BACKGROUND
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Office of Information & Technology (OIT), strives to provide high quality, effective, and efficient Information Technology (IT) services to those responsible for providing care to the Veterans at the point-of-care as well as throughout all the points of the Veterans’ health care in an effective, timely and compassionate manner. VA depends on Information Management/Information Technology (IM/IT) systems to meet mission goals.
During the 2019 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tech Sprint, the National Artificial Intelligence Institute recognized that care plan management, hospital readmissions, and the outpatient management of complex health conditions was something that could be better managed with the assistance of Artificial Intelligence. Further, the use of AI in case management poses unique opportunities to advance research into the use of AI to train models relevant to case management and complex care conditions.
With the arrival of COVID-19 as a public health emergency, the same principles of case management with additional complications of social distancing, tracking large panels of potentially at-risk patients, and monitoring a condition that can rapidly accelerate towards hospitalization or death, the need for artificially intelligence cast management solutions became even more evident and the proposed scope of the project shifted to focus on AI driven solutions for COVID case management at home.
