire suppression system. Does the scope of work include removing and disposing of the foam concentrate in the existing AFF fire suppression system or will the Owner remove and dispose of the foam concentrate? Please state the type foam concentrate in the existing system if the Contractor is responsible for removing and properly disposing of the foam concentrate.

a. Answer: Yes. The Contractor shall remove and dispose of the existing foam concentrate. See attached SDS sheet for existing foam concentrate required to be removed.

The following items only pertain to Project BRKR162322:

6. Drawing S0.1 – Cold-Formed Steel Trusses Item 2 indicates the design loads for the pre-engineered steel trusses; however, the listed design loads do not consider the load imposed by the new wet pipe fire suppression system being installed in the Pump House. Please provide the design loads for the pre-engineered steel trusses associated the new wet pipe fire suppression system.

a. Answer: Small diameter piping needed to service fire protection systems for Building 137 shall be overhead supported. Ceiling load information listed on sheet S0.1 is sufficient to accommodate overhead supported fire protection systems in building 137. See also response to question 8 below.

7. Drawing FP111 – The General Notes indicate that a new wet pipe fire suppression system shall be provided in the new Pump House and the supply for this new fire suppression system shall be provided from the Base water distribution system;

however, the civil drawings do not indicate the new supply piping for this new fire suppression system. Please amend the civil drawings to indicate the new water service work for the new wet pipe fire suppression system in the new Pump House.

a. Answer: Separate water supply line is not required. Contractor shall tie into fire water in Building 137 ahead of the new backflow preventer in the pumphouse and provide a new backflow preventer for the required fire suppression systems in the pumphouse.

8. Drawing FP111 – Fire Protection Note 20 indicates certain large diameter piping shall be a minimum of 7’-0” above finish floor in Pump House. The Pump House roof structure will be constructed of pre-engineered cold-formed metal trusses; however, the design criteria for the pre-engineered cold-formed metal trusses indicated on Drawing S0.1 does not account for loads from the large diameter piping. Please confirm the intent is to support all large diameter from the concrete floor slab;

otherwise, please amend the design criteria for the pre-engineered cold-formed metal trusses.

a. Answer: Intent is to floor support large diameter piping that serves buildings 135/138. Small diameter piping needed to service fire protection of Building 137 shall be overhead supported. Refer also to question 6 above. Listed ceiling load on sheet S0.1 is sufficient to accommodate overhead supported fire protection piping for Building 137 fire protection requirements.

9. Drawing FP501 – The Floor Pipe Support Detail includes a table which provides components sizes to support piping up to 10” in diameter; however, Drawing FP401 indicates floor mounted 12” diameter piping. Please provide the components sizes for the floor pipe supports for 12” diameter piping.

a. Answer: Provide pipe stands in accordance with NFPA 13 Chapter 9.

10. RSFACU and RFRP – Drawing FP110 indicates the Releasing Service Fire Alarm Control Unit will be located in Ready Room M118 and Drawing E-101 indicates the Remote Foam Releasing Panel will also be located in Ready Room M118.

Specification Section 01 1000 – Summary seems to imply all work outside the hangar bay will be completed during Stage 2; however, the RSFACU and RFRP will need to be installed during the Stage 3 work. We trust that Ready Room M118 will need to be continuously occupied by the Owner; therefore, will it be acceptable to construct a temporary dust partition and subdivide Ready Room M118 to allow installation of the RSFACU and RFRP while the Owner continues to occupy the remainder of this room?

a. Answer: Installation of required panel box, conduits, and other infrastructure for the RSFACU and RFRP shall be installed in Stage 2 to limit disruption to the Government’s ongoing occupancy of the facility. It is understood that final wiring installation, termination, programming, and testing of the RSFACU and RFRP will be required to be installed during Stage 3 of the project. Temporary dust partition/sub-division of Ready Room M118 will not be required during Stage 3 since major construction work will have been completed in Stage 2.
