GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Machine gun components and basic issue items received as GFE, packaged as specified herein, shall not be repackaged. GFE components and basic issue received otherwise shall be repackaged.
2. Disassembly Instructions: The following components shall be removed from the machine gun to facilitate packaging and cube reduction:

DETAILED PRESERVATION, PACKAGING AND PACKING REQUIREMENTS
Materials, method, processes and procedures specified herein shall conform to the requirements of MIl-STD-2073- 1.
OPTION ONE (Polyethylene Die-Cut Foam)
1. CLEANING: The machine gun shall be disassembled as necessary to accomplish the required cleaning specified herein. All metallic surfaces shall be cleaned by any applicable process that will not damage the item.
SPECIAL CLEANING (BURNED POWDER RESIDUE) Surfaces of components subjected to burned powder residues shall be scrubbed clean with bristle brushes and/or swabs saturated with rifle bore cleaner conforming to MIL- PRF-372. Flush the scrubbed surfaces with MIL-PRF-680 solvent.
SPECIAL CLEANING OF GAGE AND EXTRACTOR: Each item shall be cleaned with MIL-PRF-680 solvent followed by a rinse in a clean solvent prior to packaging.
DRYING: All cleaned surfaces shall be thoroughly dried prior to preservative application. Drying of barrel bore and chamber shall be dried using clean, dry, lint-free swabs.
2. APPLICATION OF PRESERVATIVE: All metallic surfaces of the machine gun shall be coated with either MIL- PRF-3150 or MIL-PRF-16173, Grade 3, preservative, applied by any applicable procedure. Excess oil shall be thoroughly drained from coated surfaces. Preserved machine gun shall be allowed to dry for a minimum of one (1) hour prior to unit pack. Lubricants contaminated or removed during the cleaning process shall be reapplied in accordance with the applicable drawing requirements.
3. UNIT PACKAGING:
(a) Disassembled components shall be packaged as specified.
(b) Place support blocks (Parts1 and 2) into unit container (Part 3) as shown on sheet 11.
(c) Heat seal barrels in separate barrier bags (Part 5), insert into tube (Part 16) and position as shown in sheet
11. If only one barrel is shipped with the weapon, place two barrel keys (Part 4) as shown. Barrel keys are to be discarded when two barrels are shipped with the weapon.
(d) Heat seal Receiver Assy in barrier bag (Part 5) and position in cavities in support blocks.
(e) Heat seal Carrier Assembly in barrier bag (Part 5) and position between end supports on top of weapon and secure to bagged weapon with tape (Part 6)
(f) Place support blocks (Parts 7 and 8) into position as shown on sheet 11.

g. Individually bag (part 5) and heat seal the following parts: Extractor (P/N 7160041);
and Gage **(P/N 5351217). Position in box (Part 9). Use wadding (Part 10) as necessary to fill voids and prevent movement in box. Seal with two pieces of tape (Part 6). Place box into cavity of butt end support (Part 7) with labeled end up.
**A completed Gage Record Card, DA Form 3023, shall be included with the packaged gage.
h. Place Mitten, Heat Protective (P/N MIL-M-11199) and Operator’s Manual, TM 9-1005-213-10 each into individual barrier bags (Part 11) and heat seal. Place bagged items into voids between supports.
i. Place butt hold-down key (Part 12) into position as shown in sheet 11.
j. Close fiberboard box and seal in accordance with Sealing Method B of ASTM D1974.
k. Encapsulate container in pouch (Part 13). Manually exhaust air and heat seal.
l. Line all inner sides of outer container (Part 15) with solid fiberboard pads (part 14) to prevent abrasion or rupture of barrier bag. Insert bagged inner container and seal outer container Method B, ASTM D1974.
m. Mark unit pack is the shipping container.
4. SPECIAL MARKING:
a. SERIAL NUMBER: Serial number marking is required and shall be listed on the bar code labels.
b. BAR CODE LABELS: One (1) additional bar code label will be located on the outboard side of each shipping container after containers are palletized, allowing the national stock number and gun serial number to be read without having to unload containers from the palletized load.
OPTION TWO (FORMED FIBER DESIGN)
2. CLEANING: The machine gun shall be disassembled as necessary to accomplish the required cleaning specified herein. All metallic surfaces shall be cleaned by any applicable process that will not damage the item.

3. UNIT PACKAGING: A set of molded inserts shall be designed at the packaging facilities discretion. The guidelines for design are that weight and cube be minimized; voids are designed to accommodate the individual packages as follows; overall design be a two-piece construction in which the gun protrudes from the bottom piece for ease of removal; and the material constitutions be manufactured from recycled heavy brown sulfate pulp paper, biodegradable and recyclable, moisture content of 5% to 7% at time of manufacture, density 10lbs to 12 lbs per cubic foot, Suggested Source of Supply: FIBERCEL CORP, PORTVILLE, NY.
(a) Disassembled components shall be packaged as specified.
(b) Heat seal barrels in separate barrier bags (Part 5) and position in specific molded sections of the insert. If only one spare barrel is included, utilize an adequate filler to reduce that void.
(c) Heat seal Receiver Assy in barrier bag (Part 5) and position in designated cavity of formed insert.
(d) Heat seal Carrier Assembly in barrier bag (Part 5) and position in designated cavity of formed insert.

3. UNIT PACKAGING:
A foam-in-place packaging design may be developed at the packaging facilities discretion providing that all items are effectively immobilized, the individual packaging procedures delineated as follows are provided for, and the additional criteria stated here is adhered to. MIL-HDBK-775, Technique 1, Split-Pack Polyurethane Foam for this process shall be in accordance with MIL-PRF-83671, Class 1, Category 2, Density 2.0 Lbs. /cubic foot (Tensile strength and oil resistance requirements shall apply.). Inspection of the foam-in-place packaging shall be as specified in MIL-HDBK-775, Group “C”.
The inspection level shall be S-1 with an AQL of 4%.
